TORERO STADIUM -THE HOME OF SAN DIEGO SOCCER-

Torero Stadium, home to USD soccer and football, also served home to the San Diego Spirit of the former Women's United Soccer Association for three seasons. With that, the Torero Stadium received numerous up grades that make it one of the best facilities of its size on the west coast. New seating behind the east end zone, as well as on the south side of the field, expands the stadium seating capacity to 7,000 seats. Torero Stadium also received a new grass turf, new lighting and sound system, and additional press box space. A little over a year ago the field was widened by 7 yards; it is now 72 yards wide for soccer.

Torero Stadium has also been the host site for numerous men's and women's NCAA Postseason Tourna ments.

USO LOOKING FoR RETURN TRIP To THE COLLEGE Cup TouRNAMENT

A new era officially begins for the USO women's soccer program as five-year assistant coach Ada Greenwood takes command of a Torero program he has helped qualify for NCAA Tournament play in each of the past four seasons. Greenwood fields an experienced San Diego squad loaded with talent in the form of nine returning starters. The senior leader ship and established tradition of San Diego success, has the Toreros picked to finish fourth among the league's coaches in the 2003 preseason polls. The toughest challenge for San Diego lies in one of the nation's most difficult schedules. The 2003 slate for USO pits the Toreros against seven preseason NSCAA/ Adidas Top-25 programs. The Torero faithful will be privileged to most of the action as No. 1 Santa Clara, No. 5 UCLA, No .13 Pepperdine and No. 20 Clemson grace USO' s home schedule. If USO' s track record at home holds true, the visitors will have their hands full. The Toreros have a history of dominating visit ing teams in Torero Stadium, posting a 41-14-3 overall record at home since 1997. Sophomore offensive standout Greenwood will field a team that returns a number of past let Michelle Rowe ter-winners including all-conference senior defensive players Cristina Romero (Bonita, CA) and Alexis Obeji (Encinitas, CA). The Torero defense should be one of the team's assets as standout junior Andrea Keesling (Thousand Oaks, CA) and all-Pac 10 transfer Kaitlyn Pruett figure to play major roles, complementing Obeji and Romero in the Torero backfield. USO' s defense is anchored by two proven goalkeepers. Sophomore Natalie Bobbitt (Rancho Bernardo, CA) stepped in and posted four shutouts and saved 40 shots in relief of starter Libby Bassett (Seattle, WA) who was sidelined by a mid-sea son injury in 2002. San Diego welcomes back its entire offense, minus 12 points from gradu ated senior Val Strocco. The USO at tack outscored its opposition 40-28 a year ago-, registering 116 points en Ada Greenwood takes over as the head coach of route to winning 11 games, high USD's women's soccer program lighted by four matches of four plus goals.

FouR YEARS IN A Row, ToRERos ADVANCE INTO NCAA's

by Amanda Piechowski

As the University of San Diego women's soccer team entered the 2002 season, the prognostications had the Toreros finish ing in the bottom half of the league and most likely missing the NCAA Tournament for the first time in three seasons. Although San Diego returned 13 letter-winners and wel comed six newcomers, they entered the year without seven graduated seniors, including record-setting goalkeeper Leila Duren, team captains Gina Poltl and Claire Currie, and of fensive threats Stephanie Barnier and Casey Loveland. They also faced a difficult game schedule, with matches against "" ~/ ....~ .. JI'" powerhouses Arizona State and USC, defending national ✓J champions Santa Clara, and top-ranked UCLA. With all fac I tors considered the critics picked the Toreros to finish fifth in the West Coast Conference, when, in fact, they had not placed lower than fourth since 1994. Sixth-year head coach John Cossaboon welcomed the chal lenge, commenting before the season began, "Those are hard games to begin with. Add the road contests, and yes it be comes more difficult, but those are challenges we need to step up to and overcome."

The returning players showed their strength and experience as well, with sophomore midfielder Brooke Roby leading the squad with four goals in conference play. The culmination of the 2002 season resulted in the Toreros' fourth straight NCAA appearance. The women traveled to USC's McAllister Field for a much-anticipated rematch; the Toreros played the Women of Troy to a

scoreless tie earlier in the year. This time, however, USC would defeat the Toreros 1-0 in overtime. Four Torero women received West Coast Conference ac colades. Brooke Roby and junior defender Cristina Romero were both selected to the WCC All-Conference Second Team, with junior and senior midfielders Marie Claude-Henry and Val Strocco receiving Honorable Men tions. The Toreros flourished in a season that was thought by many to be a potential flounder. In the face of adversity, the team stepped up to the challenges before them. With this kind of determination and resolve, 2003 should prove to be just as successful.

The WCC is proud to enter its twelfth season of women's soccer. USD ACADEMIC SUPPORT

T he USO Athletic Academic Support program is designed to promote the academic development of student-athletes. The primary objecti ve is to offer the necessary resources for the academic success of student-athletes as they work to earn their degree. Academic Support services are designed to enhance the s tudent-athlete's overall coll egiate experi ence and encourage development and attainment of academic and ca reer goals.

The Uni versity of San Diego's Academic Support efforts are led b y Shaney Fink who begins her third year as USD's Academic Support Coordinator. Fink was a standout volleyball player in the 90's, and in 1999 she was on the Volleyball coaching staff as an assistant, helping the Toreros to a 23-6 record and a second round finish in the NCAA Tournament. Prior to USO she gained coaching experience at the high school, college and international levels for five years. She capped off a stellar collegiate ca reer (1990-93) at Cal Berkeley and won selection to the All-PAC Ten Decade Team. Fink completed her B.A ., graduating in Social Science from Berkeley in 1994.

All USO student athletes have access to advising, tutoring a nd mentoring services. The mentoring program, Access, was developed in 1999 and teams a graduate student in the Counseling program with an athlete who would like to enhance study skills, learn about campus resources and receive guid- ance on goal development and attainment. Student-athletes also h ave access to a quiet area where they ca n study or work in the computer center. In addition, student-athletes are e ncouraged to utilize th e campus learning centers including the Writing, Math and Logic Centers as well as to take advantage of the resources availabl e to them in the Career Center, Counseling Center and Computer L abs.

USO is a member of the NCAA CHAMPS/ LIF E SKILLS program. This program was created to enhance the total d evelopment of student athletes on NCAA Di vision 1 campuses. The purpose of our program is to assist student-athletes in meeting this challenge by offering tutoring, advising, mentoring and a quiet environment to study. The academic support program is designed to assist students in adjusting to life at USO and developing sound academic and career plans. By promoting a phi , ~ ~~ losophy of individual responsibility, which encourages each student-athlete to value their educational experience, the academic support program assists each athlete to realize their full potential." Shaney Fink

The CHAMPS/ Life Skills program emphasizes five core commitment areas: CHAMPS/Life Skills. * Commitment to Academic Development /;~~ ,..- * Commitment to Athletic D evelopment * Commitment t o Personal Development * Commitment to Career Development * Commitment to Service

Founded by the G reeks as Complutum, the village was later renamed Al Kala (the Castle) by the Moslems. Christians recaptured the village centuries later and founded a university, the University of Alcala, whose build ings became the inspiration for USD's style. Both institutions are located on a hill overlooking a river valley.
