Altar Flowers in August Faith Notes Truly I say to you, whoever does not receive the kingdom of God like a child will not enter it at all. –Mark 10:15

As we enter into August, many of our minds turn to the approaching school year. In like manner, we at Faith turn our minds to a new journey of studying the Word of God in Bible study and Sunday School. This journey in the Word of God, will invariably lead us to think about repentance and faith –

but faith in what? Faith in our wonderful God and the good news that He has 6th—Gene & proclaimed in His Son, Jesus Christ, that He has dealt with Sin that was Donna Hunt separating us from Him and holding us in bondage. We must trust in faith that Sin has been dealt with on the Cross and through the life and resurrection of 13th—Charles Jesus. We must have faith in the faithfulness of our Heavenly Father. Just as a child has faith in its earthly father and mother to provide for it; the child trusts Koehler its parents to provide. As the Scripture above implies, we must trust God and His provision. 20th—Jason & To assist us in our trust of God and help us to see the wonder of His Megan Harvey attributes, we will be using the “Behold Your God” DVD series and workbook

this fall. Details about the new study are contained inside the newsletter. We 27th—Ted & Doris will be looking at what God has said about Himself in the Bible. Many of our Engelhardt concepts of God do not come from the Bible, but from our own imaginings and from our own ideas about Him. These wrong conceptions of God sometimes cause us to not trust in God, because we have made Him little or small. Or to not trust in God because we have altered His character to be more in line with “Words our thinking, even though He says, “My thoughts are not your thoughts, nor of Faith” are your ways My ways” (Isaiah 55:8). Many times when our conceptions of in August God have made Him small or petty, we have made our conceptions of ourselves large. Thus we have to get our conceptions right both of God and 6th—Harold & ourselves. We can no longer be “childish” in our understanding of God, but must get a realistic view of God, and become “childlike” in our trust of Him. Sherline Bogisch Some of the “childish” behavior in the church is due to the “childish” 13th—Mark & Gail notions we have about God. As we attempt to correct some of these “childish” notions, there may be much “kicking and screaming” as we seek to get rid of Herbold false ideas that we have held onto for a long time. These wrong ideas of God may have given us much comfort since we felt we could “control” God or 20th—Ed & Joyce make Him do our “bidding.” We would not probably put it in such crass Engelhardt language, but the reality of our beliefs are just that -- that we could control and understand God in such a way that He would do what we want Him to do. 27th—Jesse & We have made Him into a “safe” God, a predictable God, one that we can Deloris Atzger keep nicely inside our Bible, Who won’t bother what we want to do with “our” lives. A God who is sovereign and not beholding to us might upset “our apple cart.” continued on page 2

Faith Notes… continued from Pastor Taylor’s front page column

A God who is “wild” and “free” from any of our control, makes us not so August sovereign, and accountable to Him. As a result, God begins to become Birthdays somewhat threatening to “our way of life.” And so some may “kick and scream,” to hold onto the way things were, or to have things “the way we 01 Debbie Lehmann have always done them.”

My hope and prayer is that we will all do the hard work as we begin a 01 Chuck Powell new journey in the Word of God, to see God aright in the “Behold Your God” 02 Diane Ratliff series and grow in our relationship with Him. I pray that you will actively engage in the workbook exercises – not simply fill in the blanks, but actively 02 Bubba Eckhardt think about and contemplate the implications of what these exercises are saying to us from Scripture. May we all “behold our God” more rightly and 03 Laura Nash properly, and bow our lives to His sovereignty. “For we have been bought with 03 Ronnie Belcher a price, we are not our own” (1 Corinthians 6: 19, 20). We belong to God. And we are here to worship and praise Him as He has revealed Himself to be, not 03 Will Scull as we would like Him to be. We are His children. May we trust Him with a childlike faith, and put away our childishness as we begin again the serious 04 Boone Westerholm study of His Word. And may our church come to have a very big view of God and a properly small view of ourselves, in the light of His wonder and grace. 05 Diane Terp May you all be filled with anticipation as we prepare to “Behold our God” 06 Manuel Ramos (Isaiah 40:9)! The movie is part drama and part excerpts from Ray’s 01 Kevin & Fonda interviews with people on the street that are Mathis blended very well together. The movie

Finally, you will be able to listen to highlights from interviews with contemporary ministers whose lives and labors reflect these same truths. These include Paul Washer, Richard Owen Roberts, Jordan Thomas, Anthony Mathenia, Dr. Eifion Evans, Andrew Davies, and Conrad Mbewe. Comments from men whose gospel labors range from Peru, Ethiopia, Virginia, and Memphis to New Zealand, England, Wales, Ireland, and Zambia help to show that these are eternal truths about an eternal God who is not altered by any temporal or geographical context.

Many in our day are tired and disillusioned because they have consistently hoped in the next new idea. It is just this kind of day that makes Christians stop running on their religious hamster-wheels and ask “Why are we doing these programs?” and “Why doesn’t God ever really seem to show up and effectively work in our churches?” Hard questions often lead to right answers. This study is written with the conviction that our fundamental need in Western Christianity is to repent of our low and unworthy views of God, to return to the biblical descriptions of the true God, and to risk it all in order to live upon Who He is. Nothing in this study is new truth. The devotions and exercises in the workbook, and the intros, sermons, and interviews in the videos are meant only to help the reader to take the biblical descriptions of God seriously and to see how they form the foundation of Christian living.
