Jeff Andretti # 21 JEFF ANDRETTI INDY CAR DRIVER ► INTERSTATE BATTERIES # 21 INDYCAR DRIVER PROFILE There'll Be No Looking Back For Jeff Andretti May 06, 1993|by PAUL REINHARD, The Morning Call Jeff Andretti won't be looking back when practice for the Indianapolis 500 opens this weekend because he's got too much reason to be looking ahead. The 29-year-old youngest of the racing Andretti clan wound up in the hospital after the 1992 Indianapolis 500 with injuries that some people said would bring an early end to his racing career. But Andretti fought his way back faster than even the optimists ever thought possible. By February, he was back behind the wheel of a race car, and he goes into the preparation stage of the most prestigious race in the world with a car that has gone faster than any he's ever driven. Pagan Racing was a racing team owned by Texas businessmen Jack and Allan Pagan. The team was founded in 1993 when the team purchased the CART IndyCar equipment of Kenny Bernstein’s King Racing. The team fielded a car for Jeff Andretti for the 1993 Indianapolis 500 who finished 29th after a crash. Christian busi- ness principles are part of Interstate’s corporate culture. Interstate maintains a full-time Chaplain, and proudly maintains evan- gelical Christian values within its spiritual core. "Burdened with man’s inhumanity to man", Interstate Batteries Chairman Norm Miller created a commercial to promote God’s love. The commercial, which airs on Dish Network, shows the positive change in the lives of several animated characters when touched by "God’s love". Interstate Batteries' corporate mission statement is: "To glorify God as we supply our customers worldwide with top quality, value-priced batteries, related electrical power-source products, and distribution services." According to Interstate's website, Chairman Norm Miller "is also a believer in God’s power to change lives, because it was that power that turned his own life around after years of drinking..." • Racing Families – the Andrettis Hello and Welcome to a Brand New Episode in the Racing Families Mini-Series from Sidepodcast
Racing Families – The Andrettis Hello and welcome to a brand new episode in the Racing Families mini-series from Sidepodcast. As you may expect we’re looking at the great and the good from the world of motorsport, but particularly those that are keeping it in the family. Today, it’s time for a sprawling family legacy, and the name? Andretti. You’ve probably heard of Mario Andretti. He’s tried his hand at pretty much every type of racing there is on four wheels, and been largely successful too. The 73 year old American is now, naturally, retired, but in his sporting career he added to a long list of titles, and broke far too many records to mention. Mario was F1 World Champion in 1978, driving for Team Lotus, having joined the sport ten years earlier. Before that, in 1969, he won the Indy 500, which he continued to participate in for 29 years altogether. After his F1 stint, with a little bit of a crossover, he appeared in the CART series, winning that championship in 1984. He’s also tried his hand at NASCAR and the Le Mans 24 Hour race, with his best finish an overall second place. With this kind of DNA, it’s hardly surprising that the Andretti family are one of the more extensive in racing. Mario Andretti has a twin brother called Aldo, and in their very early days of racing, they built up a stock car together and took turns behind the wheel. They continued racing for about ten years, between 1959 and 69, but after two serious accidents, Aldo gave it up.

Serendipity is waking to capture a 747 sunrise, or shooting Ludvig Bjørnstad’s fireball from the start line with a hand-held 50mm Olympus! However I’ve got nothing on that found by Harlan Thompson, the lone gun legend of my 1980 Hot Gossip scoop. He’d been making a good living for some years as a gun for hire on the East Coast’s lucrative Fuel Coupe match race circuit when a serendipitous meeting with Swedish racer Knut Söderquist saw them teaming up and putting together Tre Kronor to race over here ... "My first time down the quarter mile in Europe they put me into the guard rail, they took the fender off the car,” Harlan told me, adding with a chuckle, “I thought, boy they sure play rough over here!” LLeeggeennddss eeddiiittiiioonn wwoorrrddsss & & p phhootttoosss mmiiikkee c ccoolllllliiinnsss That meeting took place at Harlan’s long-time parts store, the famed Central Jersey Speed & Machine, and in July 1980 they drove into Santa Pod in a beat-up Mercedes, Harlan suggesting that with shot suspension it made them look like down-and-outs! Tre Kronor (three crowns in Swedish), was naked to the elements on an open trailer, its stunning Bob Gerdes’ paint job gleaming in the sun for all to see. Harlan first pass was indeed memorable - Houndog got outta shape, changing lanes and hit Tre Kronor, but with no major damage. Harlan was happy and impressed when Bob Phelps “took the body and fixed it for us while we set the car up for the next pass." They qualified fifth, losing to the pole sitter, British racing legend Bootsie Herridge’s new Gladiator
