A cultural audit is a method of gaining a deeper understanding of priority audiences by understanding the pop culture narratives they consume. The project has two overarching goals. The first is to provide evidence-based insights to the foundation’s Voices for Economic Opportunity grantee cohort, a group of organizations who are designing new narratives of poverty to correct misconceptions and address systemic barriers to mobility. The second is to establish a baseline of existing narratives for longitudinal tracking by Harmony Labs, another foundation grantee. The formative research summarized in this report examines how poverty and wealth are constructed in the pop culture narratives in which media consumers are immersed — specifically scripted TV and film, popular music, and top-selling video games.1 In later stages, the Lear Center will expand this analysis to TV news and unscripted content. -
2020 Latin American and Latinx Studies Symposium Panels Panel
° A Threat to Brazilian Biodiversity and Climate Change: The Soy Industry, Beatriz Olivieri, Rollins College My presentation discusses the current environmental dilemma Brazil is facing. The desire to pursue significant economic development leads the Brazilian government to make poor decisions regarding the environment. The ongoing deforestation in Brazil related to the growth of soybeans is responsible for affecting important and unique native biomes along with causing the displacement of indigenous people -who are important actors in the protection of the environment-. In the last two decades, the soy expansion in Brazil was equivalent to an area five times the size of Switzerland. With the ArcGIS mapping tool, I was able to show the conflict between land being used for soy production that initially belonged to indigenous groups. -

Strategies in an Arts Program for Adults with Atypical Communication
STRATEGIES IN AN ARTS PROGRAM FOR ADULTS WITH ATYPICAL COMMUNICATION STRATEGIES AND ADAPTATIONS IN AN ARTS PROGRAM FOR ADULTS WITH ATYPICAL COMMUNICATION A Master’s Degree Thesis by Christina Lukac to Moore College of Art & Design In partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of MA in Art Education with an Emphasis in Special Populations Philadelphia, PA August 2017 Accepted: ________________________________ Lauren Stichter | Graduate Program Director Masters in Art Education with an Emphasis in Special Populations STRATEGIES IN AN ARTS PROGRAM FOR ADULTS WITH ATYPICAL ii COMMUNICATION Abstract The purpose of this study was to observe and implement strategies and adaptations in an arts program for adults with atypical communication due to developmental and intellectual disabilities. This study was conducted in the field using an action research approach with triangulated methods of data collection including semi- structured interviews, participant observations, and artwork analysis. While research was conducted in two different art programs with similar populations, the main site of study was at SpArc Service’s Cultural Arts Center located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The secondary site was at Center for Creative Works located in Wynnewood, Pennsylvania. The data collected between these sites produced common trends in strategies and adaptations that are used in the art room. Individual case studies conducted at SpArc Services allowed strategies to be implemented and documented in the art room. When implementing these findings, I saw how these strategies supported the participant’s goals as outlined in their Individual Outcome Summary. While working with the individual participants, areas of art making included textiles, mixed-media materials, and pop culture references. -
Volume 6, Number 1
The Road Not Taken: a Journal of Formal Poetry Winter 2012 • Winter Issue TO OUR READERS: as I'm sure you're all aware, it's about time for the spring issue. However, due to technical issues with this website, we're are going to have to rebuild entirely from the ground up. This will happen in May. With the new website will come the Spring issue. And it will happen at this URL, so please be patient with us. Welcome to our Winter 2012 Issue. This is my first issue in the wake of the passing of Lee, but I will honor his tradition and begin with a tribute to a formal poet from the past of surpassing virtue. I would like to introduce our readers to a little-known Welsh poet, Huw Menai. "Huw", for those of you who are not Welsh speakers, is pronounced like the English "Hugh". "Menai" was his pen name. His real name was Huw Menai Williams. He was a Welsh miner through the early Twentieth Century. Despite this life lived underground, he produced a large volume of poetry, much of it on spare bits of mining company paper. At the rate he was producing, of course it wasn't all going to be stellar. But he did produce some real gems. His four volumes of poetry sold modestly through the mid fifties into the early sixties and then went out of print. I think my collection of his work is perhaps the only complete one in the United States. I will give you my favorite below. -

Old wounds and rumours of the past resurface and haunt him as he tries to find out who really killed her. The film isn’t your typical revenge film. Looks are deceiving. In fact, it isn’t a revenge film at all. It’s a Greek tragedy that explores the central character’s guilt through Dante’s Inferno. Beyond, the murder and the treachery, the film is an emotional journey about a father and a daughter. This is the heart of the project. Without touching on a father’s love, the film fails. In fact, everything happens because of a father’s love for his daughter. He acts out of love. -

Who knows how to use it.” (“Lessons” 7.1) “I would suggest, then, that the monsters are not an inexplicable blunder of taste; they are essential, fundamentally allied to the underlying ideas of the poem …” (J.R.R. Tolkien, “Beowulf: The Monsters and the Critics”) Introduction: Names and Blood in the Buffyverse [1] In Joss Whedon’s Buffy the Vampire Slayer (1997-2003) and Angel (1999- 2004), words are not something to be taken lightly. A word read out of place can set a book on fire (“Superstar” 4.17) or send a person to a hell dimension (“Belonging” A2.19); a poorly performed spell can turn mortal enemies into soppy lovebirds (“Something Blue” 4.9); a word in a prophecy might mean “to live” or “to die” or both (“To Shanshu in L.A.” A1.22). -

NOTES AND ABSTRACTS ANTHROPOLOGY-PSYCHOLOGY-LEGAL MEDICINE The Physical Examination of Prisoners on Admission to Prison.- At this time, when prison problems are much in the public mind, and are being discussed in terms of mental efficiency or feeble mindedness; when Binet- Simon tests, point scale examinations, and intelligence quotients seem to be signs of modern prison progress, and the sine qua non of juvenile delinquent reformation, a consideration of the physical fitness of the adult delinquent may seem like a reversion to the archaic. But a normal mind requires a healthy body to attain its highest efficiency. How necessary, then, in studying the individual delinquent, that we should endeavor to obtain .the physical health survey as well as the intelligence quotient. While many investigators of prison problems have been dazzled by the 3pening up of a bright vista, in our recently acquired knowledge of methods for sorting out the feeble-minded, the prison physician cannot lose sight of the other, the physical side of the problem, which offers considerable incentive -rom the fact that, while feeble-mindedness cannot be cured, physical health may be restored.
