THE DOCUMENTARY:THE REAL STORY OF ROAR Through close consideration of the astounding original archive and critically candid conversations with the surviving members of the cast and crew, this one-off documentary will seek to reveal the real story behind ‘ ROAR ’ . It will pick over the disaster plagued production process and examine the ravaged relationships of the individuals involved, in an attempt to understand the misplaced motivations of this foolhardy filmmaking family, who very nearly let their love of big cats tear them apart. The finished film of ‘ ROAR ’ is at times funny, often shocking and gloriously chaotic, unsurprising when you consider that every big cat featured alongside the (often terrified looking) actors is a living, breathing, biting, roaring reality. An astounding fact when viewed through the eyes of 21st century audiences, who’ve become so used to the simulated snarling of contemporary CGI beasts. It also makes it entirely unsurprising that 70 members of the cast and crew were injured during the making of the film : with seven major incidents, two almost fatal accidents, and countless scrapes and near-misses. Noel Marshall suffered gangrene and multiple puncture wounds, Tippi Hedren had her leg broken after being bucked by an elephant, Melanie needed facial reconstruction surgery after a swipe from a lion’s claws narrowly missed her eye, while cinematographer and future ‘Speed’ director Jan De Bont was scalped, requiring over 200 stitches (see picture). In total ‘ ROAR ’ reportedly cost $17million to make – largely funded by Noel and the surprise success of ‘The Exorcist’. However when it was eventually released in cinemas in 1981 this big cat B-movie barely made $2million at the US box office. Unsurprisingly both professional and personal relationships were frayed by the end, with Tippi and Noel filing for divorce soon after the film’s release. Most of those involved in the making of the movie have since expressed regret - verging on disbelief - that any of it happened at all. Although Noel Marshall died in 2010, his son John has since hinted at the familial tensions during filming: “ Dad was a f–king a–hole to do that to his family .” Melanie has rarely spoken of her experiences of making the film, while Tippi – in a surprising twist – went on to continue to live with lions. An avid animal rights campaigner, in 1983 she founded the ‘Shambala Preserve’ at her home just outside L.A, which not only provided a sanctuary for the retired cast of ‘ ROAR ’, but also for countless other rescued endangered wild animals. Now 86, Tippi continues to live and work at the preserve, lobbying for changes in the law regarding the breeding and trading of exotic wildlife, as well as avidly urging fellow fans of big cats not to follow in her families footsteps: ‘ Some people will tell you lions are wonderful pets - and it’s an absolute lie. ’ 5 Copyright © Marble Films 2019 [email protected] Contact - Sacha Mirzoeff THE DOCUMENTARY:THE REAL STORY OF ROAR For the first time ever this revealing documentary will seek to understand what drove one family to go from the tinsel-town eccentricity of living with one (relatively) domesticated lion, to pursuing the downright absurd and overtly dangerous dream of making a live- action movie directed and starring themselves and over a hundred big cats. The real story of ‘ ROAR ’ has never been fully revealed and yet, beneath the broken bones and multiple puncture wounds, there is a tale to be told which so many of us can relate to. At its heart, this is a story about our human love of animals and the lengths we will go to prove that they are like us, that they can understand us, and that they can love us back. The mistake that the makers of this madcap, misadventure of a movie made was to think that they could ever truly tame a wild creature; they believed that they were safe, that they were in control, even when dozens of lions, tigers, panthers and leopards were rampaging around their home. ‘ THE MOVIE THAT MAULED MY FAMILY ’ will be an entertaining and enlightening examination of the human-animal relationship like you have never seen before. Told by the people who were there and brought to life by astounding archive; this documentary will be a sensational yet sensitive reflection on the lessons that can be learnt from the making of ‘ We were dealing ROAR ’: the most dangerous movie ever made. with animals that we psychopaths. They have no conscience or remorse genes, and they will kill you for their dinner.
