Changing colors, temperatures, and obese muskies will soon be upon us. Or maybe just a 40 Vice President/Communications, Jay Zahn pounder…this leads me to my next thought which is positive thinking and goal setting. Some years ago I thought to myself “I would like to be President of Muskies Inc by the Phone: 920-660-7655 Email: [email protected] age of thirty.” At the time this was a very ambitious thought, but I visualized and focused on Treasurer, Kathy Goon the idea. Seven years later I missed that mark by about a month or so. Not bad by anyone’s standards. So now, as president I am focusing our energy in a positive direction. We really Phone: 419-945-2940 Email: [email protected] have a lot of a lot of good things to come on the horizon. The idea here is to create a monthly forum where chapters can speak in real-time with me and the rest of the Tom Betka . .2010 executive committee. I think this will continue to evolve into a tool that we can all use and Dale Vercauteren . .2010 learn from; it will help us exchange ideas and address issues that arise. As we move into a Bob Timme . .2010 regional model it will be more important than ever to keep the lines of communication open, which will aid us in the maintenance of our political stance on muskie related issues. Jim Shannon . .2010 In closing I would like to leave you with a couple of songs. For the younger crowd Axl Gerald Bucholtz . .2010 Rose once sang “I don’t worry about nothing, no, because worrying’s a waste of my time.” Adam Walsh . .2011 Now I am not suggesting you follow the lead of Guns and Roses, but worrying does imply some negativity, and considering they sold out coliseums worldwide I think there is some Jay Zahn . .2011 wisdom buried in their lyrics. Fred Brogle . .2011 Conversely, for the older crowd, I would like to leave you singing “It’s Only Just Begun,” Brett Knight . .2011 by the Carpenters. It is a very positive and uplifting song; but it may just get stuck in your head for three or four hours…you can thank me when we see each other. HIPNESS, HYBRIDITY, AND “NEO-BOHEMIAN” HIP-HOP: RETHINKING EXISTENCE IN THE AFRICAN DIASPORA A Dissertation Presented to the Faculty of the Graduate School of Cornell University in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy by Maxwell Lewis Williams August 2020 © 2020 Maxwell Lewis Williams HIPNESS, HYBRIDITY, AND “NEO-BOHEMIAN” HIP-HOP: RETHINKING EXISTENCE IN THE AFRICAN DIASPORA Maxwell Lewis Williams Cornell University 2020 This dissertation theorizes a contemporary hip-hop genre that I call “neo-bohemian,” typified by rapper Kendrick Lamar and his collective, Black Hippy. I argue that, by reclaiming the origins of hipness as a set of hybridizing Black cultural responses to the experience of modernity, neo- bohemian rappers imagine and live out liberating ways of being beyond the West’s objectification and dehumanization of Blackness. In turn, I situate neo-bohemian hip-hop within a history of Black musical expression in the United States, Senegal, Mali, and South Africa to locate an “aesthetics of existence” in the African diaspora. By centering this aesthetics as a unifying component of these musical practices, I challenge top-down models of essential diasporic interconnection. Instead, I present diaspora as emerging primarily through comparable responses to experiences of paradigmatic racial violence, through which to imagine radical alternatives to our anti-Black global society. Overall, by rethinking the heuristic value of hipness as a musical and lived Black aesthetic, the project develops an innovative method for connecting the aesthetic and the social in music studies and Black studies, while offering original historical and musicological insights into Black metaphysics and studies of the African diaspora.

#2 With Dr. Todd E.A. Larson VOLUME TWO Riding the Devil’s Horse: Smithwick’s Legendary Lure Dr. Todd E.A. Larson © 2016 One of the joys of summer in Northern Wisconsin was going to the local tackle shops with my dad two or three times per week to pick up bait and scope out the new baits. There were two tackle shops in the unincorporated town of Gordon, Wisconsin, which was less than ten miles from our cabin. Another 15 miles down Highway 53 was Minong, Wisconsin—home at the time to Link Bros., a famed boat seller that is now even more famous for selling Jack Link’s Beef Jerky treats. Anyway, in the town of Minong there were three additional tackle shops. One, which I forget the name of, also had a malt shop. We rarely went into this one, as my dad knew that going in would mean buying malts for all six of his kids. But one fine summer day when I was around eight or nine, he took the whole clan into Minong and we managed to convince him to spring for ice cream. While we were delighting in our delicious frozen treats, my dad retreated to the back of the store where the fishing lures were all placed on a large wire wall rack. I never once saw a box in all the times I frequented this bait shop. Finishing my malt, I went back to join him to stare at the lures. Now, my dad never met a tackle shop he didn't like, and always left with at least three or four baits.

  • “Boat Control”
LUNKER HUNTER SPOONPLUGGERS MEETING JULY 2, 2009 “BOAT CONTROL” Charlie with a nice catfish from Muskegon Lake Charlie Myers talked about “Boat Control”. He mentioned that the difference between an average and exceptional fisherman is the attention to detail that is paid. It was noted that John Bales pays strict attention to important details in his fishing (Spoonplugging Guidelines). Some of the methods of boat control discussed were: 1) Anchoring---This allows for the very accurate depth and speed control, especially for the slower speeds with the use of jump lures. Anchoring and casting should always be done when a fish is caught on the troll to check the area more thoroughly. Anchoring also allows for accurate placement and coverage of medium speed presentations casting Spoonplugs. With wind or current, it is more accurate to anchor the boat at both ends. Reanchoring often is necessary to check an area suspected to have a school of fish. 2) Slow back or forward trolling---Moving slowly backward with live bait or vertical jigging is another way of pinpoint fishing at slow speeds. Also, front mounted electric motors are used to move slowly forward in the same manner. For checking larger area structures at slower speeds, these methods are used while casting jump lures or crankbaits. 3) Controlled drift---Where fish are over a larger area, the wind is used to move the boat through the area using the gas or electric motor on and off to control the drift. With high winds, a drift sock can help slow the drift speed down.

Yes, the endowed chair is nice, but “professor of the arts” and “advisor in creative practice” seem to sum up the man. It’s fitting that the terminology here is not “jazz studies” or “theory and practice,” but rather, “the arts” and “critical inquiry.” For Iyer—winner of the 2018 DownBeat Critics Poll categories Jazz Artist of the Year and Jazz Group (for his namesake sextet)—jazz doesn’t exist in isolation. Which is another reason why the appointment at Harvard, with its core liberal arts program, suits the 46-year-old pianist’s particular take on jazz, on music, on the arts and on the world. A child of immigrants, and the winner of multiple accolades—including a handful of previous DownBeat Critics Poll wins with his longstanding trio (with bassist Stephan Crump and drummer Marcus Gilmore) and a 2013 MacArthur “Genius” Fellowship— Iyer began his academic career as a scientist. He was a physics and math major as an undergraduate at Yale, and his Ph.D. thesis at the University of California, Berkeley, was titled, “Microstructures of Feel, Macrostructures of Sound: Embodied Cognition in West African and African-American Musics.” So his pedagogical inclination is toward diversity, and his expansive attitude toward jazz is second nature. 24 DOWNBEAT AUGUST 2018 AUGUST 2018 DOWNBEAT 25 Jimmy & Dena Katz “This isn’t a school of music,” Iyer says, sitting read a black author or maybe they’ve never had learn how to hear in different ways and learn in his basement office in the Harvard Music a black teacher.” On the other hand, “I also have how to accommodate other perspectives.

  • Fishing Report #32 Pine and Pewaukee Lakes with Dee and a Pewaukee Flashback
Fishing Report #32 Pine and Pewaukee Lakes with Dee and a Pewaukee Flashback 10-21-12 Synopsis: Weather was sunny and pleasant with a high near 60. Water temperature was 52 degrees on Pewaukee, and 49 on Pine, indicating that the fall turnover has already taken place on both lakes. We started by fishing Pine for walleye but only got a few bite-offs from pike. We started fishing Pewaukee by casting and soaking suckers and finished up trolling crankbaits and spinners. We had no action at Pewaukee. I had planned on taking a friend out for musky but he had to cancel due to other obligations. Fortunately, my buddy Dee was looking for a partner as well so he offered to take me out in his boat, which I eagerly accepted. It had been a few years since we fished together. Dee is an accomplished multi-species angler and while walleye fishing may be his first love, he enjoys fishing for musky as well. In fact, I caught my first musky on my first trip to Pewaukee Lake with Dee about thirty years ago. Dee was working at a parking garage when I first met him. I was unemployed at the time and had to check in at the local unemployment office. I left my car across the street at the parking garage and when I went to pick it up, I noticed a dog-eared copy of a new fishing publication, In’Fisherman magazine on the desk. I asked the man if he liked to fish, which was quite apparent.
