If Stanley Featherstonehaugh Ukridge had a fiver for every dodgy scheme he had ever floated, he would be a very rich man indeed. In Something Fresh , he keeps a revolver by his bed, with which to fire wildly at burglars or Rupert Baxter. The training continues apace, but Billson seems to be benefitting little. Length: 8 hrs and 16 mins. Pure fun. Incidentally, Blicester came to get two pounds ten shillings back. Twistleton, nephew to the Earl, and otherwise known as Pongo to his friends, has a differing view. The one thing that could be expected to disturb the peace of life at Blandings is the incursion of imposters. Mercutio The Oldest Member is, contrary to its potential for double entendre, the oldest member of a golf club, and there are three stories here of golfing, envy, love, hate and niblicks. The Crumpet tells the following story. Incidentally, Blicester came to get two pounds ten shillings back. The butler Oakshott , it emerges, having wowed Billson with his dignified manner, is now plying the boxer with an excess of food, cigars and port. You might at least have asked Mr Baxter how he was. It was no moment for shrinking back and counting the cost. Something Fresh By: P. Ukridge arrives at his friend Jimmy Corcoran 's house at 3 a. Wodehouse Collection Very Good Jeeves. Anyone watching Lord Emsworth totter blindly across the terrace would have foreseen that he would shortly collide with something, the only point open to speculation being with what he would collide. This might be one of the funniest short stories bordering on novellas in the English language. For Galahad has led a thoroughly misspent life, and his acquaintances can all too easily recall their past follies in his company. Finding Billson's training methods mostly involving ale and cigars somewhat lacking, Ukridge inveigles the big boxer into his Aunt's house as an odd-job man, allowing him to personally supervise the training regime. Collection of short stories including the extremely funny "The Crime Wave at Blandings". As a collection of short stories, Lambert has to create voices for a large number of characters, since the cast changes from story to story. Then, although his pince-nez had followed routine by flying off, he was able by some subtle instinct to sense that the intruder was his sister Constance, and an observation beginning with the words 'Good God, Connie! Waterbury thanks Freddie for saving him in the brawl, and plays on Freddie's sympathy to get some money from him. Wodehouse ". With the staff bribed to help, he fills the house with paying guests, and rakes in their money while playing the gracious host. Waterbury flees to a pub, where Freddie and Murphy follow. The first story which edges toward being a novella is a wonderful romp with the Lord Emsworth of the title and the whole gang at Blandings Castle. The frequent visits in later works of his disreputable brother Gally add further to life's complications and his sister Connie's frustrations. The man I told you about. Lord Emsworth and Others Reviews Ukridge calms the house, but on retiring to bed, finds Aunt Julia hiding in the cupboard, convinced the butler has gone insane. He is certainly the funniest. Beautifully narrated by Nigel Lambert. But a substantial obstacle lurks in the way: Queen of Matchingham, the new sow of Sir Gregory Parsloe. This was a shared read-aloud with Donald. Lists with This Book. An odd - but good - little smorgasbord In some ways this collection seems a bit odd: it starts with a fairly long Blandings Castle story a good one, in which the Efficient Baxter is pelted with air guns , which is followed by stories featuring several of Wodehouse's usual characters: Ukridge, Mulliner, The Oldest Member, etc. Corky, having had a story idea turned down by Hollywood , attacks the talking picture, but his friend Ukridge comes to its defence. A Pelican at Blandings ; completed novel Sunset at Blandings unfinished novel. The Efficient Baxter has returned to tor I turned to this book, one of my favorites by Wodehouse, when I needed a break from some more serious reading. It is all settled. Freddie sings well, but a red-headed man in the audience, "Ginger" Murphy, recognizes Waterbury. For once in your life I want you to be firm. The betrothal of Evangeline Brackett to Angus McTavish is built, in large part, on the way she bites her lip and rolls her eyes when she tops her drive, says the Oldest Member. Then came some Ukridge stories, about a man who continually comes up with wacky money-making schemes, only to see them coll This truly was a delightful set of stories. He dropped Whiffle and sat panting. The man seemed to go through the world in a restless fear lest some action of his might make him look silly. Add to Wish List failed. Note that some marriages occur during the Blandings series of stories, and the spouses of Lord Emsworth's nieces and nephews are not included in this list. Freddie Threepwood is poised to make his debut as a jewel thief. Lord Emsworth may be the funniest of P. Wodehouse's characters -- all of them a ridiculous send-up the the British aristocracy. Also note that Lord Emsworth and his siblings are children of the previous Earl of Emsworth and thus have titles in accordance with forms of address for earls and their children in the UK. Wodehouse is now going to be a vacation go-to author. He had perceived that he had gone too far. Get A Copy. Meet Psmith, with a silent 'P' as in psychic. While Blandings Castle sleeps in the summer sun, the Hon. Lord Emsworth plays some part in all the novels and short stories in the Blandings canon. I'm at a disadvantage with these stories from the off, because other than the endless cricket reportage in the likes of Mike And Psmith, there's little that bores me more than stories depending on golf handicaps and scores. Westminster Abbey South Quire Aisle The Dedication of a Memorial Stone to P G Wodehouse Friday 20th September 2019 6.15 pm HISTORICAL NOTE It is no bad thing to be remembered for cheering people up. As Pelham Grenville Wodehouse (1881–1975) has it in his novel Something Fresh, the gift of humour is twice blessed, both by those who give and those who receive: ‘As we grow older and realize more clearly the limitations of human happiness, we come to see that the only real and abiding pleasure in life is to give pleasure to other people.’ Wodehouse dedicated almost 75 years of his professional life to doing just that, arguably better—and certainly with greater application—than any other writer before or since. For he never deviated from the path of that ambition, no matter what life threw at him. If, as he once wrote, “the object of all good literature is to purge the soul of its petty troubles”, the consistently upbeat tone of his 100 or so books must represent one of the largest-ever literary bequests to human happiness by one man. This has made Wodehouse one of the few humourists we can rely on to increase the number of hours of sunshine in the day, helping us to joke unhappiness and seriousness back down to their proper size simply by basking in the warmth of his unique comic world. And that’s before we get round to mentioning his 300 or so song lyrics, countless newspaper articles, poems, and stage plays. The 1998 edition of the Oxford English Dictionary cited over 1,600 quotations from Wodehouse, second only to Shakespeare.

Drawing on the work of, among many others, Susan Sontag, Rita Felski, and Peter Lamarque, I argue that P.G. Wodehouse, E.F. Benson, and Angela Thirkell wrote a type of pure comedy I call chaste camp. Chaste camp is a strange beast. On the one hand it is a sort of children’s literature written for and about adults; on the other hand it rises to a level of literary merit that children’s books, even the best of them, cannot hope to reach.

  • Index to Plum Lines 1980–2020
INDEX TO PLUM LINES 1980–2020 Guide to the Index: While there are all sorts of rules and guidelines on the subject of indexing, virtually none can be applied to the formidable task of indexing Plum Lines (and its predecessor, Comments in Passing), the quarterly journal of The Wodehouse Society, which was founded in 1980. Too many variables confront the task’s indexer—not to mention a few too many errors in how issues were numbered over the years (see Index to the Index, below). Consequently, a new sort of index has been created in such a way (we hope) as to make it as easy as possible to use. Following are some guidelines. 1. Finding what you want: Whatever you are looking for, it should be possible to find it using our handy-dandy system of cross-referencing: • SUBJECTS are in BOLD CAPS followed by a list of the relevant articles. (See the list of Subject Headings, below.) • Authors and Contributors (note that some articles have both an author and a contributor) are listed in uppercase-lowercase bold, last name first, with a list of articles following the name. • Regular columns are simply listed in bold under their own titles rather than under a subject heading. 2. Locating the listed article: Any article listed in the index is followed by a series of numbers indicating its volume number, issue number, and page number. For example, one can find articles on Across the pale parabola: 14.2.17; 15.4.13 in Volume 14, Number 2, Page 17 and Volume 15, Number 4, Page 13.

Wodehouse isn't as political as Wilde, he isn't quite as scathing in his criticism of society, and he isn't as bitingly funny, but that makes him no less entertaining. Tela editorial algo deslucida. Soft cover. I love Wodehouse but I suppose they do tend to run together a bit. This was Lord Emsworth's sister Lady Ann Warblington, who is mentioned in Something Fresh as subject to headaches and largely confined to her room, never to reappear in a Blandings novel again. It's very kind of you to keep offering me your dead mouse; but honestly, I have no use for it. Then we have Lord Emsworth, a gruff yet lovable but extremely forgetful man, who is liable to steal the silverware from a restaurant as most people would walk off with a cheap ballpoint pen. Details if other :. He thought highly of his mouse and it was beyond him to realize that I did not want it. Throw in all sorts of millionaires and mix-ups, maids and butlers, a loveable, old, potty Earl, and the beginning of the crime wave at Blandings, and you have the makings of either a rollicking musical comedy or a long series of delightful novels. There is even a Wooster lurking about. Tales of St. Of the Blandings Castle characters of note, the Efficient Baxter, secretary to Lord Emsworth more interested in gardening and furniture painting than in his numerous guests , is the one who pushes the story forward, acts as a self appointed crime investigator and is the victim of most of the jokes and pranks, a role that would later be taken by various village policemen.

  • “Across the Pale Parabola of Joy”: Wodehouse Parodist
Connotations Vol. 13.1-2 (2003/2004) “Across the pale parabola of Joy”: Wodehouse Parodist INGE LEIMBERG In his stories and novels Wodehouse never comments on his tech- nique but, fortunately, in his letters to Bill Townend, the author friend who first introduced him to Stanley Featherstonaugh Ukridge, he does drop some professional hints, for instance: I believe there are two ways of writing novels. One is mine, making the thing a sort of musical comedy without music, and ignoring real life alto- gether; the other is going right down into life and not caring a damn. (WoW 313) This is augmented by a later remark concerning autobiographic inter- pretations, especially of Shakespeare: A thing I can never understand is why all the critics seem to assume that his plays are a reflection of his personal moods and dictated by the circum- stances of his private life. […] I can’t see it. Do you find that your private life affects your work? I don’t. (WoW 360) In 1935, when he confessed to “ignoring real life altogether,” Wode- house had found his form. Looking at his work of some 25 years before, we can get an idea of how he did so. In Psmith Journalist (1912), for instance, that exquisite is indeed concerned with real life, but, ten years later, in Leave it to Psmith, he joins the Blandings gang and, finally, replaces the efficient Baxter as Lord Emsworth’s secretary, with hardly a trace of real life left in him. Opening one of Wodehouse’s best stories or novels is like saying, “Open Sesame!” or “Curtain up!” and from then on, in a way, nothing is but what is not.
