  • Other Grease Pencils and Markers
OTHER GREASE PENCILS AND MARKERS After writing an online essay about Listo mechanical grease pencils (aka china markers, crayon pencils, etc.), I took an inventory of all the other brands of “markers” that had stuck to my hands over the years. I found two dozen! When I stroll the outdoor and indoor antiques and collectibles markets in this area, I pick up anything that looks like fun and is in my price range, i.e. cheap - - Frank Dubiel (RIP) and I had a lot in common. (Also, if you’ve read my other essays, you know I am first and foremost an Autopoint, Realite and Realpoint collector.) So I’m going to show you a sort of “parade” of markers which 1)vary between mechanical instruments and simple “clamp the lead” devices, 2)use a wide variety of diameters of grease or crayon type leads, and 3)are made from various materials like wood, plastic, and metal. I’ll lead off with Autopoint’s sole offering first, then retreat to what I suspect is the oldest marker in my collection, and work toward the most modern of the markers that I found. A WORD ABOUT MARKERS AND LEAD REFILLS SIZES: Autopoint, Listo and many other manufacturers made “checking pencils” along with their production of “normal” mechanical pencils, especially in the 1920s, 1930s and 1940s. Autopoint probably made a hundred different styles of “regular” mechanical pencils, but it also made a wide variety of “checking” pencils over those years. Most of Autopoint’s early mechanical pencils either used .046” diameter (“standard”) or .036” diameter (“real thin”) leads, but its “checking” leads were .076” in diameter (or ~1.93mm).

Proceedings of the International Conference on Mechanical Engineering 2011 (ICME2011) 18-20 December 2011, Dhaka, Bangladesh ICME11-FL-013 AN EXPERIMENTAL AERODYNAMIC STUDY OF A SERIES OF RUGBY BALLS Victor Djamovski and Firoz Alam School of Aerospace, Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering, RMIT University, AUSTRALIA. ABSTRACT The aerodynamic properties of oval shaped balls, rugby balls and Australian Rules (AFL) football, exhibit peculiar trends which impacts sharply on the balls flight trajectory; with a kicking efficiency of only 60% amongst elite footballers in AFL and NRL, understanding the physics behind oval shaped balls can be very perplexing. Very little literature has been made available on the aerodynamic characteristics of oval shaped balls, under non-spinning conditions. The rugby and AFL footballs are asymmetric by design, and hence can rotate both laterally and longitudinally, not to mention an offset angle to these axes of rotation. Initial tests of three differing rugby balls, positioned at a zero pitch angle but with a varying yaw angle have been analysed with curious results. Subsequently, a look into the flow around these balls was studied using flow visualisation methods of wool tuft and smoke flow. Keywords: Drag, Wind Tunnel, Yaw Angle, Rugby Ball, Flow Visualization. 1. INTRODUCTION well-rounded set of results for a major cross-section of The aerodynamic properties of sports balls play an the rugby ball market. By comparing three distinctly integral role in the way in which a sports ball behaves different balls, we will be enabled to also understand during flight, affecting the balls‟ speed and trajectory. what the best design regarding surface geometry and ball Apart from the research conducted by Alam et al.

  • Super Retail Group
THE BUSINESS CASE FOR PACKAGING SUSTAINABILITY Super Retail Group Effective Engagement to optimise and recycle packaging THE BUSINESS CASE FOR PACKAGING SUSTAINABILITY Summary Super Retail Group sells automotive, camping and sporting goods through its own stores in Australia. The proportion of own brand products is increasing, which provides the company with more influence over primary and distribution packaging. This case study describes two projects that have achieved multiple business benefits through effective engagement with trade partners and contractors. A ‘packaging optimisation’ project is reducing costs of packaging and transport through light-weighting, reduced air space and increased recycled content. At the same time, a proactive waste management plan is increasing waste diversion and reducing waste management costs in stores. Lessons from this case study • Stakeholders are more likely to support a project if they are part of the decision making process from the beginning. • Outline the benefits in a way that makes sense to each stakeholder by focusing on something that is meaningful to them, such as costs or sales. • Collect the data that will help you to sell the benefits. Monitor progress and provide regular feedback to keep people motivated. • Optimise packaging by working collaboratively with suppliers: o clearly outline your packaging goals in policies and specifications o review packaging early in the procurement process and provide feedback on how it could be improved o recognise high-performing suppliers. About the company Super Retail Group is one of Australia’s top ten retail companies with nine brands: Super Cheap Auto, BCF, Rays Outdoors, FCO, Avanti Fitness, Workout World, AMART Sports, Rebel and Goldcross Cycles.
