Welcome to the January edition and what is also the first of the second decade of the club magazine.

Thanks to Sharon Corden and Duncan Smart for their interesting Mini Biographies.

This edition contains a large amount of data due to the time of year, when the entire Road Race stats for 2017 and the start of 2018 are both included. I have also published the latest stats re participation in Cross Country for the current season, and an updated Race Fixture List which includes not only the club’s favourite events, but also every race that at least one club member competed in last year. I have also added several races that club members have suggested. I am awaiting the dates etc for the East Hull Harriers Winter Series.

Whilst the total road races club members took part in is a new method of recording, it must be certainly the case that participation overall has greatly increased. This month the attendance at the Brass Monkey increased from 9 last year to 27 even though it is difficult to enter on-line as the event sells out in hours – as did our own 10 K race last October for the first time. The attendance at the East Cross Country League meetings keeps breaking club records this season. The total of 40 at Langdale was bettered by 41 at Sledmere. It is most probable that other events such as fell and trail, have enjoyed increased popularity as I reported on 399 events during the year. In 2016 the total was 306. QED!

Good luck to all for all their 2018 events, which will see the return of a Senior Track and Field League.

Sean Kelly was welcomed to the meeting as new Committee Member

Correspondence: None to report.

Notes of last meeting - matters arising: It has become necessary to establish a new drainage system for the long jump area at tbe Rugby Club. The original contractors have quoted £8,700 plus VAT. It was agreed that Harry Forkin contact the contractors with a view to going ahead and confirming the terms of a guarantee for the work. Different types of container are being considered to replace the old one currently at the Pindar's site and to be moved to the Rugby Club site.

Sharon Corden

Years as a runner; I really believe that people come into your life for a reason. I won’t bore you all, it’s a long story. But this person got me into running about 3 years ago. Now I never listen to people that say they can’t run, whatever ability anyone can! So, after 6 months the first race I entered was Scarborough 10k, then trying to be impressive, 6 months after that I went straight on to my first marathon in Edinburgh! After a while I realised I didn’t need to try and impress anyone and it became a journey about finding me again and falling in love with running, getting fit and how amazing that made me feel. Joining Scarborough running club just before was the best thing I ever did. I have met so many amazing people and athletes that I now feel proud to call my friends. They have always given the most amazing support and continue to be an inspiration to me. I’m not addicted, as you know there is usually a but! Since then I have completed 4 marathons 12 half marathons and a number of 10 mile and 10k, park runs etc! Recently I have got trail shoes and hit the Cross-Country mud!!! I know there is much more to come, and I can’t wait.

Favourite Race; My favourite race has to be Edinburgh your 1st always sticks in your mind right. Taking antibiotics and laryngitis was not in the plan. However, I pushed myself beyond anything I could ever imagine. It was a challenge I was always going to achieve, from all the support from family and friends, raising money for Multiple Sclerosis in memory of my late mum, seeing my son at mile 21 feeling so broken, finally the finish and falling to my knees in the middle of a field sobbing …everyone needs to do it at least once!!!

Favourite female athlete; Paula Radcliffe she once said, ‘Never set limits, go after your dreams, don't be afraid to push the boundaries. And laugh a lot - it's good for you!’ What a brilliant ethos and the fact she can run a marathon nearly faster than I can run a half is pretty impressive!

Favourite male athlete; It has to be Ben Smith after meeting him, running with him and totally respecting his achievements. 401 marathons is incredible and he is such an inspiration.

Best performances: York marathon 2016 4.36 Brass Monkey York 2.03 Park run Dalby - 5k 26.01.

Targets - Apart from always finishing whatever I set out to do even if it means coordinating running and throwing up! sub 25 5 k, sub 50 10k, sub 2 13.1 miles sub 4.30 26.2 I know compared to others this might be easy but one thing running has taught me along many other things is, it doesn’t matter about anyone else it is only ever about you being the best you can be.

Ambitions; I want to complete the 6 world major marathons, and this year I am taking part in my first sprint triathlon 2018

Funniest moment; Your joking only 1? You know the story of the taxi driver in Dublin- ‘take us to the start….’ so won’t bore you with that!! Although was very funny and we are now a yearly booking.

I think more recently has been the squealing and laughing and Oh my Gods through all the mud on the cross country runs. You could hear me before seeing me.

I don’t know if it’s funny, but poor Paul Thompson’s moment of fame being interviewed by the TV cameras at the end of York marathon, got cut due to me throwing up next to him!! I don’t think he has forgiven me yet!

Duncan Smart

Years as a runner; I started running three years ago - I had been watching a friend participating in the local parkrun and it got me thinking ... I wonder if I could do that.

Although this it only a short time, I do come from a sprinting background, throughout my school years I competed at regional level. I was also fortunate to spend a couple of decades fencing at an international level, coached by Ümit Sina. Looking back now, it was Ümit’s Russian attitude to training which has helped develop my mindset and dedication to train for distance running.

Best performance; I am of the belief that my best performance is still to come, however, I have made some memorable life achievements along the way: completing my first marathon brought a tear to my eye (and now I’ve finished three marathons); being a member of the team that won the 2016 Hull Marathon relay.

Favourite race; There are many races that I enjoy, but I always think of Burton Pidsea 10K with fondness: it is a lovely course and the marshals are both welcoming and friendly.

Although not considered a race, I am a big fan and advocate of parkruns. The atmosphere and support for every runner or walker can be life changing ... I know I wouldn’t be where I am today with my racing if it wasn’t for parkruns.

Favourite female athlete; There are so many that I admire that I do not have a single favourite, however, Roberta Louise ‘Bobbi’ Gibb is a female athlete who I truly respect for what she achieved. Gibb was the first woman to run the Boston Marathon, her illegal run in 1966 challenged prejudices and misconceptions about women's athletic capabilities - truly inspiring

Favourite male athlete; This is Emil Zátopek, the ‘Czech Locomotive’, he won three gold medals in the 1952 Helsinki Olympics. Not only did he win gold in the 5000 and 10,000 metres, he also won gold in the marathon - a last minute decision to compete in his first ever marathon. It was Zátopek’s attitude to training that impresses me the most.

Targets; Frustratingly, I have not managed to record a sub-40minute 10k, although my GPS data often shows that I have during longer races. This is a glass-ceiling that I will break though this year. I’m also targeting a sub-19minute 5k.

Ambitions; I’ve been triathlon training over winter and I have several races planned this year, including a 70.3 half- IronMan distance event later in the year. My ambition is to qualify for the GB age-group triathlon team.

Funniest moment; At the 2017 Great North Run, I was in the holding pen just behind the elite runners, I could see Mo Farah ahead of me; Brendon Foster and Gabby Logan were live on the BBC and were standing on a scaffold platform just above my head. I realised that I needed to relieve myself. I left the pen and I stood behind a tree, when I looked up, I could still see these three people. It worried in case the camera panned around ... especially as this would not be good as many of my school students were watching it live.
