She was bred by Sir John Barker, who died on 16th December, 1914. The sale of stock, by his Executors, took place on 16th April, 1915, at The Grange, Bishop's Stortford Hertfordshire, and was conducted by Tattersalls. Sometime between August 8th 1921 and Spring 1922 Arthur’s Belle arrived at Foxhams. Bred by the late Sir John Barker, Baronet, of The Grange, Bishop's Stortford, Herts., and entered by him in the, National Pony Society's Supplement of 1914. He was purchased by Mrs J Oscar Muntz and was at Foxhams in 1915. She was owned by a farmer names Thomas Russell, of Friar’s Park, Trim, he is dead and all his family are dead. Lady Longford won the race, and was sold after it to a gentleman in Dublin. When he died in 1894, he was residing in Polar Workhouse in southeast London. Alken’s work, in both oil and watercolour, is strikingly similar to that of his father. It is unclear whether the son was imitating his father, or whether he had simply been taught by him. Alken Jnr. is characterised as having a less developed sense of draughtsmanship but as paying closer attention to detail than his father. His horses are also less angular and more rounded than his father’s animals.

The country’s temperate climate and colonial environment allowed horses to flourish and accordingly became accessible to a wide range of people. Horses acted as an agent of colonisation for their role in shaping the landscape and fostering relationships between coloniser and colonised. Imported horses and the traditions associated with them, served to maintain a cultural link between Great Britain and her colony, a characteristic that continued well into the twentieth century. Not all of these transplanted readily to the colonial frontier and so they were modified to suit the land and its people. There are a number of horses that have meaning to this country. The journey horse, sport horse, work horse, warhorse, wild horse, pony and Māori horse have all contributed to the creation of ideas about community and nationhood.     Duchess Park Bee Orchid on Duchess Park History and Natural History Volume 1 - An Introduction (A work in progress at August 2015) David Cudby Duchess Park History and Natural History – Volume 1 This book is dedicated to all residents and visitors to Duchess Park, present and future, who have an interest in local history, or who are, or might be persuaded to become interested in understanding, loving and conserving the site and its flora and fauna. The views are my own. Why does including local history in this book matter? It matters for two major reasons. First because many people derive a great deal of pleasure from reading about past events and enjoy the perspective that it gives in understanding local custom and practice, previous land ownership and land use. Secondly, for many of us, myself included, knowing something about where our little patch of land fits into previous land ownership and who lived here and used that land gives a sense of place and helps in feeling grounded or at home where we live. It is only by having this sense of place that we can feel the emotion that will motivate us to protect and conserve what we have inherited. Why does conservation matter?
