Later this year, we celebrate the 50th anni- versary of the keel-laying of the Sunward, the vessel that started the era of the modern cruise industry in 1966. Over the years, we have seen an incredible improvement in what cruise ships can offer passengers. The vessels are becoming more and more advanced as regards both maritime technology and passenger experience. The cruise industry is often seen as leading when it comes to implementing new technology and to be con- stantly striving to find better solutions.

With our new arrival, we have again set the focus on measures aimed at environmental protection. Just like our other new- builds, the features of this ship include outstanding energy-effi ciency and a comprehen- sive system of exhaust gas treatment. To date we are the only cruise company in the world to have consciously decided to not simply operate these exhaust gas treatment systems inside the special emission control areas according to the regulations. As we believe environmental protection is not subject to geographical borders, we deploy the systems on a continuous basis, worldwide and around the clock. In addition to this, we pursued our concept of continuous improvement in environmen- tal protection through numerous activities throughout the reporting year.

PUBLISHER’S DETAILS AND CREDITS 3 EDITORIAL Ladies and Gentlemen, When I took over as Chairwoman of the Management Board of TUI Cruises in October 2014, the topic of environmental protection was at the very top of my agenda. I quickly noticed how soundly the efforts towards sustainability and a careful approach in dealing with the environment are established within the company. This provides the best possible conditions for jointly pursuing the adopted course and officially declaring our ambitious objective at the beginning of this year to operate the world’s lowest-emission fleet of cruise liners. Crucial milestones on our way to this objective are our two newbuild vessels Mein Schiff 3 and Mein Schiff 4, which was christened in Kiel at the beginning of June. In both vessels, maximum energy efficiency as the guiding principle for design, engineering and construction have brought about impressive results.

  • Cruise Ship Locations 4 July 2021
CRUISE SHIP LOCATIONS 4 JULY 2021 Compiled by Mike Pryce, Wellington NZ (Information believed correct at this date. Compiled from various sources and internet AIS, especially www.cruisemapper.com. Excludes ferries and cruise ferries. Many cruise ships have been in “warm” lay-up, when they have periodically moved from their berths or anchorages and gone for short voyages locally to give their engines and equipment “a run”, and including production of freshwater, before returning to lay-up. Ships at anchor periodically need to berth to take onboard fuel, food, provisions and other supplies. Some inter-ship crew transfers at sea are being made, outside port limits. Many cruise ships have been in lay-up for over a year, as the initial “pause” has been continually extended due to more Covid-19 outbreaks, and many financial assumptions made on the expectation of an initial two-months lockdown needed reviewing. This has resulted in many recent sales of older ships, and limited cruising in the Mediterranean and Europe, where these areas are being affected by sporadic outbreaks in Covid-19 infections. The largest concentration of laid-up cruise ships is on the Bahamas Banks (east of Miami and south of Freeport) A large number of cruise ships are anchored off the south coast of England, west of Southampton. Another large group are anchored in the South China Sea, NE of Singapore. With the northern summer approaching, many cruise ships have started short cruises, or “cruises to nowhere” in Europe, North America and Caribbean, with few or no port calls, encouraged by Covid-19 vaccinations.

After all, we are looking back on an eventful 2019. We wanted to report what significance the Fridays for Future movement and the subsequent broad social debate it has triggered about climate protection and reducing CO₂ has for us as a cruise company. We wanted to tell you about our new Environmental Advisory Board, which advises us on these issues. And we wanted to write about the long-term TUI Cruises goal of offering climate-neutral and emission-free cruises. But now the world has been turned upside down. In March, we had to announce that we would temporarily suspend our cruise operations. The world has come to a stop, triggered by the rapid spread of the coronavirus pandemic. Almost our entire social life and large parts of the global economic and service sectors are at a standstill. In March, we brought 18,000 guests home at short notice, safe and sound. Part of our crew is still aboard our vessels, and both ashore and on board we are now preparing with all our strength to resume regular operations. And then the issue of environmental protection will play a key role again – after all, it is firmly anchored in our corporate strategy. An important milestone this year will be the development of a new environmental and climate strategy applicable until 2030.
