Freeview 81 Film Club Sky 328 MAY newsletter Freesat 306 JUNE 2019 Virgin 445 Dear Supporters of Talking Pictures TV & Renown Pictures, This month we release our first Talking Pictures With… DVD – a 3 disc box set packed with interviews from stars we all know and love. It includes the full interview with dear Liz Fraser who we greatly miss and of course the Remembering interviews with the family of John Gregson and the son of Sam Kydd – Jonathan Kydd. Just £20 for the entire collection and as many of you have asked us to put these interviews on disc to be enjoyed at home (with no advert breaks!), I do hope it will be well received. It’s a chance for those of you who can’t attend our festivals to see the on-stage interviews. Talking of festivals – we visited the beautiful Stockport Plaza again last week. It really is a sight to behold, see the images above and on the right. We are down to our last few tickets so please do get yours quick to avoid disappointment. We stayed at the Travelodge opposite the Plaza which is a 4 minute walk away. It was very pleasant and affordable and only a 5 minute walk from the station. More details on pages 20-21. Ted, the Manager of The Plaza, gave us a complete tour including Ken Dodds’ dressing room, the 1940s tearooms and the projectionist’s room – it was like stepping back in time! We hope to project our films from the original 35mm or 16mm. We also saw the Compton organ and booked it to play before the main feature. We also had a hunt through the Pathé news reels available to us to project and we’ve measured up for a large number of stall holders who will be at the back of the Stalls. For those who may have disabilities there is a blue badge parking bay at the front of the cinema, lift to the second floor and ramps inside. Sunday 6th October folks – we can’t wait to meet you all! Some Freeview viewers among you may have experienced some disruption to Talking Pictures TV due to the Freeview transmitter changes – if you need any technical help and support please call the free helpline set up by Freeview and Digital UK on 0808 100 0288. They have a whole team waiting to help you. There are some ‘reel’ delights on the channel over the next few weeks! Also the unmissable The Go Between with Julie Christie and Alan Bates and many more – see pages 26-27 for a full list. We’ll Meet Again with Vera Lynn will show on Thursday 6th June at 18:30 in tribute to the 75th anniversary of D-Day. Also more films with subtitles – do see the list on page 25. Some excellent offers for you this month, with a crime and spy theme running through this issue. All still with FREE UK POSTAGE. Highlights will include an exclusive interview with Stanley’s son Glyn, plus the première of a new film: Just William’s Luck (1948) and a selection of films in which he featured. I had a great dialogue via email with Jim Dale last week; he was so excited to see we are airing Georgy Girl at the moment – you may not know, he wrote the song! He lives in the USA now but gets lots of emails from fans of Talking Pictures TV. We hope to be able to interview Jim when he’s next in the country. Finally, the sad news…”Set ‘Em Up Joe” so we can all raise a glass to the life of dear Doris Day, a great loss, but what a life! We have a tribute to her on page 23. Keep on spreading the word and enjoying the films, hope you find something of interest over the following pages. Until next month ... The Spy in the Tower The Untold Story of Joseph Jakobs, the Last Person to be Executed in the Tower of London By Giselle Jakobs A family man who ran afoul of the Nazis, Josef Jakobs was ill-prepared for an espionage mis- sion to England. Captured by the Home Guard after breaking his ankle, Josef was interrogated at Camp 020, before being prosecuted under the Treachery Act 1940 and executed on 15 August 1941. An open and shut case? MI5’s files suggest otherwise. Faced with the threat of a German invasion in 1940/41, MI5 used promises and threats to break enemy agents, extract intelligence and turn some into double agents, challenging the validity of the ‘volun- HIGH QUALITY tary’ confessions used to prosecute captured spies.
