From the Baron and Baroness

Chirhart Blackstar and Jeanne Tenneur de Bec, Baron and Baroness of Bright Hills, send Greetings to the Barony!

As previously reported, last month we were newly returned from war, with news of the barony’s contributions and successes. With the recognition given to members of the barony, and the dinner we hosted for Their Majesties, it was a wonderful Pennsic.

As the end of summer approaches, the calendar is once again full of events and activities, with something to tempt everyone.

The last event in August is Dun Carraig’s birthday, which will also host the Lochmere Arrow competition. There are a lot of activities for everyone so we are looking forward to seeing many of you there. We will also be encouraging the archers from the barony in the quest to reclaim the Lochmere Arrow and return it to Bright Hills!

The next weekend, Steirbach is hosting a University event. Many members of the barony will be traveling to attend, either to teach, or to participate in classes.

On September 14, our neighbors Storvik and Lochmere will again host a joint birthday celebration. This event will see the investiture of a new Baron and Baroness for Storvik and a lot of other activities. We are planning to attend and have reserved space on the field for the pavilion. Watch for the upcoming announcements; there will be a light lunch as usual.

October brings events every weekend, beginning with the Coronation of Their Highnesses Ragnar and Lynette. We will be sorry to see Their Majesties step down because They have been good friends to the barony, but we welcome another northern king and look forward to seeing a lot of them.

To that end, if you have recommendations for awards, please submit them. If you let us know of recommendations that you have, we can add our voice.

We also want to let you all know that we have advised Their Highnesses and our Seneschal, Graham, of our intent to continue our term of service as the baronial coronets. Our first term will expire next February, at the Baronial Birthday event, so we have requested a vote of confidence. As this process continues, there will be more information forthcoming. In the meantime if you have any questions, please contact us, or Lord Graham.

In Your Service, we are Chirhart and Jeanne, Baron and Baroness of Bright Hills.

From the Chronicler

August was a quiet month. Not so for September. Every weekend is a Jewish holiday. I am sorry I won’t be at events this month, but I will be enjoying holiday festivities with friends. September also marks the month I go back to not attending meetings. My deputy will be there with my proxy vote if needed and she will take notes for the newsletter.

Thank you to barony for your support. This month is a perfect example of why I love Bright Hills. Thank you to all of this month’s contributors: Mistress Martell for the cover art, Lady Wynne for her article on Kingdom awards, Lady Katarzyna for lovely poem, Mistress Cordelia for her chicken recipe, Countess Rowan and Baron Ivan for sharing their persona history and Lady Wanda for her beautiful pictures from Pennsic. This is why I love doing this newsletter.

THL Sindara

Officers of the Barony of Bright Hills MINUTES August 23, 2013, 7:10 P.M.

I. Minutes of July Meeting – Baroness Jeanne call the meeting called to order at 7:10 PM. Lord Graham was unable to attend due to mundane work commitments. The Minutes of the July meeting were accepted.

II. Attendees . Baroness Jeanne Tenneur de Bec, Lord Alexander Fowler, Lady Yseulte Trevelyn, Lady Wynne ferch Rhodri ap Hwyell, THL Sindara Lind Rachael Fessel, Lady Livia di Samuele, Lady Michelle England, Lord Karl, Baroness Barbara Giumaria di Roberto, Baroness Swieczka Kaim, Baron Heinrich Kreiner, Lady Deirdre O’Bardon, Lady Reyne Telarius, Lord Janyn Fletcher and Mistress Martell.

III. Report of the – We had a busy Pennsic. The barony shined and we appreciate all the hard work.

We plan to be at the following events: Lochmere Arrow, Battle by the Bay, Storvik Investiture, Fall Coronation, War of the Wings (Baron will be there alone.). The demo at the church is the same day as Challis. If the champions want to go, we will split between the demo and Challis. Our A&S Champion Countess Rowan will be at War of the Wings.

We posted information about the additional peerage for rapier. We encourage the populace to voice their opinions.

VI. Officer Reports (by e-mail) A. Chronicler: THL Sindara Lind Rachael Fessel – The Yeoman nominated for Black Fox awards in two categories: regular column for "From the Bright Hills Kitchen" and a story written by Lady Katarzyna. This month's newsletter is collaboration. Thank to Mistress Martelle who has promised a cover, to Lady Wynne for another article on Atlantian awards, to Lady Katarzyna for another wonderful poem, to Mistress Cordelia for chicken recipe, and to Lady Wanda and Lord Janyn for their photos. I have received event and demo announcements from Lady Katarzyna. However, I still do not have information on TNT from Lady Faye. This meeting will be my last until May due to earlier sundown times and next month Jewish holidays. I have already started a newsletter template for October to assist with getting the newsletter out on time next month. I apologize in advance for not being at many events in September due to when the holidays fall.

4 B. Herald: Lady Deirdre O’Bardon – Bright Hills heralds have been active during the last month commenting on name and device submissions, volunteering at Heralds' Point at Pennsic and heralding at baronial and kingdom courts. There is a change coming in October. Beatrice Shirwood will become the Bright Hills baronial herald at TnT, but I will continue to do much of the court heraldry.

Addition: Lady Wynne noted that there is a heralds’ gathering and will provide the more information. C. Webminster: Janyn – The web page is up to date. I am waiting on information for TNT and KASF 2014 to add to the web page. Addendum : There is a problem with both the SCA and Atlantia servers. D. MOAS: Lady Reyne Telerius - Due to Pennsic, many groups did not have meetings, and fighter practices were sparsely attended. However, there were a few things happening. Baroness Swieczka taught a class on July 19th on how to construct a Viking apron, and followed it up on August 2nd with fittings. Sewing lessons at her house started back up on Wednesday, August 19th, and will continue to be held every Wednesday evening. She also helped staff a demo in the East Kingdom, the McSherrytown Demo. Her report is as follows: I have finally been able to get to a real computer (in the basement, it's sooo far away) to send out a HUGE THANK YOU to all the folks that came out to the McSherrystown demo on Aug 10, 2013. Without you we wouldn't have had much of a demo. I was surprised and amazed that for the weekend following Pennsic 16 brave and wonderful souls came out to show McSherrystown just what we do. The weather was perfect and the company was even better. From Bright hills: Swieczka Kaim Cairell mac Cormaic Randver Askmadr Rebecca von Zweckel Livia di Samuele Daniella Schwartzhaupt Kollack von Zweckel Clara William Chagan Khulan Fulk the Bald Elizabeth

Guests from East Kingdom; (actually we were guests in their Kingdom but it was my co-worker that asked for the demo, so we combined forces. See how well we work together?)

Wulfram Bernhardt Linette De Gallardon Robert the Tall FhaolaEtain ingen n Orlaithe the Wanderer

Activities included heavy fighting, archery (Wulfram provided the target), A&S displays of many, glass bead making and calligraphy. Daniella actually provided 250 self coloring book marks, which she calligraphied names on the back of. 30 plus children and adults participated in this activity alone. We had music and singing by FhaolaEtain ingen n and Linette De Gallardon accompanied by Elizabeth. Our archers attracted many festival goers who were able to try their hand at the bow and arrow. The fighters of course had many questions to field about the fighting and armor. Everyone present did what we do best, show off our wears and answer questions about what we do and what we are about. The ladies from our bordering Kingdom provided fliers with SCA and contact information to interested parties. (I need more of Master Tristan’s beautiful handouts; my stash was used up at the Codorus Blast Demo). We were asked by the Principle and a teacher of a nearby school about possibly doing a demo for them. Linette will notify us if this comes about. Organizers of the festival were amazed at what we brought to the festival and the color we added to their 250th Anniversary celebration. So once again, without All of you this demo would not have been the success it was. I can't thank you enough for spending your afternoon with me in McSherrystown. Hopefully, I've included everyone who was there I sincerely apologize if I missed adding your name to the list. If I have let me know so I can thank you properly. 5 YIS, Dawn/Baroness Swieczka Kingdom of Atlantia Barony of Bright Hills Haus Wulfshaven

Lady Ingeborg sent in this message On August 18th, I taught 2 children and 3 adults to do Viking wire weaving. It was during my sister's wedding up at her farmette above Duluth. I taught the next day during the party after it. I told my students about the SCA. It was a good teeny tiny demo. Ingeborg

Also, thanks very much to Lady Livia di Samuele, who was able to get the tub of MoAS, and the banner and stand for me. She was also able to get the brewer’s guild regalia back, and will hand that off the Mistress Brienna.

Guild Reports:

Lady Wynne offered to do up some pretty menus for the buffet. Lady Deidre is looking into procuring the Fire Hall for an intensive pre-cook the Friday before the event. The day of the event we will assemble at 2pm for set up and prep at the site. We discussed borrowing the Vulcan Stove on wheels as a back up cooking resource for the day. Baroness Jeanne de Bec reported that the Pennsic Royal Dinner was a smashing success with Their Majesties complimenting the Guild and the Barony on the authenticity and overall

6 "medievalness" of the tent, the dishes and the food. Their Royal Majesties and about 20 of Their Retainers and Visitors were entertained and fed into submission. His Majesty said that it gave Them a rare chance to actually relax during the long hectic schedule of Pennsic. The Guild voted to reimburse the encampment $100 for supplies used to prepare the dinner.

Baronial Birthday- The Barony Turns 20! Much discussion was had on what the favorite dishes were over the last 20 years of Baronial Feast Cooking. The Autocrat, Lady Livia has asked us to contact the previous Baronage and ask them what their favorite foods were during their tenure and to prepare a feast from those selections. She has also asked us to bring any pictures we may have of the last 20 years of the Baronial events so that they can be copied into a large online photo album. Seeing as he was not present, we voted that Lord Bruce would lead the Kitchen Staff for Birthday. :) Others have offered to help with the preparation and shopping. Green Lions Bay is hosting the Day of Dance as their Tavern event on January 18th, 2014. Lady Akiyo is the head cook. Lady Akiyo will be hosting the September 8th Meeting at her house in Bowie, MD and asks that we bring dishes that we want to be considered for Birthday.

We adjourned at this point for socializing and noshing.

6. Herb Group: nothing to report 7. Illumination: no report 8. PAGE: The Performing Arts Guild Extraordinaire (PAGE) has begun hatching plans for future performances, including for the Kingdom Arts and Science event to be hosted by the barony in February. The next meetings will be September 8 and 29th, from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m., at the home of Lady Nina and Lord Luke. If you have questions about what we do, or how to find us, call the guild mistress, Lady Yseulte Trevelyn (Karen Setze) at 410-721-4752. 9. St. Matthias: Nothing to report 10. Science: no report 11. Scriptorium: no report 12. TAG: nothing to report 13. Woodworkers: Woodworkers Guild Lord Owen and I made a trip to the sale held by the blacksmith in North East Md. Completed the 26 string harp made from a cherry log. We started working on another harp for Illya, to be made from walnut donated by His Excellency. Lord Luke of Bright Hills

14. Addition: Canton of Green Lion’s Bay A&S: We are going to be bottling mead soon. The first Friday of every month will be A&S night at our meeting place. I will be teaching crochet the first night while we bottle mead. Everyone is taking a turn teaching. Andy, our new exchequer is going to teach us how to make a chainmail bracelet one month. There will also be a garb night planned. We will be making favors for our event in November. Respectfully, Philipp H.

Again, anyone who wishes to teach a class, please let me know what you want to teach, when, and any specifics.

E. MOL: Lord Alexander Fowler - No MoL activity this past month. F. Youth Officer: Lady Wynne ferch Rhodri - The Children’s fete was a success. While there was a lower attendance this year as compared to last year, the children as well as the parents and volunteers had a joyful time.

7 The Bright hills table hosted at least 60 children for card weaving. This year, thanks to Mistress Anne of Hatfield’s donation of plastic sewing needles, the children were able to both make AND take their weaving card if unfinished. Many returned for more cards for themselves or siblings or friends back in their camps. It is my hope that next year more of our Baronial members can attend and volunteer at our table. There was no expense other than the needles, which were a donation. As a side, I think Bright Hills can knit socks for the entirety of the Atlantian Army for next Pennsic with all the donated yarn I have received. My thanks to all who donated items for the benefit of our children, the real treasures of the Kingdom. Addition: Battle on the Bay Sept 13-15, Lochmere, will need help with children’s activity. G. Exchequer: Michelle England – Because of issues before Pennsic, the kingdom report was late. All checks cleared. Business as usual. Our incipient canton didn’t submit its receipts from its last event, yet they are asking for reimbursement. Lord Graham is looking into the situation. They do not have a current exchequer, which needs to be addressed. H. Chiurgeon: Lord Richard ffaukes - Nothing to report, except I'll be the CiC for the Dun Carraig event next weekend. I. Heavy Weapons Marshall: Baron Heinrich Kreiner – There is a lapse in losing classes. J. Archery Marshall: THL Godai Katsunaga - As you know I have been the Target Archery Marshal for many years and it is now time to step down form this position. I have enjoyed working with all the fine archers in Bright Hills. If you are interested in becoming the next TAM for Bright Hills please email me so I can gather a list and make recommendations to the Baron and Baroness. Deadline is Sept 15, 2013. I expect to step down at Steppingstone.

V. Old Business A. McSherrystown Demo - Baroness Swieczka: The weather was beautiful. We had 16 people between Bright Hills and the East Kingdom. The activities included archery, A&S, fighting, and youth stuff – we made bookmarks. Thank you to all those that came. B. Demo October 19, 2013 Christ Episcopal Church’s Pumpkin Festival – Mistress Martell reported for Lady Katarzyna : The demo is from 10 AM – 4 PM. There will be fighting, music, woodworking, blacksmithing, quilling, a loom, and making a Bayeux Tapestry for the church hall. Other classes are in the works. Contact Lady Katarzyna to participate. C. TNT – Lady Faye: All plans are coming along. I will get fliers to everyone over the weekend. I will be talking to Graham over the weekend about the tourneys. There will be classes. Lady Reyne is in charge of that. See her if you want to teach a class. Lady Deidre has provided me with the final feast menu. D. KASF - Mistress Martelle reported for Lady Katarzyna: We will have a flyer soon. Their soon-to-be majesties, Ragnarr and Lynette, will be attending. Nichola Blackwell will be the Royal Liaison. E. Baronial Birthday – Lady Livia: A budget was provided. We now have the correct date from the firehall. It is February 8 not February 15. The date is clear and I will spike it tonight. We have permission to use all outdoor structures and use all partial buildings as well. We will have 3-5 scanners available to scan pictures. Lady Sindara will supply the release forms. The bid was discussed and accepted by the officers. F. TBF-ABC-Fortuna’s Games – Lady Yseulte: After much discussion we have a date of June 20-22, 2014. It will be a camping event at Baltimore Bowman. In honor of Fortuna and summer solstice I am planning gambling games, children’s chariot races, funny weapons tourney, rapier tavern, a roman themed archery tournament, and a murder mystery at Fortuna’s Tavern. Bid and date changes were discussed and approved. The event will be spiked this evening.

VII. New Business A. Scribal Schola – Mistress Martelle for Lady Katarzyna: We received a good response from last year’s schola. We plan to hold it again. There is no expense because we have the use of the Lady Wynne’s church for free. The only expense as of now is $50 to provide the pewter for the site tokens. Baron Heinrich offered to donate the pewter. We plan to spike it for March 15, 2014. It will be strictly scribal related classes. There will be no martial activities. The cook’s guild will do a bake sale and the Archer’s will do a lunch fundraiser. The event fee will be split with the church. All participants will get university credit. If there is room, we will have classes that are not scribal related. Lady Katarzyna is

8 the autocrat. Lady Amelia Rosa is in charge of classes. The bid was briefly discussed. A motion was made and the bid was accepted. B. A request was made to reimburse for the supplies used to make the chains for the kingdom and baronial awards. $163 was awarded.

Meeting was adjourned at 7:56 p.m.

3. Playing with Heraldry-Literally! Sponsored by Duchess Seonaid ni Fhionn We are a noble and ancient kingdom, but sometimes it is good to return to the days or our youth and rediscover some of the fun and frolic we often seem to have left behind - in that spirit I, Duchess Seonaid ni Fhionn put forth a challenge to all comers.

This competition is for heraldic display - any arms, yours, your spouse, child, friend, your local group, the Kingdom arms, etc. The twist is that the arms are to be displayed on your favorite toys, dolls, etc. The toys do NOT have to be period - teddy bears, Barbie dolls, rocking horses, game boards and pieces, anything you can think of. Period toys are also welcome. Some examples could be - a Teddy Bear in Tudor Costume (he is in my daughter's room right now), a Rocking Horse with Heraldic Barding, a chessboard with the pieces outfitted in the arms of each of our Baronies, Shires and Cantons with the Kingdom Arms on the board, etc. Game cards representing well-known figures from Atlantian History or the Atlantia of today, a doll dressed as yourself or someone you admire - the possibilities are endless. Minimum documentation is requested. History of the arms displayed and some basic information on what inspired you to choose your item and (if applicable, what period it represents). Use your imagination for your documentation as well. Your documentation can be fun and creative - game instructions, a letter from your dressed doll or toy, etc. ALL AGES can join in the fun! There will be various prizes awarded and I also encourage all of the populace to visit the exhibit and leave tokens for those that you admire. I will have tokens available there for anyone who wishes to participate but has no supplies.

Upcoming Demos,

October 19, 2013 Christ Episcopal Church’s Pumpkin Festival

All progresses well for the demo for the Pumpkin Festival at Christ Episcopal Church in Forestville, Maryland, on Saturday, October 19 th from10 to 4. So far we have fighting, music, woodworking, blacksmithing, quilling, a loom, and making a Bayeux Tapestry for the church hall. Other rumors include a cheesemaking class and a ballista (if it is repaired). Please contact Lady Katarzyna at [email protected] if you would like to share your talents on that day. If you have special requirements, please let me know ahead of time so I can coordinate with the church. I am still hope to have calligraphy, Viking wire weaving, tablet weaving, kumihomo, etc. We can set up a table for an A&S display as well.

______

We have been invited to do a demo at the Royal Rabbit Winery by Lady Elysende. Since it was for the same time as the Church demo or our Steppingstone event, I suggested we could not do it. They have a group from the East Kingdom who has agreed to do it. Do we have any objections?

We have a blanket invitation to do a demo at a mutually convenient time.

The Artisans’ Cabinet

Awards of the Kingdom of Atlantia

Within the Kingdom of Atlantia, there are awards that are considered to be of High Merit. That means that they are polling orders and are accompanied by a Grant of Arms.

14 The recipient may use a helm and mantling around the shield; such as Lady Alexandria Wrights’ below.

Herein follows the descriptions of Altantia’s Awards of High Merit.

The Pearl

The Order of the Pearl, honors and recognizes members of the populace who have shown great talent, and skill in an area of the Arts and/or Sciences within our time period. This includes not only doing but also teaching this particular art or science. It is the willingness to spend time to discover all you can about a subject or subjects, showing it off (and who doesn’t like showing off from time to time? ☺) but also sharing all that knowledge, the trials, tribulations and successes with others; serving as guide and teacher to those who want to know what you did and how you did it. It was established on April 29, 1977 during the reign of TRM Alaric and Yseult.

The Sea Stag

Recipients of the Sea Stag have distinguished themselves by their teaching of armored and/or rapier fighting. It has since been expanded to include all martial disciplines. TRM Laeghaire and Ysabeau awarded to first Sea Stag on June 11, 1977. Golden Dolphin

This award is given to those who have distinguished themselves through exceptional service and leadership to our beloved Kingdom. Its members refer to themselves as a “Pod” a reflection on the habits of its mundane namesake. It was first awarded while Atlantia was still a principality by TRM Laeghaire and Ysabeau, July 16, 1977. Yew Bow

(As this was a long and complicated entry, I have cut and pasted the version found on the Atlantian site) The Order of the Yew Bow honors and recognizes those subjects who have distinguished themselves by their excellence with bow and arrow (both target and combat), thrown weapons, and/or siegecraft or the teaching of those same skills. 15

In November 1993, the former Order of the King's Missiliers, for combat archery, and the former order of the Nimrod, for target archery, were closed, and their recipients were considered recipients of the new (now former) Award of Yew and Sinew. The award was later renamed the Yew Bow. The award was closed and the order created as an AoA level, polling order on January 1, 2002. All recipients of the Order of the King's Missiliers (prior to Feb. 7, 2003), the Order of the Nimrod (now closed), and the Award of the Yew Bow (now closed) will be considered to be recipients of this award. As of April 1, 2003, the Yew Bow became a Grant level polling order, and was expanded from just archery to include siege and thrown weapons. The first to receive this accolade at the hands of TRM Baudoin and Caterina were Randall Arrowsmith (under the name Order of the King's Missiliers) and Aelfred of Cres (under the name Order of the Nimrod) on October 3, 1987.

The Order of the White Scarf

Practitioners of the Noble Art of Fence are awarded this Order as they have shown great skill and expertise in fencing and in advancing its precepts as examples for all to look up to. April 1993 saw the first White Scarf awarded. The Academie d’Espee was first a non-armigerous award. But with the signing of the White Scarf Treaty it became an AoA then a GoA level award.

The Kraken

This Order is for non-belted fighters who have distinguished themselves by consistent excellence on the field. This became a Grant level award in 2003 and bestows a Grant of Arms on the recipient…oh boy…more helms and mantling!

[Picture not available…yet.]

The Order of the Golden Lance of Atlantia honors and recognizes those subjects who have demonstrated exceptional expertise in the arts of equestrian activities and who have, through service to the equestrian community, advanced those arts and promoted them. While this award is brand new (September, 2011) and not yet registered with Laurel, there are three members already!

Members of the populace, whether you’ve been around since its inception or just joined a few minutes ago may recommend anyone for an award. Atlantia has a site for such a thing…http://award.atlantia.sca.org/ It’s easy, it’s fun and it’s a way for people who have worked very hard to be recognized.

Oh, and by the way…we here in Bright Hills can do the same thing for our folks…just send an e-mail to their Excellencies!

Keep watch friends, there are jewels among us… Wynne Nereid

Legend of the Glass Mountain A Polish Legend by Lady Katarzyna Witkowska

A story is told that bold have failed Where cleverness and courage have prevailed. There once was a towering glass mountain. That lay in the center of great Poland. On top of that sparkling mound of pure glass Was a castle that held a lovely princess. A cruel sorceress imprisoned her there— She with sparkling eyes, exceedingly fair. Throughout the lands brave knights heard of her plight. They came eager to show their skill and might. But try as they may they could not succeed And all found death as reward for their deed.

The princess lived in a room of silver, Feared her fate to be alone forever. Each rescuer plunged down the glassy side. Never, oh never, would she be a bride. A room of jewels provided no delight. She mourned and she cried all through the long night. A dragon guarded the flower-filled square. Though no rescuer ever made it there. Outside of the castle was a tall tree That held golden apples for all to see. And in that tree lived a hawk of great size Who sat there and searched the glassy sides.

For three years she sat there in fortress cold Until came a in armor of gold. He climbed the glass mountain on his fine steed The princess was heartened by his bold deed. When the valiant knight and his doughty mount Came to the top of the glassy ascent, The hawk swooped down and attacked them direly. Poked out the eyes of the horse most cruelly. The golden knight down the mountain did slide And died with his brave charger by his side. More hopeless than ever the fair princess, She spent her days and nights in great distress.

Two days later a wise student appeared. To rescue the princess he volunteered. He was quite handsome with perceptive eyes. He studied the mountain from ground to skies. In the forest he found a lynx to slay. He returned before the end of the day. Upon his hands and his feet he had set The very sharp claws of the vicious cat. Up the glassy slope he began to climb. Rescuing the princess fair filled his mind. Up he went until weariness took hold.

17 Then dug in the claws and slept in the cold.

At midnight the moon in its glory rose And shed its light on the sleeper below. The hawk with its keen eye saw the student, Destroying him was the evil bird’s bent. The student awoke in the nick of time On glassy slope where he did boldly climb. The hawk grabbed him, the hawk’s legs did he seize They flew high above the castle with ease. He took his knife, cut the legs from the bird, Then he fell into the tree--undeterred. Quickly he filled his pockets with apples Jumped down and moved with care to the castle.

Then the student burst through the castle gate Where the fierce, sleeping dragon did await. The lad took the creature quite by surprise And bashed it with apples despite its size. The dragon awoke in fear and took flight Thus did wisdom finish the princess’ plight. The princess ran into his waiting arms Brimming with thanks for her rescue from harm. The two heard shouts of great joy from below The knights arose who were killed long ago. You see the blood of the hawk awoke them The sorceress’s death freed them – The End.

18 Get to Know the People of the Barony Countess Rowan Berran McDowell and Baron Ivan Ivanovich Nemytyi

Having run away from home when her father insisted that she either marry the rich but witless lord he had picked out for her or enter the convent, Rowan Berran McDowell took herself and three well laden ponies off to find a ship at Waterford, Ireland to take her across the sea to find her fortune- or at least a better husband than the one Father had decided on.

On the Viking ship that she hired for her journey she met a Rus Viking, Ivan Ivanovich Nemytyi, fell madly in love and they travelled together for the next three years. During those three years, Rowan, being given to a love of travel and knowing well how to read and write, found herself heading up a caravan headed out of Venice and off to the Silk Road. There she met with the Mongols and having beguiled them with good food and the comforts of her travelling bathtub, she and her Beloved were brought to Samarkand to meet the Khan himself. Due to a failure in translation, it became clear that the Khan wished to adopt her as his Daughter and marry her off to a high ranking noble. Explaining that her heart was already given to Ivan, her true companion and hearts delight, the Khan insisted on adopting her anyway since she was going to teach him how to read and write the clever English that has so eluded his court up until now, and granted her a huge dowry of camels, silks, horses, goats, and a gold cloth ger with a company of riders to escort them wherever they wished to go. Ivan and Rowan were married immediately and the nuptials were celebrated for the traditional three days at which point, they resumed their caravans travels bringing back much trade goods and treasure from Samarkand to Venice and Florence.

Their fortunes made, Rowan and Ivan still travel with their caravans across the Silk Road trading in spices and other luxuries, being sure to bring books and paper and ink to the Khan each summer and donating a portion of their wealth to the upkeep of a Buddhist monastery and orphanage.

Although they divide their time between Mongolia and Europe, their neighbors declare in scandal that Rowan is more comfortable riding upon the back of a camel then on any of the horses in her keep. Ivan, however, spends much of his days exploring the usages of steam for driving mechanical conveyances and can sometimes be seen careening across the meadows in one of his latest contraptions with some man called Leonardo.

Their servants have reported that they never know what to expect when They come down for dinner or when they will be packing up and leaving them for months at a time. Still, one servant has opined "it is never dull!"

From the Bright Hills Kitchen: Gypsy Chicken:

First steal a chicken.

Clean the chicken inside and out. Peel a good sized handful of garlic and shove inside the bird. Drizzle some olive oil on the inside; salt and 19 pepper the inside of the bird. Drizzle some more olive oil on the outside of the bird, add salt, pepper and garlic powder...

Now wrap the bird in 5-7 layers of heavy duty aluminum foil, sealing each layer as you go, making it airtight. The bird should look like a large silver football. Place on a baking sheet and roast in a moderate (350-375 degrees) oven for between 3 and 4 hours (depending on size, 4-5 lb birds about 3 hours, 6-7 lb birds closer to 4 hours.

Peel back the foil and place on a plate surrounded by the garlic removed from the cavity and with some of the juices drizzled over all. This will be the moistest, most tender chicken you've ever eaten. When properly done, it falls of the bone---and that's all that ever comes back to the kitchen---just the bones.

PS. This recipe works just as well cooked in a fire pit but you do have to be careful to use the best quality heaviest duty aluminum foil or you might get some burn through and that ruins the birdie.
