Signature ________________ Curswan Andrews iii ABSTRACT The Lepilemuridae and the Cheirogaleidae, according to recent molecular reconstructions, share a more recent common ancestor than previously thought. Further phylogenetic reconstructions have indicated that body size evolution in this clade was marked by repeated dwarfing events that coincided with changes in the environment. I aimed to investigate the morphological implications of changes in body size within the Lepilemur-cheirogaleid clade, testing four predictions. Together with Dr. Couette, I collected data on the overall palate shape and predicted that shape is likely to be influenced by several factors including phylogeny, body size and diet. Geometric morphometric analyses revealed that, although a strong phylogenetic signal was detected, diet had the major effect on palate shape. In a similar vein, when examining the arterial circulation patterns in these taxa, I predicted that changes in body size would result in changes and possible reductions in arterial size, particularly the internal carotid artery (ICA) and stapedial artery (SA). -

They were at that time, even by Vietnamese scientists or foreign primate experts, considered not very important. They were abundant in the trade and there was little concern about their wild status. It has often been the fate of animals that are considered common not to be considered worth detailed studies. But working with confiscated pygmy lorises we discovered a number of interesting facts about them. They seasonally changed the pelage colour, they showed regular weight variations, and they did not eat in certain times of the year. And I met people interested in lorises and told them, what I had observed and realized these facts were not known. So I started to collect data more or less to proof what we had observed at the centre. Due to the daily veterinary tasks data collection was rather randomly and unfocussed. But the more we got to know about the pygmy lorises, the more interesting it became. The answer to one question immediately generated a number of consecutive questions. -

FISHER Department of Entomology University of California Davis, CA 95616, U.S.A. e-mail: [email protected] ABSTRACT.- Fifty-two ant genera have been recorded from the Malagasy region, of which 48 are estimated to be indigenous. Four of these genera are endemic to Madagascar and 1 to Mauritius. In Madagascar alone,41 out of 45 recorded genera are estimated to be indigenous. Currently, there are 318 names of described species-group taxa from Madagascar and 381 names for the Malagasy region. The ant fauna of Madagascar, however,is one of the least understoodof al1 biogeographic regions: 2/3of the ant species may be undescribed. Associated with Madagascar's long isolation from other land masses, the level of endemism is high at the species level, greaterthan 90%. The level of diversity of ant genera on the island is comparable to that of other biogeographic regions.On the basis of generic and species level comparisons,the Malagasy fauna shows greater affinities to Africathan to India and the Oriental region. Thestriking gaps in the taxonomic composition of the fauna of Madagascar are evaluatedin the context of island radiations.The lack of driver antsin Madagascar may have spurred the diversification of Cerapachyinae and may have permitted the persistenceof other relic taxa suchas the Amblyoponini.
