Autumn Newsletter – September 2019 Tel: 01729 825 783 Dear Member, I hope you and your family is fit and well. I write to inform you that the next Social Function of the Keighley & District Branch of NARPO will take place at 7.30pm on Thursday 3rd October 2019 at our new home situated at the Presidential Suite, Cougarmania Ltd, Cougar Park, Royd Ings Avenue, Keighley BD21 3RF. (We have moved from Steeton Hall at Steeton, Keighley). This function will be a general ‘get–together’, to catch up with old friends & colleagues and spin a few tales. Free pie & peas are provided and there will be no raffle. For catering purposes, notify me if you are attending.

Tony Hennigan will update the meeting on the major points discussed at the NARPO Conference on Friday 6th September 2019. These will include:

A Review of the Year, presented by the Chief Executive Steve Edwards, was given to the Conference, in which he outlined the past 12 months had marked a significant period in our history as we had reach our 100-year anniversary. Our membership continues to increase and we now serve over 91,400 retired police officers, police widows and widowers. We are now the largest public sector pension organization in the country. Steve went on to say that we have an excellent staff at NARPO HQ which includes Helen Morgan (Financial Controller), Angela Calvert (Supersleuth Co-ordinator), Rachel Stairmand (Accounts Administrator)and Clare Marsden-Eastburn and Julia Mullen (Office Staff).

The Presidential Address was by Brian Burduss. The most entertaining guest speaker was Holly Lynch MP for Halifax. She was followed by Emma Shakespeare (from Police Mutual) and Chief Constable Andy Rhodes (National Lead for Well-being & Engagement). In the afternoon, the guest speakers included Dr Annette Crisp and Paul Aspinall, speaking about Life, Work and Leisure after the Police.

Motions - There were six motions put forward this year: Motion 1 – Rule Change NEC Representative – Dorset Branch – Carried Motion 2 – Rule Change NEC Representative – Nottinghamshire – Carried Motion 3 – Rule Change Membership – York North Riding – Lost Motion 4 – Relocation of NARPO HQ – Humberside – Remitted Motion 5 – Rule Change Life Membership – Cambridgeshire – Withdrawn Motion 6 – Rule Change Financial Year – Hampshire - Lost

Membership – I am pleased to welcome the following new members since our last newsletter: Martin Jordan, Bill Cunliffe, Bev Ramsey (Police Widow), Keith Gilert, Steve Marshall, Michael Shaw, Byron Sykes, Shirley Thompson (Police Widow), Mark Newton, Derek Callon, Geoff and Tony Durkin. I look forward to seeing them at our future social occasions.

Obituaries – It is with deep regret that I record the following deaths of friends and colleagues: Cyril Thompson, Tommy Atkin and Dave Sands. Condolences were sent to their families on your behalf. You will note that Police Widows/Widowers are able to join NARPO and continue to receive full benefits of the Membership; however, this is not automatic and it will be necessary for Police Widows/Widowers to apply.

President of Rotary – Congratulations to Chris Binns who has been elected President of Bradford Rotary. In Keighley, both Scowen Mogg and Bernard Burke were Presidents of Keighley Rotary Club. A great charitable organization! Last year, the Rotary Club rose over £2,500 for Chris’s Charity – ‘Embrace Child Victims of Crime’. This year they have raised another £1000 to be spent on ‘Children in the Bradford Metropolitan District, which includes Keighley. Any donations will be gratefully received by Chris Binns at 15 Stepping Stones, , Keighley BD20 5UG (Tel. No. 01274-981237).

Christmas Lunch – this year it will be held in the Presidential Suite at Cougarmania Ltd, Cougar Park, Royd Ings Avenue, Keighley BD21 3RF on Sunday 1st December 2019, commencing at 12 noon for 12.30pm. This function has been completely booked up with the capacity of 120+ attending. I require money in advance, so please bring it to the meeting or send it by letter to reach me by Monday, 4th November 2019. The cost of the meal has been subsidized to £20 per person; wine is not inclusive this year. (The Committee thought it fairer for each person to be subsidized in the same way).
