The Loyalist Fall 2015 Volume 28

The 2015 Annual Report from the Alumni Association President

Dear Alumni and Friends,

One of the hardest things to accept is change. There is a comfort in things remaining constant. It grounds us. It allows us to function in the space of familiarity. And, in some cases, gives us the false sense of security that we are not changing!

I go back to Royal Avenue quite often and feel that sense of comfort. Some teachers from my years at McDevitt still remain. Burnie still sweeps the floors. The tan lockers line the halls – with those top lockers STILL remaining ajar!

But, like anything, there is also change. Class size is smaller – nowhere close to the 370+ students that were in my graduating class of 1985. There is a “school within a school” with the addition of Our Lady of Confidence several years ago. Distance learning labs now occupy classrooms. The student body is a model of diversity – with all interacting in a spirit of cooperation.

What hasn’t changed is the quality of graduate that McDevitt is producing. This year the graduating class of 2015 was awarded over $11 million in scholarships and grants to colleges and universities. The McDevitt Robotics team advanced to the National Championships in St. Louis. Robert Zigmund ’16 advanced to the Forensics World Championships in Florida. Our Royal Lancers continue to shine!

For the Alumni Association, the 2014-2015 year was also one of change and growth. For the first Contents time, our revenue surpassed $50,000. This allowed us to commit more support to McDevitt students and programs. We added new events to the calendar such as Designer Bag Bingo and Legends of McDevitt 3 upgraded our golf outing to the McDevitt Alumni Golf Classic at Manufacturer’s Golf and Country Reunions & Events 4 Club. And, through the generosity of alumni and friends, we initiated an online fundraising Class Notes 4 challenge that raised over $4,300 for the Robotics team’s expenses at the National Championship. In Loving Memory 5 Alumni Association 5 Look for continued changes coming for 2015-16 – both in new events and changes to existing Student Accomplishments 6 McDevitt Gets “SMART” events. What won’t change is our commitment to Bishop McDevitt and its students. They will 7 Partnership with Healey 7 continue to be the focus of our efforts. Robotics 8 2015 Annual Report 9 All of us recognize the value of the education received at McDevitt. As I said to the Graduating Class of 2015 in my speech welcoming them to the Alumni Association – that little building on Royal Avenue produces some very special people. It is the reason we are called ROYAL Lancers. Come join us and ensure that this legacy of excellence, of royalty, continues.

Maria impende juvamen.

By expanding our Executive Board and adding new and improved events, we were able to bring many alumni and friends back to McDevitt and raise more money for Bishop McDevitt students and programs. The year started with our 2nd annual Wine Tasting held at the end of July. Mike Conti, owner of From Stem to Learn, once again educated his very willing McDevitt “students” on various wines from different regions. In October, the Alumni Association hopped on the bandwagon of the ever popular “Designer Bag Bingo.” Over 250 ladies, and a few brave gentlemen, played some serious, competitive Bingo for the chance to win bags from Michael Kors, Kate Spade, Vera Bradley, and Coach. Designer Bag Bingo will be back at this year on November 6th! Look for ticket sales to start the end of the summer! Our Alumni Association Memorial Mass is a chance for us to remember our fellow McDevitt alums who have passed away. In 2014, we were honored to have long-time McDevitt faculty member, Msgr. Richard Skelly as the celebrant. This year’s Mass will be held on All Saints Day – Sunday, November 1st. In December, we celebrated one of our favorite days – Bishop McDevitt High School’s “Birthday”. Students, faculty and staff were treated to cupcakes at all the lunch periods. The price – a rousing rendition of Happy Birthday sung by the students! Also, a banner recognizing Bishop McDevitt and it graduates was hung across Easton Road during the month of December. We also conducted our annual Christmas Card competition with students designing a Christmas Card based on the theme given by the Alumni Association. The winner received a cash prize and their design was printed on the Christmas cards sent by the Alumni Association. Once again, Jerry Blavat, the Geator with the Heater, will be back at McDevitt on Saturday, April 2, 2016. Our Annual Spring Fling is one of our most popular events of the year and “the Geator” always enjoys his visit to McDevitt! We look forward to seeing all of you “dancing fools” in April – particularly those crazy girls from the Class of ‘70! This year, we rebranded our annual golf outing to the “McDevitt Alumni Golf Classic”. To avoid the bad weather of previous years, it was moved to June and held at the beautiful Manufacturers Golf & Country Club. Thankfully, there were bright, sunny skies and the fun times went from the course into the clubhouse during the cocktail hour and dinner. Whew! I’m tired just reliving the past 12 months! But, I would be remiss if I didn’t share with you my favorite moment of the year. The McDevitt Robotics team holds a special place in the Alumni Association’s collective heart. We have been a supporter of the team since its inception. This year the team moderator, Brendan Burke ’77, told me he had a “good feeling”. And sure enough, during the Mid-Atlantic Championships at Lehigh University, McDevitt’s team was on the bubble to go to the World Championships. There were fingers being crossed and novenas being said. At around 3PM that Saturday, I received the text –the team was going to St. Louis and the World Championships. Now, the hard part– getting them there! The Alumni Association set up the “Meet Me in St. Louis” challenge and pledged to match, dollar for dollar, monies raised for the team. And, our alumni came through! That Monday, I was pleased to present a check to the Robotics team for over $4,000! As I said in my Facebook post that night – it’s the fun part of being President. Later that month, we presented to two of the team members a banner honoring their advancement to the World Championship. It will hang in the auditorium and there is PLENTY of room for us to add future team visits to the World Championship! Yes, the calendar is full and more events are being developed and discussed for the coming year. But, our satisfaction is gained by the support we are able to give to McDevitt students in scholarships as well as funding McDevitt programs such as Robotics and Forensics. We hope to increase our gifts in the future. A special note of thanks to all who help put these events together – our committees and volunteers. And my sincere appreciation to the Alumni Association Executive Board – Redmond McConnell, Kathy Lochner, Kathleen Tyson, Regina Foy, Bob Lounsberry, Kathy Montrey, and Dan Kyle. The Alumni Association is lucky to have such a committed, dedicated and talented group of people who give willingly of their time and talents. Thank you for your support and we look forward to seeing you this year at an Alumni Association event! In Loving Memory... Please remember in your prayers the members of our Bishop McDevitt community who have passed away since our last publication. Notification of death between October 2014 and July 2015. A full list of deceased alumni can be found on the McDevitt website.

6 McDevitt Gets “SMART”

By Angelique Frazier ‘16

In today’s technological era, the classroom experience has been improved for a countless number of students worldwide when compared to the previous decade. For one thing, the presence of the SMART Board has provided an engaging and interactive learning experience. The SMART Board is an interactive whiteboard that promotes collaboration and allows students to have a more modern educational 5 experience. The creator of the SMART Board, Smart Technologies, currently facilitates learning in classrooms across the nation through educators’ use of their innovative tools. Another program that is making its way into classrooms around the country is SMART amp. Winner of the 2015 Bett Award, SMART amp allows students to fill a blank workspace with pictures, videos, text, shapes and other creative visuals to put together a complete project. Through its use at Bishop McDevitt High School, students have been able to create original and captivating projects. This year, Mr. Jeff Moffo’s Accounting, Computer Technology and Criminal Justice classes got the opportunity to utilize the SMART amp technology, as well as Ms. Anne Marie Kolla’s Theology classes. 6 Impressed by Bishop McDevitt’s usage of the SMART amp service, representatives flew in from as near as and as far as in , in order to record McDevitt students in action. Several other students were selected to participate in interviews about their own experience using the workspace tool. James Griffin, the Strategic Engagement Manager for SMART technologies, said in an interview that SMART technologies has a plan in place to work with local leadership, making sure that the right technology 7 options are given in the classrooms. “An adoption...is in place to support that technology introduced to the schools... and superintendents downtown,” Griffin said. The SMART amp cloud-based service was in production for about nine months before its launch in April 2013. Griffin also stated that other schools utilizing the service include Prince George’s county in Maryland (Title I schools), districts in , Canada, city schools in Atlanta, Georgia, as well as the School District of Philadelphia. The technology that will soon be replacing the SMART Boards will be SMART technologies newest innovation: the Interactive Flat Panel. It’s cost-efficient and will be expected to run for about fifteen to twenty years. It also uses fifteen percent of the electrical costs of the projector and is easier to use.

Editors Note: Four McDevitt students and their teacher, Mr. Jeff Moffo were invited by SMART Technologies to present at the ISTE Conference in Philadelphia on June 28, 2015. While at the conference, the students demonstrated how the SMART amp technology can be used as a “creative and innovative way for students to complete assignments.” Mr. Jeff Moffo was quoted in a CNN Money article. 7 Robotics Competes in St. Louis

Adapted from Endrysa Peguero’s ‘17 article from The Royalist The hard work and dedication of this year’s Robotics team soared to new heights. This year, McDevitt’s Robotics team entered numerous competitions with their largest and most advanced robot yet.

In January, the team received a box of parts worth about $5,000, which was enough to build a small robot that could be driven around. However, the goal was for the Robotics team to expand the miniature robot’s capabilities in order to compete in FIRST’s designated challenge. After getting parts from various stores and then adding those parts to the robot back in their workshop, they successfully constructed the Tower of Terror--clearly named for its immense size.

FIRST’s 2015 challenge, called Recycle Rush, involved stacking plastic totes as high as possible, capping them with recycling containers, and finishing it off with a foam pool noodle, called “litter,” or tossing that litter to the other team’s side of the field in order to impede their progress.

By competing in two small events at Chestnut Hill Academy and Upper Darby High School, the team earned enough points to qualify for the District Championship at Lehigh University. After two nights, they then were able to successfully secure a spot for the World Championship in St. Louis--an honor bestowed upon only 20% of all Robotics teams in the nation.

In order to go to St. Louis, the Robotics team had to hold many fundraisers to cover various fees and expenses, including the entry fee, transportation, and hotel rooms. With help from the Alumni Association, coverage from Fox29 News, and a McDevitt fundraiser, the team made the 17 hour trek to St. Louis.

Six hundred teams from around the world competed in St Louis. The teams were divided into eight groups, each with their own playing field. McDevitt’s ability to quickly grab recycle containers made them a desirable pick for the playoffs. The team was chosen as the 2nd pick of the 6th alliance, along with their partners from Connecticut and Brazil. Despite being knocked out of the playoffs in the first round, the team was extremely proud to be one of the few teams selected. In the end, McDevitt’s Robotics team claimed 17th place in the Curie Division, marking them as one of the better teams in the Philadelphia area.

Inspired by the numerous successes of this year, the two dozen current members of the Robotics team have already set new goals for next year. Returning members anxiously await the arrival of new members, underclassmen especially (no experience necessary), in order to pass on their knowledge and benefit McDevitt’s Robotics team for the upcoming year.

The Cardinal Dougherty Legacy Fund was established to continue the proud tradition of CD by helping “our families” and those from the neighborhoods alums have grown up. The Cardinal Dougherty Legacy Fund will be split three ways: 1) 33% of the money goes to students of former CD parishes that are attending McDevitt, 2) 33% of the money goes to the children/grandchildren of CD alumni attending McDevitt, and 3) 33% of the money goes to children/ grandchildren of CD alumni attending any Archdiocesan High School.
