THROUGH OUR EYES 2012, “20/20 Perfect Vision,” which has been on display at the Ritz Theatre and Museum since December 13, 2012, closed on July 31after an extended engagement. Celebrating 20 years, the exhibit of new works by African-American artists is the longest running show of its kind in Jacksonville. Through Our Eyes 2012 featured twenty artists: Yuwnus Asami, Rhonda Bristol, Glendia Cooper, Keith Doles, Overstreet Ducasse, Annelies Dykgraaf, Charles Eady, Blue Franswa, Marsha Hatcher, Etta Haygood, Jhory Jones, Traci Mims-Jones, Gil Mayers, Suzanne Pickett, Adrian Rhodes, Tiffany Rodriguez, Laurence Walden, Roo- sevelt Watson, III, Olice Williams, and Daniel Wynn. To mark the occasion, a closing celebration, “Through Our Eyes: Creative Spectrum,” was held in the gallery on July 26. The event recognized the visual artists featured in the 2012 exhibit. The arts advocacy group, A Day in LaVilla, presented performing arts genres, such as spoken word and musical expressions. A lively crowd of friends and supporters came out for the closing celebration. Through Our Eyes was conceived and has been curated since 1993 by Lydia P. Stewart, who was a public affairs producer at PBS station WJCT, where the exhibit was first presented in celebration of Black History Month. The program moved to the Ritz, along with Stewart, after she accepted the position of Museum Administrator in 1999. The program expanded to include gallery talks, art classes, and collaborations with poets and musicians. To date, about 75 artists have participated in the show. Lydia is excited about the growing community of new and younger artists who have become involved in the creative destiny of the Ritz Theatre and Museum. For more information about events at the Ritz, visit their website at www.ritzjacksonville.com or call (904) 632-5555.

600 Year Record Broken: HAITI CELEBRATES CARNIVAL DE FLUERS Youngest Person To Pass UK Bar Planning To Practice In Bahamas

When Gabrielle Turnquest was the youngest person to earn an undergraduate degree in psychology from Liberty University in Virginia she was 16. Two years later, she’s achieved another feat - she is the youngest person the called to the Bar of England and Wales after passing her exams. She is now qualified to practice in The Commonwealth of The Bahamas where her parents are from. Turnquest was born in Florida. Success at a young age is nothing new to the family. Her sister Kandi passed the Bar at 22. According to the UK Telegraph, the average lawyer undertakes the Bar Professional Training Course when they are 27. “I am honoured to be the youngest person to pass the Bar exams but, really, I was not aware at the time what the average age was,” she said. “I didn’t fully realise the impact of it.” Her next goal? She plans to take the Florida Bar. Turnquest aspires to be a fashion law specialist.
