We stayed at the Travelodge opposite the Plaza which is a 4 minute walk away. It was very pleasant and affordable and only a 5 minute walk from the station. More details on pages 20-21. Ted, the Manager of The Plaza, gave us a complete tour including Ken Dodds’ dressing room, the 1940s tearooms and the projectionist’s room – it was like stepping back in time! We hope to project our films from the original 35mm or 16mm. We also saw the Compton organ and booked it to play before the main feature. We also had a hunt through the Pathé news reels available to us to project and we’ve measured up for a large number of stall holders who will be at the back of the Stalls. By Giselle Jakobs A family man who ran afoul of the Nazis, Josef Jakobs was ill-prepared for an espionage mis- sion to England. Captured by the Home Guard after breaking his ankle, Josef was interrogated at Camp 020, before being prosecuted under the Treachery Act 1940 and executed on 15 August 1941. An open and shut case? MI5’s files suggest otherwise. Faced with the threat of a German invasion in 1940/41, MI5 used promises and threats to break enemy agents, extract intelligence and turn some into double agents, challenging the validity of the ‘volun- HIGH QUALITY tary’ confessions used to prosecute captured spies. But, more than that – was Josef set up to DURABLE HARDBACK fail? Was he a sacrifice to test the double-cross LIMITED EDITION system? The Spy in the Tower tells the untold BOOK story of one of Nazi Germany’s failed agents, and calls into question the legitimacy of Brit- ain’s wartime espionage trials and the success of BOOK OFFER its double-cross system. This intriguing drama is based on the true story of the Portland spy ring – a Soviet operation active in southern England from the late 1950s until January 1961 when the core members were arrested. Produced in 1964 with the title Shadow of Treason, it is pre- sented here in a brand-new digital transfer. Ring of Spies charts a duel between Soviet intelligence and British counter-espionage, and a trade in deadly secrets directed from a bungalow in suburban Ruislip, hidden for years from unsuspecting neighbours and Brit- ish spycatchers. William Sylvester is a smooth charmer as the Russian spy Konon T. Molody. Bernard Lee gives a fine performance as the alcoholic Henry Houghton who steals files from the safe at the Portland Naval Estab- lishment. BAFTA winning actors Margaret Tyzack and David Kossoff give accomplished performances in this gritty, unglamorous Cold War thriller. 5 BOOK OFFER – RECOMMENDED READS FOR THIS MONTH! 9 Spotlight on Leo McKern March 16 1920 – July 23 2002 Leo McKern can be seen in RUMPOLE OF THE BAILEY on Talking Pictures TV, beginning Monday 20th May at 2pm, then each weekday at 2pm. Reginald McKern was born on 16 March 1920 to Norman and Vera McKern in New South Wales, Australia. He left school at 15 to join his father and brothers at a refrigerator facto- ry. While working there a piece of metal hit him in the left eye. Gradually the sight deteriorated and eventually he had to have the eye removed. With the intricate work of engineering no longer an option, he bought a boat with compensation he received for his eye. He retrained as a commercial artist and also served in the Royal Australian Engineers. He performed in his first stage role in Sydney, in 1944 and around this time he fell in love with Australian actress Jane Holland, who then moved to England for work. McKern moved to the to be with her and decided to try his hand as a character actor in London. They were married in 1946 and had two daughters, Abigail and Harriet. Eventually McKern became a regular player at in London and Stratford- Upon-Avon, after a spell in repertory in Bangor and touring with the Arts Council in Wales. As well as his stage achievements, he played many film roles in a variety of British films, in- cluding Murder in the Cathedral (1952); X-The Unknown (1956) Time Without Pity (1957), The Mouse That Roared (1958), The Day the Earth Caught Fire (1961), Doctor in Distress (1963), (1964), Help! (1965) and A Man for All Seasons (1966). A radio play that he had written also become a film,Chain of Events (1958). Television also welcomed him; since a 1955 appearance in The Adventures of Robin Hood, he had performed in many plays and television series. He won critical acclaim for his role as The Duchess in ’s television adaptation of Alice in Wonderland in 1966 and he also played Number Two in cult favourite The Prisoner in 1967. However McKern found filming stressful and suffered a nervous breakdown. He later revealed that he had become stressed with stage fright and nerves. In 1975 he appeared in a BBC television , in a role that would raise him from his safety net of character acting. Rumpole of the Bailey was so popular that the char- acter was revived by ITV, for a long and successful run of 44 episodes from 1978 to 1992. His daughter Abigail also appeared in later episodes. Although he appreciated the fame that Rumpole gave him, he was concerned that people would only remember him for that role and not any of the others he had performed on the stage, screen as well as his radio plays. At heart he was still a jobbing character actor. Throughout the Rumpole years, he continued to appear on stage – including a return to Australia – and in films as diverse asRyan’s Daughter (1970), The Adventures of Sher- lock Holmes Smarter Brother (1975), The Omen (1976), Damien: Omen 2 (1978), The Blue Lagoon (1980) and Travelling North (1987). He also dabbled in commercial adverts and in 1983 was awarded the Order of Australia for his services to the performing arts. His stage fright and nerves worsened as he got older and after his last film role in The Story of Father Damien (1999) his health began to fail. He had become deaf in one ear and also had diabetes. In 2002 he moved into a nursing home in Bath and sadly died several weeks later on 23 July 2002, aged 82. He was cremated at Haycombe Cemetery in Bath.

Running Time: 81 mins approx; Format: 4×3 A melodrama with a spiritual edge, made as a result of the massive loss of life in the Second World War. Olwen Trevelyan, a young composer and pianist, troubled and sleepless over her inability to finish the final notes of her composition, falls to her death from the cliffs of Cornwall. As the years pass, Olwen’s sister Julia obsessively keeps her memory alive. The young composer gains posthumous fame because of her tragic death and the haunting, unfinished composition, “The Dream of Olwen.” 25 years later, still mourning the death of her composer sister, Julia believes she has returned, reincarnated, in an amnesiac woman who chances upon her house seeking help… A haunting film with the beautiful, atmospheric piece of music The Dream of Olwen playing as a background theme throughout, it hit a nerve with 1947 audiences who still hoped their war dead might return.

Norman Jewison directs one of Holly- wood’s most famous screen teams, Doris Day and Rock Hudson as a perky house- wife and her hypochondriac husband in this, their third and final film together. Hudson is hilarious as an obsessed hypochondriac who mistakenly overhears his doctor discussing the impending death of a patient. Believing the poor victim is himself, Hudson elicits the help of his friend and neighbour, Tony Randall, to find a new husband for his soon-to-be- widowed wife. Randall, unfortunately, isn’t much help as he deals with his upcoming loss by swig- ging martinis. Alarmed by her husband’s increasingly strange behaviour, Day becomes even more frustrated when an old paramour (Clint Walker) shows up at their country club and Hudson encourages his attentions towards her! Send Me No Flowers also features Paul Lynde as a side-splitting cemetery plot salesman who ‘loves people’. Hal March and Burt Bacharach’s title tune is sung by Miss Day, and her costumes, including her sexy boudoir wardrobe, were designed by Jean Louis.

Run Time: 96 minutes; 1 disc. 22 Spotlight on Doris Day April 3 1922 – 13th May 2019 We were all very sad to learn that the legendary actress and singer Doris Day died recently at the age of 97. Her singing ca- reer included timeless classics like Whip Crack Away, Qué Será Será, Secret Love and will be remembered for years to come. Doris Mary Ann von Kappelhoff was born in Cincinnati, Ohio in April 1922. She attended dance classes from an ear- ly age and performed regularly with her dance partner, Jerry Doherty, winning many prizes at local pageants. They made plans to try their luck in Hollywood but, the night before they were due to depart, her car was hit by a train, resulting in a broken leg, which ruined her chances of a dancing career. She found solace in the radio while recovering, singing along with the music, particularly Ella Fitzgerald. Bandleader Barney Rapp suggested a name change. A favourite of hers was called Day by Day and Doris Day was born! Her breakthrough hit, Sentimental Journey, came in 1945; by the following year she was one of the highest paid female vocalists in the world. A Warner Brothers film contract followed and a stream of hit films, includingRomance on the High Seas (1948), Tea For Two (1950), On Moonlight Bay (1951) and By the Light of the Silvery Moon (1953). In 1952, she formed her own production company and scored a hit film with the musical Calamity Jane (1952). She surprised the critics in Love Me or Leave Me (1955), a fictional account of the life of night- club singer Ruth Etting and in Alfred Hitchcock’s The Man Who Knew Too Much (1956). Her biggest hit was Pillow Talk (1959), where her on-screen partnership with Rock Hudson earned her an Academy Award nomination for Best Actress. She remained friends with Hudson for the rest of his life. Her private life sadly did not mirror her on-screen romances. Her first husband, musician Al Jorden, was physically abusive to her. Her second marriage to actor George Weilder, lasted only eight months. After the death of her third husband, Martin Melcher in 1968, she discovered she was bankrupt – he had squandered her fortune. Despite being ex- hausted from her contract commitments, she began filmingThe Doris Day Show, for tele- vision; a huge success, it ran until 1973. Doris Day was passionate about animal welfare and founded Actors & Others for Ani- mals in 1971. Following her retirement she ran the Doris Day Animal League at her home in Carmel, California, filling her house with stray animals rescued from the streets She married for the final time in 1976 to a waiter Barry Comden, but the union ended in 1981 and they were divorced the following year. Doris repeatedly turned down a lifetime achievement Oscar but she accept the Presi- dential Medal of Freedom from President George W Bush in 2004 for her work as an enter- tainer and her commitment to animal welfare. Sadly, in the same year, her only child Terry (from her first marriage), a songwriter and producer, died of melanoma. Her 29th studio album, My Heart, reached the UK Top 10 in September 2011. Although active in choosing which films, adverts and TV shows were licenced to play her hits, she would not be lured out of retirement. The legendary Doris Day, who turned down the roles of Maria in The Sound of Music and Mrs Robinson in The Graduate, died on 13 May 2019 of pneumonia. Her legacy of films and songs ensure that Doris Day will never be forgotten. 23 shadows The Complete Series 3 DISC BOX SET OUR PRICE £15 with FREE UK POSTAGE Call Us Now On Freephone 0808 178 8212 Shadows will commence on Monday 3rd June at 17.00 and continue at the same time every week day on TALKING PICTURES TV ON SKY 328 FREEVIEW 81 YOUVIEW 81 FREESAT 306 VIRGIN 445.
