  • Cardinal Becciu, in the Beatification of Edvige Carboni, Praises the New Blessed’S Passion for Wounded Humanity
    N. 190615b Saturday 15.06.2019 Cardinal Becciu, in the beatification of Edvige Carboni, praises the new Blessed’s passion for wounded humanity Cardinal Giovanni Angelo Becciu, prefect of the Congregation for the Causes of Saints celebrated the Holy Mass for the beatification of Edvige Carboni (1880-1952) today in Pozzomaggiore, Sassari, Sardinia, Italy. A Franciscan tertiary, she supported the work of her brothers through her work as an embroiderer, and spent her life alternating between domestic work and prayer. She had extraordinary supernatural gifts and in 1911, the wounds of the passion of Christ appeared on her body. In his homily, the Cardinal remarked that for many years Edvige Carboni “lived an ordinary life, from the outside the same as that of so many laypeople, but extraordinary in terms of her intimacy with God, her union with Him, to the point of identifying with Jesus in a perfect and transforming union with Him, the spouse of souls. Friend of the poor and the marginalized, she had words of consolation for everyone; she loved to repeat, ‘One must always infuse comfort and hope’”. “One is struck by the inner fortitude and by the granitic faith with which, first in her town and then in the cities of Lazio following her sister, the new Blessed lived a life in the service of the family and among simple household chores, to which she added exemplary activity within the parish and a fervent apostolate of charity”, he continued. “If we ask what are the strong points of the Christian life of this sister of ours, and which lead her to be an example of welcoming prayerfulness and humble and joyful abnegation, we would say that there are essentially two: constant contemplation of the Crucified Lord and the adoration of the Eucharist.

The Holy See VISIT OF THE HOLY FATHER FRANCIS TO THE EARTHQUAKE-AFFECTED AREAS OF THE DIOCESE OF CAMERINO-SAN SEVERINO MARCHEPOPE FRANCISANGELUS Trinity Sunday, 16 June 2019 [Multimedia] Yesterday, Edvige Carboni, a simple woman of the people who embraced the Cross in her humble everyday life, bearing witness to faith and charity, was beatified in Pozzomaggiore, Sardinia. Let us give thanks for this faithful disciple of Christ who spent her entire life at the service of God and of others. A round of applause for the newly Blessed, everyone! We wish to remember refugees in a special way on the World Day that the United Nations dedicates to them. This occurrence invites everyone to solidarity with men, women and children fleeing war, persecution and violations of fundamental human rights. May our ecclesial and civil communities be close to them and attentive to their needs and their suffering. I am also following with concern the escalation of tensions in the Persian Gulf. I invite everyone to make use of the tools of diplomacy to resolve the complex problems of conflict in the Middle East. I also renew my heartfelt appeal to the international community to make every possible effort to promote dialogue and peace. At the end of this celebration, I cordially greet all of you present here. I offer an affectionate greeting to the sick, the elderly, the imprisoned and all those who are spiritually united to this Holy Mass via radio and television. I offer my heartfelt gratitude to those — institutions, entities, associations and individual persons — who have worked for this short but intense visit of mine, generously collaborating with the Archdiocese of Camerino - San Severino Marche.

  • Saint Francis of Paola
Saint Francis of Paola SAINT OF THE DAY 02-04-2020 The life of the Calabrian mystic and founder of the Order of Minims, called “the other Francis” for his charity, was marked by the gift of faith from his conception. His parents named him Francis in honour of St. Francis of Assisi, whom they invoked to receive the grace of having a child, who finally came to them after about 15 years of marriage. They thanked Heaven, but probably never imagined that this child would become known in history as Saint Francis of Paola (1416-1507). Years later they also had a little girl, whom they called Bridget. But in the meantime they had to ask again for the intercession of the Saint of Assisi because their son, one month after birth, had contracted a serious infection that put his left eye at risk. The parents prayed for his recovery, vowing to send him to the Franciscans for a whole year. The illness passed. Francis soon manifested his inclination to religious life, growing up in a spirit of humility and prayerfulness. At the age of 13 he had a vision of a Franciscan friar who asked him to fulfil the vow made by his parents: he entered the convent, where he remained for a year living in perfect obedience to the Franciscan rule. The friars would have liked him to stay, but he wanted to deepen his vocation before choosing how to consecrate himself to God. To this end he went on pilgrimage to Rome, Montecassino, Loreto and Assisi.
