For three weeks, from April 7 through May 1, 2011, audiences will revel in an array of one- time, only-in-Philadelphia productions by many of the region’s top talents. PIFA will feature music, dance, fashion, fine arts, poetry, cuisine, and more—all generously flavored with the essence of Paris, circa 1910-20. The Orchestra, under the baton of Associate Conductor Rossen Milanov, opens the Festival with a special collaborative performance of StravinskyStravinsky’’’’ss Pulcinella with Pennsylvania Ballet (April 7, 8, 9, and 10). Dancers from the Ballet join the Orchestra on the stage of Verizon Hall to perform the work, which features new choreography by Jorma EloElo, resident choreographer of the Boston Ballet and an established star in the dance world. Manuel de Falla’s The Three-Cornered Hat is performed in its entirety by the Orchestra in the first half of this program. Mezzo-soprano Isabel LeonardLeonard,Leonard tenor Nicholas PhanPhan, and bass-baritone ShengShengyangyang join the Orchestra as soloists. Written for and premiered in 1919-20 by Sergei Diaghilev’s Ballets Russes, The Three-Cornered Hat and Pulcinella both originally featured choreography by Léonide Massine and sets and costumes by Pablo Picasso. Also during the Festival, renowned conductor David Zinman leads the Orchestra in a program that juxtaposes the salacious with the sacred (April 14-16). The program opens with a five-movement suite drawn from Berg’s unfinished opera Lulu, a sort of “preview of coming attractions” that the composer hoped would generate interest in the opera at a time when the Nazi regime was curtailing performances of his music. - more - The Philadelphia Orchestra joins the Philadelphia International Festival of the Arts Page 2 Mahler’s Fourth Symphony provides quite a contrast to the disturbing story of Lulu. It is modest, intimate, and classical in form, ending with a final movement that presents an ethereal setting of the folk poem “The Heavenly Life” for soprano and orchestra. Soprano JenniferJennifer WelchWelch----BabidgeBabidgeBabidge, who is making her Philadelphia Orchestra debut, is soloist in both works. In the Orchestra’s final performances as part of PIFA, Mr. Dutoit leads performances of two rarely-heard masterworks by Stravinsky, Apollon musagète and Oedipus Rex (April 28-30 in Verizon Hall; May 3 at New York’s Carnegie Hall) . Both works, which are based on Greek mythology, were most recently performed by the Orchestra in 1992 under the baton of Mr. Dutoit. The company was established in 1963 by Barbara Weisberger, a protégée of George Balanchine. A leader in the regional ballet movement of the 1960s, the company performed at City Center in New York in 1968, which led to a decade of national touring, appearances on PBS’ Dance in America series, and a period as the official company of the Brooklyn Academy of Music. I’m not surprised that people s t i l l c l i n g t o t h e s e d i v i s i o n s . S o m e w h o love classical masterpieces may need to feel reassured by their sophistication, looking down on popular culture as dis- posable and inferior. Meanwhile, pop music fans can dismiss classical music lovers as elitist snobs, out of touch with reality and hopelessly “square.” Fortunately, music isn’t so black and white, and such classifications, especially of new music, are becoming ever more anachronistic. With the benefit of time, much of our country’s greatest music, once thought to be merely “popular,” is now taking its rightful place in the category of “American Classics.” I was educated in an environment that was dismissive of much of our great American music. Wanting to be regarded as a “serious” musician, I found myself going along with the thinking of the times, propagated by our most rigid conservatory student in the 1970’s, I grew work that studiously avoided melody or key academic composers and scholars of up convinced that Aaron Copland was a signature. the 1950’s -1970’s.     ANNUAL REPORT 2019/20 Fadi Kheir Fadi LETTERS FROM THE LEADERSHIP The New York Philharmonic’s 2019–20 season certainly saw it all. We recall the remarkable performances ranging from Berlioz to Beethoven, with special pride in the launch of Project 19 — the single largest commissioning program ever created for women composers — honoring the ratification of the 19th Amendment. Together with Lincoln Center we unveiled specific plans for the renovation and re-opening of David Geffen Hall, which will have both great acoustics and also public spaces that can welcome the community. In March came the shock of a worldwide pandemic hurtling down the tracks at us, and on the 10th we played what was to be our final concert of the season. Like all New Yorkers, we tried to come to grips with the life-changing ramifications The Philharmonic responded quickly and in one week created NY Phil Plays On, a portal to hundreds of hours of past performances, to offer joy, pleasure, solace, and comfort in the only way we could. In August we launched NY Phil Bandwagon, bringing live music back to New York. Bandwagon presented 81 concerts from Chris Lee midtown to the far reaches of every one of the five boroughs. In the wake of the Erin Baiano horrific deaths of Black men and women, and the realization that we must all participate to change society, we began the hard work of self-evaluation to create a Philharmonic that is truly equitable, diverse, and inclusive. The severe financial challenge caused by cancelling fully a third of our 2019–20 concerts resulting in the loss of $10 million is obvious.

    SHEDDING LIGHT ON BULGARIAN SYMPHONY ORCHESTRAS /PIANO or FORTЕ/ Brief historic notes Orchestral music-making in Bulgaria goes back to mid-nineteenth century when in the Northeastern, multilingual town of Shumen the first ensemble was founded. It had entertainment and promotional purposes rather than serious concert activities. The significance of the ensemble though is mainly in the first establishment of a repertoire (Bulgarian and foreign) which was suitable for performance, as well as bringing together professionally educated national musicians and music-makers. Over WW2 orchestras developed in Bulgaria in lows and peaks. Those days gave rise to the Guards Orchestra (1892) conducted by Joseph Hohola; the Academic Symphony Orchestra (1928) and the Royal Military Symphony Orchestra (1936)both founded in Sofia by Prof. Sasha Popov; the State Philharmonic Orchestra at the National Opera (1935). At concerts in Bulgaria and abroad they perform major works by national and international musical classics. These ensembles invited outstanding guest conductors and soloists – Fausto Magnani, Karl Bohm, Bruno Walter, Edmondo de Vecchi, Emil Kupper, Carlo Zecchi, Henry Marteau, Paul Wittgenstein, Dinu Lipatti etc. After the end of the war the dynamic history of Bulgarian orchestras included both the above listed and numerous new ensembles founded all over the country. The Sofia Philharmonic Orchestra continued the tradition of the Sofia-based ensembles. The Philharmonic has performed with conductors Konstantin Iliev, Dobrin Petkov, Vassil Stefanov, Vladi Simeonov, Dimitar Manolov, Yordan Dafov, Emil Tabakov etc. At approximately the same time the capital saw the rise and establishment of yet another outstanding ensemble – the Symphony Orchestra of the Bulgarian National Radio (1948).

    IGOR STRAVINSKY Symphony of Psalms BORN: June 17, 1882, in Oranienbaum (now Lomonosov), Saint Petersburg, Russia DIED: April 6, 1971, in New York City WORK COMPOSED: 1930 WORLD PREMIERE: December 13, 1930, at the Palais des Beaux-Arts, Brussels, Belgium; Société Philharmonique de Bruxelles, Ernest Ansermet conducting The latter years of the 1920s were an emotionally trying time for Stravinsky. He was carrying on an open affair with his mistress in Paris while his wife Katya was in the south of France dying of tuberculosis. (Katya was Stravinsky’s cousin, they married in 1906. She was diagnosed with the disease in 1914 after the birth of their fourth child and was confined to a sanatorium in the Alps where she died in March 1939.) He also was finding little success with his works from this time. Vivid musical evocations of disease, deterioration, debilitation, decay and denial abound in his 1927 work Oedipus Rex, which was a failure at its premiere in Paris. Serge Koussevitzky, Stravinsky’s publisher and conductor of the Boston Symphony Orchestra (also a virtuoso double bassist!), made a suggestion to Stravinsky that he should write something popular in order to have a success. The thought was for Stravinsky to write something the people could understand. However, Stravinsky thought it should be about something universally admired; he felt that society had lost the ability to share a sacred experience. Stravinsky was a devout member of the Russian Orthodox Church during most of his life. No doubt that this inspired him to compose the Symphony of Psalms. Even though it is a large choral piece, he called it a symphony to appease Koussevitzky because the request was for an orchestral work.

    MARTIN GEORGIEV’s artistic activity connects the fields of composition, conducting and research in a symbiosis. As a composer and conductor he has collaborated with leading orchestras and ensembles, such as the Brussels Philharmonic, BBC Symphony Orchestra, Bulgarian National Radio Orchestra, Heidelberg Philharmonic Orchestra, Sofia National Philharmonic Orchestra, National Orchestra of Belgium, Azalea Ensemble, Manson Ensemble, Cosmic Voices choir, Isis Ensemble and Ensemble Musiques Nouvelles. More recently he was Composer in Residence to the City of Heidelberg - 'Komponist für Heidelberg 2012|13", featuring the orchestral commission The Secret which premiered in 2013 with the Heidelberg Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by the composer. Since 2013 he works as Assistant Conductor for the Royal Ballet at ROH Covent Garden, London, where he is involved with a number of world premieres. In 2010-11 he was SAM Embedded Composer with the BBC Symphony Orchestra, London. He has completed a PhD doctorate in Composition at the Royal Academy of Music, University of London (2012), in which he developed his Morphing Modality technique for composition. He also holds Masters' degrees in both Composition and Conducting from the Royal Academy of Music and the National Academy of Music 'Pancho Vladigerov', Sofia, Bulgaria. Born in 1983 at Varna, Bulgaria, he is based in London since 2005, holding both Bulgarian and British citizenship. He is a laureate of the International Composers' Forum TACTUS in Brussels, Belgium, where his works featured in the selection in 2004, 2008 and 2011; the Grand Prize for Symphonic Composition dedicated to the 75th Anniversary of the Sofia National Philharmonic Orchestra in 2003; the UBC Golden Stave Award in 2004; orchestral commission prize in memory of Sir Henry Wood by the Royal Academy of Music, London, in 2011; he was a finalist of the Hindemith Prize of the Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival in Germany in 2011 and a recipient of 15 prizes from national and international competitions as a percussionist.
