But for that once-in-a-lifetime, romantic Out of Africa–style safari experience, South Africa’s fourth-largest reserve can’t be beat. If you’d rather spot the Big Five without professional help, do a self-drive safari in Pi- lanesberg National Park. The most accessible park in the country is cheaper than Madikwe, and still has 7000 animals packed into its extinct volcano confines. Plus it’s less than three hours’ drive from Jo’burg. When you’ve had your fill betting on finding rhino, switch to cards at the opulent Sun City casino complex down the road. The final component of the province’s big attraction trifecta is the southern hemisphere’s answer to Las Vegas: a shame- lessly gaudy, unabashedly kitsch and downright delicious place to pass an afternoon. Madikwe, Pilanesberg and Sun City may be the North-West Province’s heavyweight at- tractions, but there are more here than the province’s ‘Big Three’.

    The Sustainable World 15 Determining the vitality of urban centres J. E. Drewes & M. van Aswegen North West University, Potchefstroom Campus, South Africa Abstract This paper will attempt to provide an encompassing Index of Vitality for urban centres. The Vitality Index’s© goal is to enable measurement of the general economic, social, physical, environmental, institutional and spatial performance of towns within a regional framework, ultimately reflecting the spatial importance of the urban centre. Towns have been measured in terms of numerous indicators, mostly in connection with social and economic conditions, over an extended period of time. The lack of suitable spatial indicators is identified as a significant shortcoming in the measurement of urban centres. This paper proposes the utilisation of a comprehensive index to measure the importance of an urban centre within a specific region. The Vitality Index© is consequently tested in a study area situated in the Northern Cape Province, South Africa. This study contributes in a number of ways to the measurement of urban centres, i.e. the shortcomings that are identified for the urban centres can be addressed by goal-specific policy initiatives, comprising a set of objectives and strategies to correct imbalances. The Vitality Index© also provides a basis for guiding national and regional growth policies, in the identification of urban centres with sustainable growth potential and vitality. Conclusion 2 Purpose To brief the Select Committee on Security and Justice, on the progress of Amnesty 2019/20 and to seek support for another amnesty for a period of six (6) months. 3 Background Firearm Amnesty was approved by Parliament on 21 November 2019 for the period of six (6) from 1 December 2019 to 31 May 2020. The amnesty was premised on the following Five (5) objectives: . To reduce the number of illegally possessed firearms in circulation in South Africa. To provide firearm owners with the opportunity to hand in unwanted firearms. To prevent crime and violence and to promote safety. To address the fundamental causes of crime in order to effectively protect our communities. To ensure people living in South Africa feel and have no fear of crime. The partial achievement of the set objectives and numerous requests from members of the public prompted a submission for another amnesty. The presentation will include the comparison of amnesty 2019/2020 with the previous amnesties.

    CHAPTER ONE: “CHIEF MOLEMA AND THE FOUNDATIONS OF TSHIDI HISTORY” Relatively little information remains of the first Chief Molema’s life, yet the vital choices he made and the independent town he built made him vital to the history of the Molopo region. But for Chief Molema, this thesis argues, his grandson might not have interested himself in history at all. This chapter reconstructs aspects of his life that have been documented and to which Dr Molema would return, when attempting to re-create and explain his community’s history. This story begins some 83 years after the old Chief’s death. In 1964, near the end of Dr Seetsele Modiri Molema’s life, historian Dan Johns interviewed him in Mafikeng.1 Johns highlighted his recent political life in the African National Congress, skirting the doctor’s youth and his family’s eminence in the (then) small British Bechuanaland town, Mafikeng. Likewise, he skimmed over Molema’s education in the Eastern Cape, Scotland and Ireland. Dan Johns [DJ]: What was your early education? Dr Seetsele Modiri Molema [SMM]: I was born here in Mafeking and went to school here at the Mission School until Standard 4, then to the Mission School in Hazeltown (?) [Johns seems not to have known about Healdtown].2 Went to Lovedale for Matric, and then went overseas. My father was keen on education, he was the first teacher of the people here. It comprises the three local municipalities of Gamagara, Ga- Segonyana and Joe Morolong, and 186 towns and settlements, of which the majority (80%) are villages.
