MARIST BROTHERS CLUB

YEARBOOK 2015/16 98th Season President’s Report

Another season has come and gone and yet again the club has again enjoyed various successes both on and off the field. The season kicked off with the club hosting the inaugural 16.8 tournament on the October long weekend to give players a hit before the season commenced. This weekend was a tremendous success for the club with all feedback from competing sides being positive. It would be remiss of me to mention the success of the weekend without acknowledging the hours of work put in by Luke Collings and Brad Cleaver along with various other volunteers who made sure the weekend went off without a hitch (also to Gabs who’s house became one of the main meeting points for a few months there). It’s looking like being back even bigger and better this year so get involved, as a player or volunteer, and enjoy the weekend. Unconfirmed rumours suggest there may even be a DJ this year?!?! 4th grade entered the season with a whole lot of enthusiasm with strong attendance at pre-season training, looking to go one better than last year. Unfortunately for the lads the season didn’t quite go as planned with inconsistent player availability through the club often meaning they were the worst hit. It’s a credit to the guys who turned up every week and our junior strength that they remained competitive and only just missed the finals (through some suspect dealings from Norths). Again trying to keep our wealth of junior numbers involved and progressing through the senior ranks, we decided to enter two teams into the 3rd grade competition. Both achieved successful seasons with Blue edging out Gold in the T20 final, the only T20 success for the club, before Gold went through to take out the Major Premiership in bizarre circumstances. Thanks to Andrew Maslen for his leadership of many juniors and Danny Parsons for again organising the Blue side this season. Our 2nd grade side were another to be hit by the player unavailability epidemic this year, even losing their skipper half way through the year. With the side using in excess of 30 players for the year consistency was always going to be hard to find, which proved to be the case. They eventually only missed out on 4th place by 2 points, to the eventual premiers, which shows how closely contested the comp was. It wasn’t all bad for the guys, with many of the young 2nd graders making successful appearances in 1st grade causing many selection headaches. LDCA 1st grade were taken on this year by Pat Martin, whose leadership from the top of the order and expert management of the many juniors proved a recipe for success and saw the side claim their 3rd straight Major Premiership. Well done to all the guys involved, especially the glut of junior talent who will be pushing for Hooker League places in the very near future. And finally to our Hooker League, who also saw a new captain in Brad Cleaver take the helm of a relatively young and inexperienced side at the start of the season. With many writing the side off before the season had begun the side were freed up to express themselves and did so expertly in the first half of the season, which saw them with a One Day final berth after finishing equal first through the round games. The side also made it back into the 2 day finals for the first time in a number of years before weather cruelled their chances of making a heroic chase in the semi-final. Well done to all who played this year and hopefully we’ll be back ready to take another step forward next season. Thanks to the continued efforts of all club members who volunteer throughout the season in various capacities, whether it be doing the covers or running the raffle, it’s these things that help our club remain the strong club we are. Special thanks also must go to Glen Lees for his continued masses of time and effort he puts into the club, Brad Cleaver for stepping up as HL captain and secretary, Craig Hamshaw for taking on the roles of club coach & selector (spending countless hours on the phone every week organising teams) and Luke Collings again for the enormous effort put in to organise the 16.8 weekend. Thanks must also go to our many sponsors, especially major sponsor the Rous Hotel, for their continued support this year. Hopefully you all enjoyed your summer of cricket and I look forward to seeing you all at pre-season training in a few months ready to rip into the 2016-17 season. Thanks again to Leesy for compiling the yearbook.

Hooker League had a fairly successful season, making the one day grand final, and the Two day semis, only to lose on both occasions to Cudgen who went on become the eventual competition winners. The season can be summarised in two halves, before Christmas and after Christmas. Before Christmas the team was on a roll sitting 2nd in the competition, and looking like the team to beat. After Christmas the team seemed to fall in a bit of a slump and only managed to win one game, however still managed to hold on to a semi-finals birth after holding off a fast finishing Alstonville in the last round. In the semis we were unfortunate that rain forced the game to be abandoned on the second day as we were sitting pretty at 0/11 chasing a mere 392 for victory. Well done to the guys on a great season, with each player during the season making their mark and proving that it truly was a good all round team effort. I’m sure the guys will come back bigger and better next season and make another push towards a premiership.

Brad ‘Skip’ Cleaver: Brad assumed the captaincy role at the start of the season and started solid with the bat scoring a 50 and an unbeaten 102 in the first few rounds. After that the runs dried up and he fell in a bit of a form slump. Brad was his usual self in the field sledging batsmen and more likely than not dropping them after giving them an earful (probably needs to rethink this tactic a little). Brad’s running between the wickets was again questionable throughout the year, being involved in a few run outs which were pretty much 100% his fault. Brad’s lowlight of the year was receiving his first ever golden duck, with his highlight being scoring his maiden 100.

Ash ‘Devil Eyes’ Simes: Ash had his best season in Hooker league thus far scoring 3 50’s and amassing 407 runs for the season. Ash’s new batting approach this year of charging the first or second ball of an innings was always a heart stopper for his team mates as he would generally either blast it for 4 or miss it by 2 feet. Midway through the season Ash rocked up to a game with his eyes blazing red looking as if he had either been possessed by the devil or had attended Nimbin’s mardi Grass for the week, he assured us that he hadn’t and could see clearly. 4 balls later when he was out for a duck we were questioning the latter. Ash’s lowlight of the year would have been the one day gf where his captain ran him out in the 2nd and where on the way home a truck ran into the team bus in which he was driving (neither of these incidents were his fault) and his highlight of the year was blasting a destructive 86 against Cudgen hitting them to all regions of the park.

Luke ‘Treadmill’ Collings: Luke was the old man of the team and had another outstanding season with the gloves, and contributed solidly when needed with the bat. Luke took 30 dismissals this year with the gloves which included 25 catches and 5 stumpings, all of which were up to either our opening bowlers or first change bowlers. Luke would annoy our teams’ quick bowlers by taking ridiculous leg side stumpings up to the stumps, making them look effortless, whilst we all looked on in dismay. Luke’s nickname treadmill comes from his running style with his arms and legs flapping around everywhere however he tends to go nowhere and run somewhat on the spot. Luke was always the first to shy away from the slow man’s race coming up with plenty of excuses. Luke’s lowlight of the year would have been being given out run out when the opposition keeper admitted to him that he had dropped and fumbled the ball but was going to claim it anyway. Luke’s highlight of the year would have been the numerous stumpings he made up to the quicks. Sam ‘I’ll take a week’s holiday’ Martin: Sam started the season off slowly with the bat, however after a few weeks he got into his grove and produced some solid scores. Sam also turned into an all-rounder in the team picking up 17 wickets for the season and bouncing many opposition batsmen. Half way through the season with the one day gf upon us Sam decided that he would go on a week’s holiday to Sydney, in which he tried to convince us all it was for work and that he wouldn’t be back. Low and behold after missing out on the gf Sam thought that he had been on holidays for too long and decided to come back and join the team again. Sam’s lowlight of the season was probably missing the gf for his holiday or claiming to have never dropped a catch in hooker league and then dropping two consecutive dollies. His highlight of the season was probably that of a ferocious spell that he bowled against Tintenbar in which he picked up 4/21 rattling the opposition batsmen’s stumps on numerous occasions.

Kaleb ‘meh’ Auld: Kaleb had his first full season in the top grade this year and made every post a winner. The normally quiet and reserved Kaleb seemed to come out of his shell this season and before Christmas was our best player by a country mile. If he wasn’t scoring runs he was getting wickets. Kaleb had a solid start to the year with the bat and compiled scores before Christmas. His batting seemed to drop off a little, however his bowling just got better and better. With every Kaleb took he seemed to gain a bit of swag and confidence about himself. When asked how he was feeling and if he wanted another over Kaleb would generally reply meh which I presumed meant yes? Kaleb is definitely a player to watch in the future and I expect to see big things from in years to come. Kaleb’s lowlight of the year would have been taking off for a run and being whist the ball was in the keeper’s gloves. Kaleb’s highlight was his 50 in the second round in which he went off at the end of the innings and played some ridiculous shots.

Jack ‘Coops’ Cooper: Playing in his first season of senior cricket Jack started the season off in reserve grade. It wasn’t long before we realised that he was too good to not play him in the top grade and he was promoted up into the hooker league team. At 14 Jack hits the ball with such timing and force and makes it look effortless at the same time whilst dispatching elite bowlers in the competition for 4s and 6s. Jack provided many highlights for the team this season, including one in which he blasted Alstonville’s Terry Murphy for a huge six on the leg side, after terry had just given him a lip full. Jack’s obvious talent earned him a spot this year in the NSW schools U/15’s side this year the highest selection you get at a school based level. Jacks lowlight of the year would have been the amount of times he seemed to get caught out on the boundary, with his highlight being that of his maiden hooker league 50 in which he produced a classy 85 in tough conditions and batted the best I’ve seen anyone of that age bat.

Stu ‘Big Stu’ Rose: Stuey had limited chances this season with bat and ball, however when needed could always produce a solid knock or a tight spell. Known for his effortless big hitting Stuey produced some monster 6s out at Tintenbar on a Sunday afternoon putting the bowlers into the hockey fields on numerous occasions. Stu also had a handy little knack of producing a wicket when handed the ball, with best figures of 3/27 against Ballina in a tense finish ensuring we came away with the win. Alongside Luke Collings, Stu was also one to shy away from the slow mans race coming up with excuses. In a pre-game ritual of juggling a football in a group circle Stu would always make the easy seem hard and always produced many a laugh between the guys. Stu’s lowlight of the year would have been given out lbw in the last round where the opposition were appealing for an attempted catch that fell short (one of the few times I’ve witnessed the big man angry). Stuey’s highlight of the year would be either his knock of 61 against Tintenbar or sitting off 20 overs in a one day match. Luke ‘Lammy’ Hamshaw: Similarly to Stu Luke had limited chances this season with the bat and ball, however when needed would produce the goods. Luke was always good for a solid 20 or 30 late in the innings and would always make it difficult for opposition bowlers to claim his wicket. Luke’s agility and enthusiasm in the field made him our best fielder for the season and made it hard for opposition batsmen to score runs through countless diving saves in the covers. Luke’s ability to get under opposition batsmen’s skin with relentless sledging was also constant throughout the season and at times not only gave the opposition a headache but also his own team. Luke’s lowlight of the season would have been his ability to get starts and not go on with them to produce that 50+ score. Luke’s highlight would have been his solid bowling spell against Cudgen of 4/40 which ensured victory on the day.

Jarred ‘Serena’ Seiffert: After coming back from overseas, where Jarred was the best cricketer in Indonesia, it took him a little time to get back settled into conditions. Once settled though Jarred started bowling well and scoring a few runs when given the chance. Jarred would constantly throw out some random fact which at times made you sit back and just scratch your head. Jared’s nickname Serena came from the Cudgen scorer who likened his big booty to that of Serena Williams. In a shortened year he was unable to find the brilliance with the bat this year as he did last year, however started to really bowl consistent at the end of the season and probably bowled the best I’ve seen him do in a while against Alstonville. Jared’s lowlight of the year would have been his duck in his first game back for the club. Jared’s highlight for the year would have been either his 48 in his second game back or his 3/17 against Alstonville in a 10 over spell.

Daniel ‘Damn Daniel’ Hamshaw: Daniel had his best season of hooker league thus far bowling with more consistency and even managing to score a few runs with the bat this season. Dan bowled with great consistency late in the season and produced some great spells of bowling, most notably his 3/23 against Alstonville. Dan also produced the catch of the season in gully in the second round where he got his go go gadget arm stretched out and plucked a one handed screamer out of the clouds. Dan’s quick wit in the field is always a pleasure to play alongside as he follows in his father and elder brother’s footsteps in stirring opposition batsmen. Dans lowlight of the season would have been his game against Tintenbar where he got 0 dropped an absolute dolly and got dispatched by an inform Abe Crawford (definitely a game Dan seems to forget). His highlight of the season would have been producing an unbeaten knock of 45 against Casino ensuring victory (a game Dan doesn’t seem to forget).

Brendan ‘Mr Consistent’ Mitchell: Brendo had another solid year with the ball and was Mr consistent picking up a wicket every game he bowled except one. Brendo managed 29 wickets for the year and was by far our most consistent player throughout the year. Brendo also managed to bat quite a bit this year and helped steer the team to victory against Casino putting on a 63 run last wicket partnership with Dan, in which Brendo managed 21. The only fault for Brendo this season would perhaps be his fielding, always blaming his poor eyesight on not picking up the ball, or even on the one occasion at Lennox jumping out of the way of a ball struck to him because he was scared it was coming to fast. Brendo’s lowlight of the season would be getting given out against Alstonville LBW, he was adamant he wasn’t out and certain the ball was missing (now he can see). His highlight for the season would have been having bowling figures 3/11 and 5/12 in consecutive weeks. Michael ‘Germo’ German: German was a new member for Marist brothers this year having played against us for years over at Goonellabah. German alongside Brendo formed a formidable opening bowling partnership with German taking 19 wickets for the season. German was able to bowl long tight spells throughout the season and produced many wickets not only at his end but at the other end frustrating batsmen into playing false shots. Germans ability to swing the ball back into the right handers had plenty of batsmen worrying, however not Pottsville’s Oscar who wasn’t worried one bit and decided to leave a jaffa from German which cleaned up his off stump. German alongside Stuey was also fortunate enough one game to sit off 20 overs in a one day match. With limited batting opportunities throughout the year German made the most of what he got smashing an unbeaten 19 against Lennox including a big 6. Lowlight of the season for German would have been the game against Tintenbar where he was told to bowl 2 feet outside off and did so and still somehow managed to get dispatched over cow corner for 6. Germans highlight for the season would have been his 4 wicket haul vs. Cudgen helping secure a victory.

Special thanks to those players that filled in for the year also and congrats to those who made their hooker league debut plenty of bright futures ahead: Kaden Ford, Oscar Stahl, Lachlan Barnsley, Jordan Salkeld, Craig Hamshaw, Dane Pratt, Tom Fiedler, Cooper Stahl, Doug Rose and Blake Fitzgerald Hooker League Name Innings N.O. The season began with a bang with Kadan Ford taking season best figures of 8/25 to trundle out Norths for 50 in the first game. Consistent bowling and fielding was a feature of first grade this year keeping us in and winning many games. Ryan Duyker topped the most wickets for us this year with Kadan Ford, Claude Jackson and Jordan Salkeld not far behind to round out our stocks. Joey Lee our all-rounder ably supported our bowlers with some good mediums and Cooper Stahl threw down a few tweakers as well. The old timers Ben Collins, Pat Martin and Claude Jackson all had solid seasons this year and Doug Rose managed to score the record for the most ducks of the season. These performances were bolstered by some rookies who put together some great performances like Lachlan Barnsley who scored more than 200 runs for the season and held our batting together on a number of occasions, Oscar Stahl who was part of the highest first wicket partnership of the season and older brother Cooper Stahl who on his day, was able to tear apart any bowling attack. Although we missed out on the minor premiership this year, we were the form team of the season and proved that by winning the Grand Final against Goonellabah comprehensively in outright fashion. All members of the side pulled together and played well as a team this year and everyone played in the spirit of the game. A special thank you needs to go to the Hamshaw’s, Leesy and the other club officials for all the work they put in running the club and to every other player that represented first grade out on the field this year. Losing numerous players from the top grades meant many of our more talented youngsters (& Claude) got an opportunity in higher grades. Due to the modern trend of men being told what they want to do by their partners, many of our senior second graders, supposedly in the prime of their life, were unavailable. Despite the ongoing struggle to fill a team we remained competitive with several narrow losses seeing us miss the finals by three points. Batting was a major disappointment as quite simply we didn’t score enough runs with only two fifties scored for the season. The positive side was the improvement & opportunity for several juniors who should develop further in future seasons.

Jeremy Prosser – Started the season as Skipper however like so many good men before him disappeared half way through the season as his wife decided he had better things to do. Hopefully his performance on the home front holding the new arrival was better than his slips performance.

Matt Cleaver – Matt had a solid season opening the batting and seeing off the new ball. Needs to convert his numerous starts and showed his capability with a first grade 50 late in the season. Matt was the leading wicket taker in the Cleaver family this season and his intimidation of Souths was memorable.

Tyson Priestly – Tysons’s technique and ability means he should be scoring heavily in second grade. Unfortunately he hasn’t as yet but hopefully it will all click next season. Season’s strong point was probably his enthusiasm and performance in the field.

Wil Parsons - Wil started the season well with the bat with a 50 first game. Unfortunately this meant he started thinking trophies and took up the challenge of catching Doug Rose in the duck hunt. Wil was reliable in the field and as always with his offies, picking up regular wickets throughout the season.

Treavis Jenkins – Trev played again this season, well when he turned up he played. When he wasn’t walkabout Trev could be relied upon to accelerate the run rate, unfortunately it tended to be for a good time and not a long time. Covered many miles as our first choice boundary rider as the package of run, catch & throw seems to be a rarity these days.

Rino DeGuisti – Rino was one of the few from Zorzo’s 14/15 team that backed up again this season. Rino was always good for some sort of contribution, whether it be a swing of the bat, a few overs or first stint at square leg. Was a regular wicket taker bowling either leggies or seamers depending on what the conditions dictated.

Craig Hamshaw – Started the season making up numbers when required however after losing a couple of players including Captain Prosser assumed the leadership. Also returned to the top of the order regularly managing to get to 20 odd before running out of puff. Introduced Captain Cranky to several of the younger members of the team.

Ryan Lee – Ryan’s improvement with the ball was probably the highlight of the season. Could probably have taken more wickets however was often too good for the batsman (& umpires). Ended the season taking 4 for 11 in the first grade final. There is still improvement to come with bat, ball & in the field.

Brendan Coffey – What a choice! Second game of the season rec 8, ten men, go to 4ths at rec 10, Quinny or Coffey? Go for youth, the youngster gets the nod and spends the rest of the season in seconds, ends up the leading wicket taker & first choice umpire. Batting & fielding – as many ducks as dropped catches, wish we had Quinny.

James Fennamore - Youngster who started the season in thirds earning promotion after some tidy returns. Showed his full potential by taking 7 for 25 to skittle eventual major premiers Evans Head. Bowls tidy line and length with nice shape and should improve further in coming years.

Jacob Dhesi - Ended the season when dropped.

Josh Hollis – Ended the season in seconds possibly vindicating the phrase – children should be seen and not heard.

We took out the Minor and Major premierships in the T20 competition. In the T20 final we played against Marist Brothers Gold which was a very exciting game as it went down to the very last ball. We did however struggle in the 40 over format finishing the season off in fifth place.

Rod Lees - Rod was the backbone of our batting line up which was highlighted by some big scores. Rod’s highest score was 108 and this was backup with 4 half centuries during the season. I am sure he would like to thank his major sponsor VB!!!

Troy Hughes - Troy opened the batting for us this year getting a lot of good starts and being a good partner for Rod Lees. Troy’s top score was 41 against Souths. Troy had an injury free season except for some gout and sun stroke towards the end.

Greg Huxtable - As always Greg doesn’t like staying out in the middle for too long so therefore scored his runs pretty quickly. This was very handy for the T20 games. He did however stay out in the middle a little longer than usual to score 169 against Norths and also 2 half centuries during the season.

David Parsons – As our opening bowler Dave was always very competitive. When the skipper asked for a tight spell, Dave always delivered. Dave’s best bowling was against Workers Red taking 2 for 4 off 8 overs in a 40 over match.

Ben Bellos – Ben (B1) was our other opening bowler and was our most successful bowler this year. Ben’s best bowling was against Easts in a T20 game taking 3 for 8 off 4 overs. He also got 3 for 17 off 8 overs against Souths in a 40 over match.

Sam Bellos - Sam was a newcomer to the game of cricket. He quickly became a handy all-rounder. Sam always got a start with the bat with his top scores being 46, 27 and 22. He was also handy with the ball achieving 3 for 16 off 6 overs against Workers Red.

Greg Stewart – Greg filled in as opening batter when our regulars were unavailable. Greg’s top score was 16 against Souths. Greg has taught this team how to dig their toes in when it really matters.

John O’Brien – John has made a big improvement on last year by taking 15 wickets and scoring runs consistently. His best figures were 3 for 22 off 6 overs and his highest score was 36 against Goonellabah. He will be seeking special permission to take a baseball glove onto the field next season.

Ben Lynch – Ben (B2) was an import player from town this season. He struggled with the higher altitude when playing at home. He managed to put together a couple of good scores against Brothers Gold scoring 33 and 30. B2 was also handy with the ball with his best figures 3 for 20 off 6 overs. Graham Pickering – Graham always gave 100% especially on the field. Running here, there and everywhere. He showed great improvement this year scoring consistently in the 20’s and 30’s. His top score was 40 against Workers Red.

Rodney Davison – Rod also showed great improvement from last season. Rod was also one of our all-rounders. Being successful with the ball with his best figures were 3 for 13 off 7 overs against Workers Red. His top score was 21 runs against Goonellabah.

Danny Parsons – Dan (myself, I, Skip, Skipper) enjoyed being the captain of our team again. It’s always handy being captain as you can bowl to the tailenders to make your figures look good. Best bowling figures were 4 for 26 off 6 overs against Brothers Gold. Top score was 41 against East.

A huge thank you to Michael Scutt, Jayden Scutt, Nathan Stewart, Tyson Pickering, Lachlan Martin and Troy Williams who helped out and filled in throughout the season. 2nd Grade Blue Batting Name Innings N.O. The final result saw a bunch of old blokes who were really enthusiastic about playing cricket, albeit generally poorly, babysitting a group of young blokes that varied between being occasionally brilliant to completely useless! In fairness though I believe the team achieved exactly what it set out to do. Generally there was reasonably competitive cricket with different players standing up at different times to do the job for the team. We stumbled into both the T20 and 1 day finals by default and did play excellent cricket in the GF to become Major Premiers!!

Andrew Maslen – ‘Stop asking me questions!’ Highlight: Completely outplaying Lachlan in all but three games. Lowlight: Receiving a mid- wicket apology from Macca on the way to being run out for a duck in the SF when the team was 3/30ish! Future directions: Likely to damage a heartilage while turning a 3 into a slow single.

Brendan Moloney – ‘Bubble wrap.’ Highlight: Completing the Samson challenge unscathed. Lowlight: Numerous self-inflicted injuries while completing housework on the morning of a match. Not sure if he was trying to get out of the housework or cricket!? Future directions: Succumbing to a back injury while throwing the kitchen sink at a short, wide one down leg side!

Scott McDonald – ‘Dodds’ biatch!’ Highlight: His one (wicket-taking) over of the normal season (under the direction of a very poor captain)! Lowlight: Being dismissed by Steven Dodd and Tammy Lees two weeks in a row. Future directions: Books himself into therapy to recover from Dicko’s taunting re Dodd’s dismissal.

Kye Hughes – ‘Stop bowling down leg side.’ Highlight: Really consistent glove work throughout the season. Committed to the team enough to bat absolutely anywhere he was asked and in any situation! Lowlight: When his old man wouldn’t back up for a single in the SF! (Watch your back Jase)! Future directions: Grows three feet and puts on 60kg in the next few years to displace ‘Old-man Collings’ behind the stumps in Hooker league.

Andrew McFadden – ‘Watto.’ Highlight: Proving his strength by putting a decent ding in his car after getting a send-off! Lowlight: That bloody hamstring! Future directions: In a modern medical miracle his artificial hamstring propels him into contention for the 2017 Ashes tour.

Frank John-Leader – ‘I didn’t knick it!’ Highlight: Convincing a number of umpires that he wasn’t dismissed by pointing to an assortment of equipment or body parts while the opposition was appealing. Lowlight: The run outs or near run outs – he’s the silent assassin when running between the wickets! Future directions: After completing his umpiring ticket Frank becomes the next Bill Dodd of Lismore umpires – the finger is up before the bowler begins to appeal! Jason Hughes – ‘Scissors’ Highlight: Taking two catches against Norths late in the season (finally)! Lowlight: Dropping the third and easiest one against Norths (one of dozens throughout the year)! Future directions: Bionic hands improve his catching so much that he achieves a 50% success rate in season 2019/20!

Greg Healy – ‘I hate being called Healsy!’ Highlight: After a late start in the side finding his niche as an express, tearaway opening bowler. Lowlight: Every freakin’ dropped catch throughout the year! He just couldn’t hide his disappointment in who had put the latest one down! Future directions: Healsy goes into the witness protection program to allow for a new nickname.

Andrew Dixon – ‘Dandruff.’ Highlight: The one occasion throughout the season when he scored more runs than his son. Lowlight: Simply put, there is not enough space!! Future directions: After an Advanced Hair (Yeah-Yeah) transplant he channels his inner Warnie and finally makes a positive contribution on a cricket field!

Josh Healy – ‘Carn get it in Josh!’ Highlight: Mixing it with the big boys! Or should I say old boys! He bowled with some pace and a little bit of a nasty streak at times – unless he didn’t mean those short ones!? Lowlight: Having his old man yell at him to chase, field and throw faster! Future directions: Secures an opening bowling and top three batting place to be the club’s elite all-rounder!

Lachlan Maslen – ‘I don’t want to bowl anymore!’ Highlight: For a guy that scored an aggregate of 13 runs he’ll quickly chirp on about two games!! Lowlight: His loss of control at times – taking wickets for fun one game and hitting square leg every ball bowled the next! Future directions: Grows into ‘the finisher’ with the ball, begging his captain to let him bowl the last over or when the final wicket is needed!

Jamie Walsh – ‘McLovin’ Highlight: Remaining at square leg for two consecutive balls when fielding. Lowlight: Not knowing where square leg is……… Future directions: Becomes the specialist fielding coach of the Australian blind cricket team.

This would pretty much sum up our season. There were quite a few games where we were in a position to win, but would just fall short. Our bowling could be OK at times, and ordinary at others and our batting – we would get some good starts, but we loved a good old fashioned collapse. At the end of the season our poor pre-Christmas form ended up biting us as we just missed out on snagging 4th spot (and I don’t think Norths would have championed a disqualification to get us into the GF) Overall we had a really great bunch of blokes with many father/son combinations getting the opportunity to play together. It’s true, cricket is a fickle mistress, but we can be reassured by the fact that there’s always next year!

James “Can I keep after drinks?” Durheim – debuted in Fourthies with a 50 against the best side in the comp, and was capable of scoring quickly when he didn’t find a way to get himself out. Took delight in stirring his old man when a catch went down or a misfield took place. Showed he had quite the barbed tongue in many an exchange with Quinny

Tony “Retards or F…wits” Durheim – was talked into playing after coming and watching his young bloke. Made batting look easy at times scoring three scores over fifty including 75 not out in a T20 demolition of Norths. Didn’t seem to have as much luck with his hands, shelling as many as he caught, and at times making his captain wish he had the “safe hands” of Jason Hughes back in the side.

Simon “I called him a cheating C… too” Morrison – Soy had a disjointed season due to a back injury, a suspension and a rib complaint. When he was playing though he was always on hand to yell out useful advice to his team mates when they dropped a catch ($2), missed a ball (Good work Sydney!) or got smashed to the boundary (I think he likes them there). Batting highlight would be putting 91 on for the first wicket with Tony against the old enemy Workers.

Matt “Anyone want to buy some pads?” Wilson – Brains was another hampered by injury this season with a bung knee keeping him out of a lot of the later games. Looked certain for a ton first round at the little ground at Evans Head scoring a rapid 64 when we were chasing 250 odd. Was convinced that the new pads he purchased part way through the season had made him lose his batting mojo.

Sam “Tiger” McRae – Sammy started up in thirds, but re-joined us through the season when golf wasn’t on. Didn’t have much luck with the bat, though scored a nice 30 against Workers in a T20. Didn’t get much of a go with the ball, but could keep wicket if needed and took some nice catches in the field.

Blake “Run out specialist” Davis – was one of our late season regular fill ins. Never had much luck with the bat, but definitely showed promise. It was in the field that he made the most impact – contributing to some great run outs – leaving the older opposition players shaking their heads as to what had just happened.

Andrew “Just not seeing them” Scott – Scotty had a lean year with the bat by his own standards and even when he dropped down the order he did not seem to have much luck. He made a few starts, but never gained any consistent form. Actually was allowed to bowl more than one over this season and was denied a hat trick opportunity after taking the final two wickets of the innings against Evans at Rec 10. Jack “Play straight!” Everingham – one of our less experienced juniors, playing only his second season of cricket he made the big step to play seniors as well. Showed enough flashes with both bat and ball at times to indicate he is taking after his old man’s all-rounder role. Would look good with the bat at times and then decide to have a heave-ho across the line – with predictably disastrous results.

Charles “Donny” Mitchell – Charlie was one of our most enthusiastic juniors, and always had his mind working on the game. Didn’t care where he got a game in seniors, happy to fill in for thirds or fourthies. Batting highlight was 33 not out vs Norths when all else fell around him. Also showed some potential with the ball with some nice slowling.

Chris “Facebook” Quinn – what can be said about the mighty Quinn that hasn’t been said before? For brevity I will list my highlights – back to back ducks in our T20 double header Saturday, or when he turned blind and run himself out by half a pitch going for two v Goonellabah. He would probably say his 58 n.o. vs Evans in the first round, or maybe becoming Facebook friends with his new team mates.

Darryl “I thought you guys were gay?” Rose – The pie man returned midway through the season and was once again soon in top form with bat, ball and verbally. The last half dozen games he came into his own with the bat clubbing 61 not out against Workers, and dining out with 5 for 6 against an understrength Norths White. Was most entertaining in the field, and had opposition players wondering what he was on…generally it was lack of sleep after a late night of poker.

Mark “You know my name!” Davis – was one of our bits and pieces players, would bat or bowl anywhere for the good of the team. Batting highlight would have been his quick fire 42 against Evans that kept our season alive. Lowlight was an altercation with ‘Jesus’ in a spiteful encounter at McKenzie, though showed his true sportsmanlike approach walking against the other Norths side when their keeper claimed a catch that he had grassed.

Peter ‘’your thigh isn’t above your waist” Everingham – Pete came out of retirement to join his young bloke playing fourths and immediately fitted in. Was capable all around – scoring 109 not out against Norths, and taking 5 for against Workers. Though his biggest asset for his Captain was his ability wrangling juniors to fill in at short notice.

Luke “Line and length” Davis – became one of our opening bowlers by the end of the season, getting some nice movement with the new pill. I’m sure he will be back bigger and better next year which will allow him to increase his pace. Bowling highlight was 5 for 10 vs Evans Head in a T20 at South Lismore.

Peter “Raucous” Wallace – dropped back from Thirds for the latter part of the season, Pete could be relied upon when thrown the ball, to keep it tight and chip in with wickets. His batting was a little sketchier, though he did manage to get off the mark on each occasion. Helped us out with a great ring-in when we were struggling for numbers at Evans Head.

Glen “I’m retired” Lees – the most important player in the team – the one who brought the esky! Was required to bat five too many times this season.

Thanks to Mitch Beardow, Max Pitman, Jim Pearson, Kenny “Fanny” Fenemore and Jase Matthews for filling the gaps through the season.

Commiserations to Brendan Coffey, Greg Healy, Josh Healy, Brendon Moloney, Jason Hughes and Kye Hughes for going up the grades. 4th Grade Batting Name Innings N.O.
