A Message to All Beach Users
A message to all beach users Boating and swimming only zones The Victorian Government has implemented boating and dedicated swimming only zones adjoining Port Phillips beaches between Sandridge and Elwood. The zones are clearly marked by upgraded navigation markers located on the water and signage on the shore. The changes within this area include: • Swimming only zones in front of Sandridge, Port Melbourne and South Melbourne Life Saving Clubs • Swimming only zone on Middle Park Beach between Wright and Armstrong streets • Swimming only zone for the entire length of St Kilda Beach from St Kilda Pier to Marina Reserve • Revised shared wind sport area within St Kilda Harbour • Boating only zone at St Kilda Marina entrance. Please see the accompanying map. Personal Watercraft (PWC) or jet ski behaviour The Marine Safety Act 2010 (Vic) introduces new responsibilities on both recreational owners and users of PWCs, including: • PWCs and other vessels are not permitted to enter or remain in dedicated swimming only zones. • In other areas, PWCs and other vessels must not exceed five knots (8 kms per hour) within 200 metres of the shore. • PWCs and other vessels must not exceed five knots (8 kms per hour) within 50 metres of swimmers, other vessels and fixed or floating structures. On-the-spot fines are applicable for operators found to be contravening these rules. Hoon boating laws Hoon behaviour is dangerous and may cause someone to get hurt. It can include: • Performing ‘doughnuts’ within 50 metres of swimmers or other water users • Speeding more than five knots (8 kms per hour) within 50 metres of swimmers or within 200 metres of the shore. -

There are two key evaluation questions for fish in coastal Victorian rivers, which were developed in collaboration with CMAs. Initially it was found only in Corio Bay, but during the past fiveyears it has spread so that it now occurs throughout the western half of Port Phillip Bay. • Densities of Sabella in many parts of the bay remain low but densities are usually higher (up to 13/m2 ) in deeper water and they extend into shallower depths in calmer regions. • Sabella larvae probably require a 'hard' surface (shell fragment, rock, seaweed, mollusc or sea squirt) for initial attachment, but subsequently they may use their own tube as an anchor in soft sediment . • Changes to fish communities following the establishment of Sabella were analysed using multidimensional scaling and BACI (Before, After, Control, Impact) design analyses of variance. -

Department of Primary Industries Dry Seasonal Conditions in Rural Victoria Report: 51 September 22, 2005 Environmental Indicators Rainfall August rainfall totals were close to normal. Over winter as a whole, rainfall was somewhat above normal in the North East and in East Gippsland, somewhat below normal in Central Victoria and in West Gippsland, and near to normal elsewhere. August had a warm spell at the end of the month following the widespread snow on the 10th. Overall daytime temperatures were 1°C above average and nightime temperatures were about average. For the 6-month period from March to August, serious to severe rainfall deficiencies extend from the far southeast of South Australia across southwest and south-central Victoria to west Gippsland. The deficiencies over southern Victoria are not as extensive or intense as they were at the end of July. The most significant rainfall in September occurred through the second week and varied from 0-5 mm in the north west to over 100 mm in pockets of the North East (Figure 1). The seasonal rainfall outlook for October to December indicates an increased likelihood of below median falls over parts of southern Victoria for the December quarter. Chances of above median rainfall are between 30 and 40% in a band extending from the far southeast of South Australia to West Gippsland. This includes most of the areas that have suffered severe short-term rainfall deficiencies since the start of autumn, and a general downturn in rainfall since the mid 1990s. The chances of a wetter than average season are between 40 and 50% over the rest of the State. -
Blue Carbon’ Within Corangamite
The Distribution and Abundance of ‘Blue Carbon’ within Corangamite A report for the Corangamite Catchment Management Authority Funded by the Australian Government February 2015 Authors: Paul Carnell, Carolyn Ewers, Ellen Rochelmeyer, Richard Zavalas, Bruce Hawke, Daniel Ierodiaconou, Jonathan Sanderman and Peter Macreadie (corresponding author) Cover photo: Saltmarsh at Breamlea Executive Summary Vegetated coastal habitats—seagrasses, saltmarshes and mangroves—have recently been identified as one of the most effective carbon sinks on the planet. Such habitats can bury carbon at a rate 35-57 times faster than tropical rainforests and can store carbon for thousands of years. Recent global data estimate that vegetated coastal habitats contribute 50% of carbon burial in the oceans – termed “blue carbon”. These features make vegetated coastal habitats ideal candidates for carbon offset programs and nature-based climate mitigation initiatives. In 2014 the Corangamite Catchment Management Authority (CMA) identified a lack of information on the distribution and abundance of blue carbon within the catchment. Such information is critical for guiding the spatial prioritisation of conservation efforts. To address this knowledge gap, the Corangamite CMA commissioned researchers from Deakin University to conduct Corangamite’s first blue carbon stock assessment, focussing on sedimentary organic carbon. The major findings of this program are as follows: Corangamite has an estimated total blue carbon sediment stock of 431,502.02 Mg and a total carbon value of $6,472,530 over the top 30 cm of sediment at $15 Mg-1. It should be noted that because current sampling was confined to the top 30 cm of sediment, the carbon estimates given here are highly conservative. -

Dohrn’, Laboratorio di Ecologia del Benthos, 80077 Ischia (Napoli), Italy ABSTRACT: Genetic relationships between different populations of the invasive species Sabella spallanzanii (Gmelin, 1791) (Polychaeta, Sabellidae) are investigated through the use of the internal transcribed spacer 2 (ITS2) of the nuclear ribosomal DNA (285 bp). Samples were taken from South Australian waters (3 populations), the Mediterranean Sea (8 populations) and the French Atlantic coast (1 population). The ITS2 sequences were analyzed using both maximum parsimony and unweighted pair-group mean analysis (UPGMA) algorithms; results showed genetic disjunction between the Australian and the Mediterranean populations. Within the Mediterranean populations, 3 different sub-groups, corresponding to different sub-basins, could be clearly detected (Northwest- ern, Central and Eastern basins). The Atlantic population showed strong differences with the Mediterranean and Australian populations, but did not allow the identification of the source of intro- duction from Europe to Australia. Data also suggest the occurrence of a reduced genetic variability of the Australian populations, probably due to the ‘founder effect’ of one introduction, either via ballast waters or hull fouling. The recent description of the life cycle and larval development of S. spallan- zanii in the Mediterranean Sea, with a long pelagic larval phase and a post-settlement stage of meta- morphosis (approx. 25 d), supports the hypothesis of introduction via ballast waters (larval pool). -

Sarah Roberts, the nursery’s coordinator, is very busy in the nursery at this Notice of Annual General Meeting time of year and also provides advice to gardeners 17th April 2020 who drop in to buy plants on Wednesday 7.30pm mornings and every third Sunday morning. Queenscliff Uniting Church Sarah is also finding a new use for old potting mix, which she is popping it into a compost bin Guest Speaker: Dr Danny Rogers for later use on veggie gardens. Another project is “Birds of Swan Bay” the development of the nursery’s seed bank, which volunteers are helping organise. Danny is one of Australia’s best known shorebird ecologists with an unsurpassed knowledge of birds of Swan Bay. He is a research biologist at Arthur Rylah Institute (Dept Environment, Land, Water and Planning) and is a co-author of the recently published “Australian Bird Guide”.
