ARTHUR'S BELLE GSB (Vol.22 p.789) was a chestnut filly, with an irregular white face, and a grey patch on her near flank. She was bred by Sir John Barker, who died on 16th December, 1914. The sale of stock, by his Executors, took place on 16th April, 1915, at The Grange, Bishop's Stortford Hertfordshire, and was conducted by Tattersalls. Sometime between August 8th 1921 and Spring 1922 Arthur’s Belle arrived at Foxhams.

NOTES:  Hampton was a small horse, 15.2 hands high. He won races and was a very successful sire.  Hermit won the Derby in 1867 and is probably one of the best known historic names in racing.  Stockwell was a great stallion, sometimes called the “Emperor of Stallions”  Petrarch also won the Ascot Gold Cup in 1877. Bred by the late Sir John Barker, Baronet, of The Grange, Bishop's Stortford, Herts., and entered by him in the, National Pony Society's Supplement of 1914. He was purchased by Mrs J Oscar Muntz and was at Foxhams in 1915.

NOTES:  Stockwell was a great stallion, sometimes called the “Emperor of Stallions”  Birdcatcher (Irish) foaled in 1833 was a good racehorse and in his time a leading sire, one of his foals was the famous Miss Agnes and another was Darling’s Dam 1850. Bircatcher (Irish) by died in March 1860 at the age of 27.

NOTES:  Galicia was a famous mare, dam of many fine winning horses.  Minting was ridden by Fred Archer (famous English jockey). There was much bad feeling between England and France at the time and it was feared a riot would break out if Minting won.  Musket was bred in 1867 by Lord Glasgow and had a very indifferent start to his career, however he was exported to New Zealand where he later excelled as a stallion.

Brassey, of Cottesbroke, Northampton, a first class Tournament Pony, Hurlingham certificate 9608 and formerly owned by Captain Geoffrey Brooke. Bush Girl was at Foxhams in 1915.

Meath “Baron Birdcatcher was not in the stud book, as his dam Lady Longford was not all together thoroughbred. I remember my father saying that he saw Lady Longford race in Trim about 1850 or 1852. She was owned by a farmer names Thomas Russell, of Friar’s Park, Trim, he is dead and all his family are dead. Lady Longford won the race, and was sold after it to a gentleman in Dublin. NOTES:  142 Lady Florence, foaled 1878. A mare registered with The Polo Pony Society.  Rosicrucian was said to be one of the great horses of his time. His name is said to derive from a secret society first heard of in 1614, but according to the dictionary of Beliefs and Religions, no trace of the order has been found.

NOTES:  Canterbury Pilgrim was a very difficult horse, excitable and spiteful but she was a great success at the stud, all her stock fetching high prices.  Saint Simon was foaled in 1881, was considered one of the great horses of his time.  Isinglass won the Ascot Gold Cup in 1895

NOTES:  Pocahontas was the dam of Stockwell and other fine horses. She was unfortunately rumoured to be an “indifferent horse” but there seems to be no proof for this statement.  Pocahontas – The young Indian princess went on to marry John Rolfe, (John Smith’s colleague) and in 1616 went with him to England. She died a year later of small pox.  Wisdom foaled 1873, was a very successful sire.

GLORY was a chestnut mare, fourteen and a half hands high and foaled in 1907. At the Devon County Agricultural Show, held in Plymouth from May 14th to 16th, 1912, in a class for Mares or Geldings, (not exceeding 14.2 hh, suitable for playing polo,) there were sixteen entries, Glory owned by Captain W.E. Davies won third prize. Later Glory was admitted to the Approved Mare Register as the property of Mrs J Oscar Muntz sometime between 1919 and 1921.

Kennedy bought him for £2,000 with the object of sending him to stud in Ireland to revive the Herod sire line, outside of France. His first crop of runners included The Tetrarch, perhaps the fastest horse seen on the British Turf… Herod was a very early stallion said to trace back to the ” In 1928 Roi Herode was the sire of 86 breeding mares.  The Tetrarch was the name given to a Syrian Prince in Roman times.  Saint Simon was foaled in 1881, was considered one of the great horses of his time.
