A resident has informed us that a man in a large saloon, black “Mercedes-type” car with darkened windows is go- ing around Shankill dumping rubbish in other people’s bins. Clearly this person is cutting down on the cost of bin charges by using other people’s bins. He was also seen, on several occasions during May, dropping general household rubbish as well as a load of heavy slates which could have been left over from a building project into a skip in Shanganagh Grove. Residents should not be expected to pay for disposal of other people’s rubbish.

We were in some style as the team togged out in the luxury dressings rooms beneath the Cusack Stand then on to the warm up room into the tunnel and finally out onto the field. The Go Games formula is quite simple; everyone gets a game no sitting on the bench. 12 SCAN Website: www.scanshankill.com MARCH 2016 St. Anne’s National School

So this month I interviewed Michael Dooley who is a student in Mrs. Black’s class and Ms. Olson one of the Senior Infant teachers. Starting with Michael, he really likes school and his teacher because he said both are fun! They do lots of Maths, English, and Irish in his class. He loves most subjects. Best part of his day is playing with his friends in yard. In one word he described school as “good”! And Michael, if you’re reading, thank you very much for that-great interview! Next I had a very interesting conversation with Ms. Olson. She loves being a teacher in St. Anne’s because of the lovely atmosphere, the children here are always happy and smiling, and it is a nice place to teach. She has been teaching here for two years, and last year she was teaching resource. Prior to St. Anne’s she taught in St. Peter’s in Bray and last year she actually split her time between both schools! She said the funniest thing she has experienced in St Anne’s was just recently watching the children’s reactions when the chicks hatched out of their eggs in her classroom. She loves Maths time because they play lots of games, and she believes the children enjoy doing maths through play. The reason she loves teaching is because for her every day is different, no two days are the same, and you meet and get to know so many wonderful children. The big news in Ms. Olson’s class was the famous chicks (Mario and Lu-Cheapy). They went from eggs to chicks in her classrooms. Unfortunately they grow up too quickly and the class had to say goodbye. The good news is that they have gone to a new home where they are very happy.

Thank you for reading. Join us next time for another great interview! By Ava Mulcahy

D.E.A.R. (Drop Everything and Read) Scoil Mhuire has many initiatives to encourage the children to read. D.E.A.R. is one of them. Several times a week the children are brought to the school library. They change their books if necessary, and settle down to read in a quiet, calm environment. They enjoy this time very much.

First Holy Communion 2017 The First Holy Communion of the children in the two Second Classes took place at Sunday Mass in early May. Pictured above are the communicants with their teachers, Ms. Downey and Ms. McDonagh.

5th and 6th Class at the Pavilion Theatre Fifth and Six Class went to the Pavilion to see the one man play, “Private Peaceful”. They met the actor, Shane O’Regan, on the D.A.R.T., on the way back to school and discovered that he lived in Shankill! The children and teachers took the opportunity to get a photo with this up-and-coming actor. Pictured above are Mrs. Morgan, Deputy Principal, class teachers, Ms. Power and Ms. O’Connell, Shane O’Regan and some of the pupils who attended the play.

Financiers of the Future Transition year students from St. Laurence’s College came into to talk to the Sixth Class about Build-a-Bank, a project they had undertaken and for which they had won a prize. They explained how banks work, showed how to open bank Searching for Marine Life on Shankill Beach accounts and how to set up a mini company. Our past month has been one of activity. We had an Active week whereby all pupils wore orange t-shirts and we got active every day.

Here in Rathmichael we believe in keeping the body fit. We tend not to limit activity to just the one week and include many other sports throughout the year. Some of these are cricket, GAA, football, tag rugby, golf and swimming.

We had a golf day for 3rd to 6th classes. Pupils were introduced to skills in golf. They enjoyed this. It is through experiencing many sports at this level that children find an avenue for themselves to get involved in. You will never get all children excited about each event but many go on to join clubs once they have discovered a new activity or a sport which works for them.

Not every child is fit and energetic but most of them can walk. One of the challenges last month was to get walking.a scan march _scan oct good.wed 19/02/2016 12:29 Page 20 Pupils had to see how many times they could walk around the pitch in 5 minutes. Classes regularly go out to see how their running skills are doing.

We got involved in a Dance Day in aid of the Down Syndrome Centre this year. Each class had to dance in front of the school. It was fun and we raised money for a good cause in so doing. YOGA AND Obesity is a problem and is certainly one worth tackling. RELAXATION Encouraging healthy eating and exercising regularly are what we encourage at Rathmichael.
