Inset: The Barton Springs swimming pool in Austin, Texas, exemplifies the conflicting interests regarding the aquifer’s waters. The pool is supplied by springs that discharge from submerged orifices in fractured limestone, which is vis- ible on the right bank. The pool and surrounding park are impor- tant recreational resources. This spring system is the sole environ- ment for the rare Barton Springs salamander, which is a federally listed endangered species. The ris- ing skyline of the City of Austin is visible in the background. -

Clemens, President, called the meeting to order at 3:00 PM and welcomed the group to the 54th Annual Meeting. He then announced the grad student meeting at 5:00 PM on October 22. John Flynn, Secretary, gave his report, which included the following motions: motion to accept 1993 annual meeting minutes; motion to accept 1994 midyear meeting minutes; motion to accept the Secretary's report. All motions were seconded and approved by vote of attending SVP members. Flynn also reviewed the 1993 94 election ballot results noting that Louis Jacobs will serve as Vice President, John R. Bolt as Treasurer, and Lawrence Flynn as the Member-at-Large in 1994 95. John R. Bolt, Treasurer, presented his report which included an overview of the Society's financial position as well as a review of the 1994 95 budget. A motion to accept the Treasurer's report was made, seconded, and approved. Richard Cifelli, JVP editor, presented the JVP Committee report for 1993 94 which included an overview of the Journal 's average page length, average contributions, rejection rate percentages, page print totals, and comparisons to previous years. A motion was made to accept the report, which was seconded and approved. -

The report contains information regarding the location of non-renewable paleontological resources within NPS units. It is not intended for distribution to the general public. On the Cover: French naturalist Charles A. Lesueur collected and illustrated numerous fossils from the base of “Walnut Hills” near Vicksburg, Mississippi in 1829. His “Walnut Hills” locality is within or immediately adjacent to what is now Vicksburg National Military Park. The cover illustration is the first of 12 such plates from “Walnut Hills” and includes the first measured section and detailed geological study within Mississippi. The fossils are identified by Lesueur as: bryozoan (fig. 6); foraminifera (figs. 7-10, 16); coral (fig. 14); and scaphopods (straight shelled mollusks, figs. 13,18). Dockery (1982) reproduced all of Lesueur’s plates. The original plates are housed in the Academy of Natural Sciences in Philadelphia. An Inventory of Mesozoic Mammals and Non-Mammalian Therapsids in National Park Service Areas

SANTUCCI National Park Service, Geologic Resources Division, 1201 Eye Street, NW, Washington, D.C. 20005 -email: [email protected] Abstract— Body and trace fossils of Mesozoic mammals and non-mammalian therapsids have been documented in nine National Park Service areas, along with one probable occurrence and one case where fossils have been found immediately outside of a monument’s boundaries. To date, body fossils of Mesozoic mammals are documented from geologic formations in three NPS areas: the Aguja Formation (Upper Cretaceous) of Big Bend National Park; the John Henry Member of the Straight Cliffs Formation and the Wahweap Formation (Upper Cretaceous) of Bryce Canyon National Park; and the Morrison Formation (Upper Jurassic) of Dinosaur National Monument. A probable Mesozoic mammal bone has also been recovered from the Morrison Formation of Curecanti National Recreation Area. Bones of non-mammalian Mesozoic therapsids have only been reported from the Chinle Formation (Upper Triassic) of Petrified Forest National Park, although fossil remains have also been found just outside of the boundary of Navajo National Monument in the Navajo Sandstone (Lower Jurassic). Tracks generally attributed to tritylodonts or similar derived non-mammalian therapsids are known from Lower Jurassic formations of Capitol Reef National Park, Colorado National Monument, Dinosaur National Monument, Glen Canyon National Recreation Area, and Zion National Park. Burrows that may have been dug by non-mammalian or mammalian therapsids have been reported from Canyonlands National Park, Curecanti National Recreation Area, and Dinosaur National Monument. -

Austin such a rain forest that Chris Austin, assistant curator of herpetology at LSU’s Museum Curator of Herpetology of Natural Science, recently discovered a new species of lizard while conducting field research in Borneo….The world’s rain forests, and their wealth of species, are under Robb T. siege, shrinking dramatically each day because of development.
