As previously reported, last month we were newly returned from war, with news of the barony’s contributions and successes. With the recognition given to members of the barony, and the dinner we hosted for Their Majesties, it was a wonderful Pennsic. As the end of summer approaches, the calendar is once again full of events and activities, with something to tempt everyone. The last event in August is Dun Carraig’s birthday, which will also host the Lochmere Arrow competition. There are a lot of activities for everyone so we are looking forward to seeing many of you there. We will also be encouraging the archers from the barony in the quest to reclaim the Lochmere Arrow and return it to Bright Hills! The next weekend, Steirbach is hosting a University event. Many members of the barony will be traveling to attend, either to teach, or to participate in classes. On September 14, our neighbors Storvik and Lochmere will again host a joint birthday celebration. This event will see the investiture of a new Baron and Baroness for Storvik and a lot of other activities. We are planning to attend and have reserved space on the field for the pavilion. Watch for the upcoming announcements; there will be a light lunch as usual. October brings events every weekend, beginning with the Coronation of Their Highnesses Ragnar and Lynette. We will be sorry to see Their Majesties step down because They have been good friends to the barony, but we welcome another northern king and look forward to seeing a lot of them. To that end, if you have recommendations for awards, please submit them. If you let us know of recommendations that you have, we can add our voice. We also want to let you all know that we have advised Their Highnesses and our Seneschal, Lord Graham, of our intent to continue our term of service as the baronial coronets. Our first term will expire next February, at the Baronial Birthday event, so we have requested a vote of confidence. As this process continues, there will be more information forthcoming. In the meantime if you have any questions, please contact us, or Lord Graham. In Your Service, we are Chirhart and Jeanne, Baron and Baroness of Bright Hills. 3 From the Chronicler August was a quiet month. Not so for September. Every weekend is a Jewish holiday. I am sorry I won’t be at events this month, but I will be enjoying holiday festivities with friends. September also marks the month I go back to not attending meetings. My deputy will be there with my proxy vote if needed and she will take notes for the newsletter. Thank you to barony for your support. This month is a perfect example of why I love Bright Hills. Thank you to all of this month’s contributors: Mistress Martell for the cover art, Lady Wynne for her article on Kingdom awards, Lady Katarzyna for lovely poem, Mistress Cordelia for her chicken recipe, Countess Rowan and Baron Ivan for sharing their persona history and Lady Wanda for her beautiful pictures from Pennsic. This is why I love doing this newsletter. THL Sindara Officers of the Barony of Bright Hills MINUTES August 23, 2013, 7:10 P.M. I. Minutes of July Meeting – Baroness Jeanne call the meeting called to order at 7:10 PM. Lord Graham was unable to attend due to mundane work commitments. The Minutes of the July meeting were accepted. II. Attendees . Baroness Jeanne Tenneur de Bec, Lord Alexander Fowler, Lady Yseulte Trevelyn, Lady Wynne ferch Rhodri ap Hwyell, THL Sindara Lind Rachael Fessel, Lady Livia di Samuele, Lady Michelle England, Lord Karl, Baroness Barbara Giumaria di Roberto, Baroness Swieczka Kaim, Baron Heinrich Kreiner, Lady Deirdre O’Bardon, Lady Reyne Telarius, Lord Janyn Fletcher and Mistress Martell. III. Report of the Baronage – We had a busy Pennsic. The barony shined and we appreciate all the hard work. We plan to be at the following events: Lochmere Arrow, Battle by the Bay, Storvik Investiture, Fall Coronation, War of the Wings (Baron will be there alone.). The demo at the church is the same day as Challis. If the champions want to go, we will split between the demo and Challis. Our A&S Champion Countess Rowan will be at War of the Wings. We posted information about the additional peerage for rapier. We encourage the populace to voice their opinions. VI. Officer Reports (by e-mail) A. Chronicler: THL Sindara Lind Rachael Fessel – The Yeoman nominated for Black Fox awards in two categories: regular column for "From the Bright Hills Kitchen" and a story written by Lady Katarzyna. This month's newsletter is collaboration. Thank to Mistress Martelle who has promised a cover, to Lady Wynne for another article on Atlantian awards, to Lady Katarzyna for another wonderful poem, to Mistress Cordelia for chicken recipe, and to Lady Wanda and Lord Janyn for their photos. I have received event and demo announcements from Lady Katarzyna. However, I still do not have information on TNT from Lady Faye. This meeting will be my last until May due to earlier sundown times and next month Jewish holidays. I have already started a newsletter template for October to assist with getting the newsletter out on time next month. I apologize in advance for not being at many events in September due to when the holidays fall. 4 B. Herald: Lady Deirdre O’Bardon – Bright Hills heralds have been active during the last month commenting on name and device submissions, volunteering at Heralds' Point at Pennsic and heralding at baronial and kingdom courts. There is a change coming in October. Beatrice Shirwood will become the Bright Hills baronial herald at TnT, but I will continue to do much of the court heraldry. Addition: Lady Wynne noted that there is a heralds’ gathering and will provide the more information. C. Webminster: Janyn – The web page is up to date. I am waiting on information for TNT and KASF 2014 to add to the web page. Addendum : There is a problem with both the SCA and Atlantia servers. D. MOAS: Lady Reyne Telerius - Due to Pennsic, many groups did not have meetings, and fighter practices were sparsely attended. However, there were a few things happening. Baroness Swieczka taught a class on July 19th on how to construct a Viking apron, and followed it up on August 2nd with fittings. Sewing lessons at her house started back up on Wednesday, August 19th, and will continue to be held every Wednesday evening. She also helped staff a demo in the East Kingdom, the McSherrytown Demo. Her report is as follows: I have finally been able to get to a real computer (in the basement, it's sooo far away) to send out a HUGE THANK YOU to all the folks that came out to the McSherrystown demo on Aug 10, 2013. Without you we wouldn't have had much of a demo. I was surprised and amazed that for the weekend following Pennsic 16 brave and wonderful souls came out to show McSherrystown just what we do. The weather was perfect and the company was even better. From Bright hills: Swieczka Kaim Cairell mac Cormaic Randver Askmadr Rebecca von Zweckel Livia di Samuele Daniella Schwartzhaupt Kollack von Zweckel Clara William Chagan Khulan Fulk the Bald Elizabeth Guests from East Kingdom; (actually we were guests in their Kingdom but it was my co-worker that asked for the demo, so we combined forces. See how well we work together?) Wulfram Bernhardt Linette De Gallardon Robert the Tall FhaolaEtain ingen n Orlaithe the Wanderer Activities included heavy fighting, archery (Wulfram provided the target), A&S displays of many, glass bead making and calligraphy. Daniella actually provided 250 self coloring book marks, which she calligraphied names on the back of. 30 plus children and adults participated in this activity alone. We had music and singing by FhaolaEtain ingen n and Linette De Gallardon accompanied by Elizabeth. Our archers attracted many festival goers who were able to try their hand at the bow and arrow. The fighters of course had many questions to field about the fighting and armor. Everyone present did what we do best, show off our wears and answer questions about what we do and what we are about.
