Big Fish Theory is Vince Staples' second studio album and was released on June 23, 2017. There is a theory that fish only grow to the size of their tank. So the Big Fish Theory pertains to someone who is capable of much bigger things, but is trapped inside the fish tank someone else put them in and therefore will only grow in accordance with their limits. However, in a pre-release interview with Vulture, Vince was questioned about the albums title and its true meaning: So the Big Fish in the title of the album. Ive got a couple ideas what that might mean Youre not going to get it right. Big Fish Theory is the second full-length album by American hip-hop artist Vince Staples. The album received widespread acclaim from critics, and debuted at number 16 on the US Billboard 200. Featuring an avant-garde. Vincent Jamal Staples born July 2, 1993 is an American rapper and actor from the Ramona Park area of North Long Beach, California. He is a member of the hip hop trio Cutthroat Boyz alongside fellow Californian rappers Aston Matthews and Joey Fatts. Staples was once a close associate of Odd Future, in particular Mike G and Earl Sweatshirt. He is currently signed to Blacksmith Records, ARTium Recordings and Def Jam Recordings. Album 2017 12 Songs. This the future. In fact, hes in multiple time zones here. Delivered in his fluent, poetic flow, the lyrical references reach back to 16th- century composer Louis Bourgeois, while BagBak captures the stark contrasts of Staples present I pray for new McLarensPray the police dont come blow me down because of my complexion. With trap hi-hats sprayed across 70s funk basslines 745 and Bon Iver fused into UK garage beats Crabs in a Bucket , the future is as bold as it is bright. His sophomore album, Big Fish Theory, peers into the fishbowl of the fragile rap ecosystem and considers how rappers are perceived and perceive themselves, as he puts it. The result is a sleek rave-rap record that casually probes celebrity and class, a release that is half celebration of rap stardom and half critique of the often toxic culture it breeds. Staples is as clever as ever, but now the beats travel faster than his racing mind. Songs on Big Fish Theory dont operate the way were accustomed to Vince Staples songs operating. Staples has long traded on incisive and detail-oriented reporting, centering his observations and occupying all space in the minds eye. Genre: Hip Hop. Big Fish Theory is one of the most ambitious, dazzling hip-hop albums of 2017 so far neck-and-neck with Kendricks DAMN. Full Review. Best of 2017. Worst of 2017. Big Fish Theory followed 2016's excellent Prima Donna EP. With his 2014 powerful and greasy seven-song Hell Can Wait EP of exclusively live from the street dark hip hop, Vince Staples showed from the get-go that he was to be counted on as a future star by perfectly narrating the daily lives of outlaws. Eight months later, his first album Summertime '06 confirmed this first impression and was considered as one of the best rap albums of 2015. The following summer, Staples took it one step further with his Prima Donna EP made up of seven new ultra-dark snapshots of his City of Angels (but not only…), in which his flow and lyrics shine at every turn. Most importantly, this EP showed that the rapper knew how to reinvent himself, to the extent of collaborating with British artist James Blake on two titles… In the last few years, gangsta-rap California and its derivatives have provided a wonderfully renewed cast (from Kendrick Lamar to Schoolboy Q, YG or even DJ Mustard, the stylistic range is particularly broad), even though the main ingredients remain the same (dope, guns, sex, alcohol and unemployment). In his own distinctive way, Vince Staples reinterprets all of these rehashed conventions and gives them a unique modern feel. The street may remain the same, but its actors know how to reinvent themselves. With Big Fish Theory , which splashes down on Summer 2017, the MC from Long Beach gives us anything but a Summertime ‘06 rehash. It’s rather a natural extension or even an evolution of Prima Donna . This second album, with out-of-this-world sounds, sails through fully assumed electro seas. Minimalist sounds, sometimes edging towards Detroit’s original techno. Supported by very unique tinkers (Zack Sekoff, SOPHIE, Jimmy Edgar, GTA and even Flume!), Vince Staples and his unique story telling dive into the meanders of unprecedented sound architecture. In Alyssa Interlude , he throws in an interview of Amy Winehouse, his idol, with a sample of the Temptations’ I Wish It Would Rain . Further on, Damon Albarn lays his voice on Love Can Be… and Bon Iver’s Justin Vernon lends his lyrics to Crabs In A Bucket . Big Fish Theory is filled with these more or less unexpected moments. In Homage for instance, Staples goes full on into clubbing. Obviously, the album features other prestigious albeit less surprising guests: A$AP Rocky in SAMO , Ray J, Ty Dolla Sign, Kučka, Juicy J in Big Fish , Kilo Kish, and of course the inevitable Kendrick Lamar in Yeah Right . This album leaves you stunned of an orgy of ideas that Staples was somewhat able to channel and give order to. In this regard, Big Fish Theory isn’t a child’s toy, but rather the brilliant manifest of an artist who cares little about genre conventions and makes his own rules. © MZ/Qobuz. HIPNESS, HYBRIDITY, AND “NEO-BOHEMIAN” HIP-HOP: RETHINKING EXISTENCE IN THE AFRICAN DIASPORA A Dissertation Presented to the Faculty of the Graduate School of Cornell University in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy by Maxwell Lewis Williams August 2020 © 2020 Maxwell Lewis Williams HIPNESS, HYBRIDITY, AND “NEO-BOHEMIAN” HIP-HOP: RETHINKING EXISTENCE IN THE AFRICAN DIASPORA Maxwell Lewis Williams Cornell University 2020 This dissertation theorizes a contemporary hip-hop genre that I call “neo-bohemian,” typified by rapper Kendrick Lamar and his collective, Black Hippy. I argue that, by reclaiming the origins of hipness as a set of hybridizing Black cultural responses to the experience of modernity, neo- bohemian rappers imagine and live out liberating ways of being beyond the West’s objectification and dehumanization of Blackness. In turn, I situate neo-bohemian hip-hop within a history of Black musical expression in the United States, Senegal, Mali, and South Africa to locate an “aesthetics of existence” in the African diaspora. By centering this aesthetics as a unifying component of these musical practices, I challenge top-down models of essential diasporic interconnection. Instead, I present diaspora as emerging primarily through comparable responses to experiences of paradigmatic racial violence, through which to imagine radical alternatives to our anti-Black global society. Overall, by rethinking the heuristic value of hipness as a musical and lived Black aesthetic, the project develops an innovative method for connecting the aesthetic and the social in music studies and Black studies, while offering original historical and musicological insights into Black metaphysics and studies of the African diaspora.

66 ANNUAL CRITICS POLL JAZZ ARTIST JAZZ GROUP THERE’S SOMETHING PARTICULARLY APT ABOUT VIJAY IYER’S ACADEMIC TITLES AT HARVARD UNIVERSITY, WHERE HE’S BEEN TEACHING SINCE 2014: Franklin D. and Florence Rosenblatt Professor of the Arts and Graduate Advisor in Creative Practice and Critical Inquiry. Yes, the endowed chair is nice, but “professor of the arts” and “advisor in creative practice” seem to sum up the man. It’s fitting that the terminology here is not “jazz studies” or “theory and practice,” but rather, “the arts” and “critical inquiry.” For Iyer—winner of the 2018 DownBeat Critics Poll categories Jazz Artist of the Year and Jazz Group (for his namesake sextet)—jazz doesn’t exist in isolation. Which is another reason why the appointment at Harvard, with its core liberal arts program, suits the 46-year-old pianist’s particular take on jazz, on music, on the arts and on the world. A child of immigrants, and the winner of multiple accolades—including a handful of previous DownBeat Critics Poll wins with his longstanding trio (with bassist Stephan Crump and drummer Marcus Gilmore) and a 2013 MacArthur “Genius” Fellowship— Iyer began his academic career as a scientist. He was a physics and math major as an undergraduate at Yale, and his Ph.D. thesis at the University of California, Berkeley, was titled, “Microstructures of Feel, Macrostructures of Sound: Embodied Cognition in West African and African-American Musics.” So his pedagogical inclination is toward diversity, and his expansive attitude toward jazz is second nature. 24 DOWNBEAT AUGUST 2018 AUGUST 2018 DOWNBEAT 25 Jimmy & Dena Katz “This isn’t a school of music,” Iyer says, sitting read a black author or maybe they’ve never had learn how to hear in different ways and learn in his basement office in the Harvard Music a black teacher.” On the other hand, “I also have how to accommodate other perspectives.

OUTKAST’D AND CLAIMIN’ TRUE: THE LANGUAGE OF SCHOOLING AND EDUCATION IN THE SOUTHERN HIPHOP COMMUNITY OF PRACTICE by JOYCELYN A. WILSON (Under the direction of Judith Preissle) ABSTRACT The hiphop community of practice encompasses a range of aesthetic values, norms, patterns, and traditions. Because of its growth over the last three decades, the community has come to include regionallyspecific networks linked together by community members who engage in meaningful practices and experiences. Expressed through common language ideologies, these practices contribute to the members’ communal and individual identity while simultaneously providing platforms to articulate social understandings. Using the constructs of community of practice and social networks, this research project is an interpretive study grounded primarily in the use of lyrics and interviews to investigate the linguistic patterns and language norms of hip hop’s southern network, placing emphasis on the Atlanta, Georgia southern hiphop network. The two main goals are to gain an understanding of the role of school in the cultivation of the network and identify the network’s relationship to schooling and education. The purpose is to identify initial steps for implementing a hiphop pedagogy in curriculum and instruction.
