As a previous Boundary Walk member of the LAF, The Mayor has particular interest in the group and the good work that has been achieved, for instance the ROWIP and Patcham Open Access. The Mayor’s Walk on 30th April 2017: The idea of the Mayor’s walk began with the previous Mayor, Ann Meadows and her boundary walk (a longer route that included the coastal area). The idea behind this walk is to create a shorter boundary route that can be achieved comfortably in a day (roughly 27km). The walk can also be done in shorter sections (accessed by public transport). It starts from Saltdean Oval, goes through Castle Hill, Falmer, Stanmer, Patcham Open Access, Waterhall and ends up at Emmaus in Portslade. There will be refreshment opportunities at Stanmer House, Waterhall Golf Club and Emmaus. (Perhaps a shuttle bus from Emmaus back to Saltdean for those that parked there?) Currently awaiting the leaflets to be produced by Rise – so that people can start the online registration process.

We had a lovely end of half term Harvest Festival assembly led by some of our senior students; Amelie Tadd (Charity Rep), Nina Kreel (Head of School Council), Louie Glanvill (Head Boy) and Olivia Pavlides (Head Girl). Thank you so much for your very kind donations, you were all so generous and we were able to donate a large variety of food to the Hangleton and West Blatchington Food Bank. Amelie Tadd met with 2 representatives from the Food Bank to hand over our donations. We have since had some correspondence from them thanking us for our contributions: “A huge thank you from the volunteers of the Hangleton & West Blatchington Foodbank for the generous donations made by pupils and parents of Deepdene School. We support an average of 35 people a week (14 of those children) and your contributions will really help those people in our local community who are struggling to provide food for themselves and their families. For more information about what we do visit www.hangletonfoodbank.org” Zoe Smith Co-ordinator Hangleton & West Blatchington Foodbank Mrs James has been busy preparing our very own Internet Safety day which will allow pupils to participate in activities related to ‘Keeping Safe on Line’. Foreword – Pullman Attendant by Bert Hollick, 1991 In 1935, fifteen year old Bert Hollick signed on at Brighton Station for his first shift on a Pullman Train. Working on the midnight shift from Victoria to Brighton including the famous Brighton Belle, he learned to ladle soup from a tureen at seventy-five miles per hour and serve a three-course lunch in a speedy fifty-eight minutes. Bert’s life story is told in a style that conveys wonderfully the atmosphere of the Pullman Cars, as well as providing interesting factual details of railway life. Bert worked at a time when a twelve to fourteen hour day was commonplace, and wages were a meagre £2 a week, despite providing a luxury service to everyday travellers.

We identify issues and plan the solutions. Our next GIG meet-up is: TOPIC: Diversity in Care Needs - from home care, direct payments and supported living to residential and nursing care WHERE: Friend’s Meeting House, Ship Street, Brighton, BN1 1AF WHEN: Thursday 3 October, 2pm – 4:30pm As you know, the Get Involved Group carries out engagement work with disabled adults, adults with long-term health conditions, carers, friends and family and other service providers. The engagement project this autumn is to gather as much information as we can about the diverse care needs across the city, focusing on adults under 70 with physical and neurological impairments. The information will be fed into the council’s Needs Assessment, so this is a great opportunity to have your say. We also hope to have a guest speaker – to be announced! We’ll have our usual 30 minutes break in the middle, a good chance to catch up, and share information. Meetings are open to all disabled people in the city, whether or not you've been a part of the Get Involved Group before. Friends, family, carers and PAs are also welcome! It has been a privilege to serve this remarkable institution in Tthis time - a period which has encompassed quite extraordinary change, not least in the newly merged boroughs of Brighton and Hove being declared as a city. Such municipal status has been emblematic of an energy for development, on many fronts, that ushers in myriad schemes for building and conversion which the Regency Society and its officers have a distinct role to play in accessing the architectural merits and sensitivities of such change and growth. These are exciting, if challenging, times. The built environment of Brighton and Hove has emerged in phases of distinct and notable styles - from our eponymous Regency, through Victorian and Edwardian epochs, significant elements of 20th century modernism, the bold and sweeping educational expansion of the 1960s, which brought us the University of Sussex, and now a much heightened general interest in new architecture, and a revived celebratory status for a range of individual architects and their practices.
