Monika Kostera – Professor Daved Barry
Monika Kostera ‘...a remarkable book, simultaneously profound, thought-provoking, and beautiful.’ – Professor Daved Barry Inspirations and Ideas for Self- Organization and Self-Management Organize Ourselves! Organize ‘This is a tremendously important text, standing out among the rising tide of studies and manifestoes aimed at tapping the heretofore neglected yet profuse supplies of human faculties and energies marginalized and suppressed by the orthodox bureaucratic model of management. It offers simultaneously a profound diagnosis of the current state of affairs, an exhaustive inventory of its limitations and deficiencies - as well as opening new vistas and presenting a thorough analysis of an art of management fit to avail itself of the novel opportunities the post- bureaucratic era might offer.’ – Zygmunt Bauman ‘In its playful style, its photographic illustrations from the author’s valuable collection, its joyful spirit, and its’ totally uninhibited mix of personal storytelling and poetry, this book draws the reader into the author’s private life with the free ranging discussion of ideas. It provides a welcome antidote to the stifling straightness of much academic writing.’ – Professor Yiannis Gabriel, University of Bath and University of Lund ‘This great book uses the idea of organization as an injunction to take back ‘management’ from those who wish to make it a discipline based on hierarchy and order. Monika Kostera celebrates all the things in heaven and earth that are not dreamed of in conventional managerialism, and use them as springboards to different ways of thinking about management. Read this book if you want to ‘occupy management’, to make management yours, and make a form of knowledge that can be used by the 99%.’ – Professor Martin Parker, Bristol University i ii Organize Ourselves! iii Published by Mayfly Books. -
Zanzibar Island, Tanzania
Zanzibar Island, Tanzania Zanzibar is renowned for white sandy beaches, exquisite remnants of Stone Town, the Swahili culture, aroma of exotic spices, azure cloudless skies, diverse coastal reefs and pervading Indian Ocean. It's no wonder that French Poet Rimbaud once sought inspiration from this charming destination. This archipelago is a winning combination of Arabic, Persian, and Indian culture. Wait no more and start your expedition to this less explored 'Coast of the Blacks.' History Zanzibar was originally inhabited by the Bantu people from mainland of Africa 3,000-4,000 years ago. The name of this group of islands was derived from the Persian word 'Zangi-bar' (Zangi = Black, Bar = the Place of). Later, the Arabian invaders changed it to Zanzibar. Things to Do in Zanzibar Look no further than Zanzibar, this place is best equipped for trying out something for the very first time such as riding a Dhow (traditional wooden sailboats) on the sea or kite-surfing on a beach. Explore Stone Town (Mji Mkongwe) – It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site since the year 2000. House of Wonders (Beit-al-Ajaib) is the most recognized landmark in this old part of the city. The Old Fort, The Palace Museum, The Anglican cathedral of Christ Church, Hamamni Persian Baths, and Slavery Memorial are main tourist attractions here. About 50 mosques and a few Hindu temples speak for the multiculturalism of this enchanting town. Visit Museums: Beit el-Sahel, Beit el-Ajaib, and Beit el-Amani offer an insight into rich Swahili culture, history of East Africa, and marine life of Indian Ocean. -

Remembering the Dark Years (1964–1975) in Contemporary Zanzibar Marie-Aude Fouéré French Institute for Research in Africa (IFRA), Nairobi, Kenya In the islands of Zanzibar (Unguja and Pemba), the memories of violence and repression perpetrated by revolutionaries and the state from 1964 to 1975 have long been banished from the public space. The official narrative of the 1964 Revolution and the first phase of the post-revolutionary periodi developed and propagated by the Revolutionary Government of Zanzibar, through a control over the production, transmission, and circulation of ideas, combined with repressive measures against dissenting voices, led people to keep their memories private. The official injunction calling for silence did not bringabout a forgetting of the past, but rather contributed to the clandestine transmission and reconstruction of fragments of individual, familial, and community memories within private circles. -

For one year 16 students worked together on the topic of informal settlements and tried to answer the question how to provide basic infrastructure in those settlements. Besides this, one aim of the project was to reflect the German understanding of plan- ning and to get an impression of the completely different conditions in which planning has to take place in developing countries. During the work the project dealt with prob- lems of urbanisation in developing countries and the inability of the government to re- spond to it. -

Interest Based Ad He’s mastered piano riffs, guitar chords, synth codes and keys. Up next— calligraphy. Maybe not quite, but Chris Walla has always drawn on China for inspiration. That Mandarin fixation sets itself far apart from any of his other endeavours—playing and producing for indie super troupe Death Cab For Cutie, or personals hopping behind the studio mixing boards for countless other all star songwriters like The Decemberists and Tegan and Sara. To tap into that Chinese muse, he needed nothing more than his father’s briefcase and business plans. “My dad spent a good chunk of my childhood in China and he always loved it,” the songwriter and producer says of his father’s Far East business trips while working for the Boeing Airline Company in the mid to late 1980s. -
