It’s the most popular outdoor activity; an important mode of transport and improves health and wellbeing. Getting out into the countryside is in decline yet, leisure walking fuelled by the desire to improve physical and mental health has increased. We want to reconnect with the natural environment, but how we do this has changed in the last 10 years. Visits to green spaces have become closer to home for shorter periods, where engagement has been more with urban green spaces rather than the countryside. Does this mean that walking in the countryside is less desirable? On the contrary, urban parks may be easy, accessible and convenient yet, according to Natural England 2019 - Monitoring of Engagement with the Natural Environment study, the urban experience scored low on positive outcome (the way it made people feel).
