CURATORIAL STATEMENT

In keeping with the gallery’s on-going initiatives around art and the environment, CYNTHIA- REEVES is featuring a new project by noted conceptual artist, Steven Siegel, whose works consistently push the boundaries of how we view the detritus of our day-to-day life. Siegel’s works are created from recycled materials such as newspapers, aluminum cans and plastic bottles, which he recasts into site-based or landform sculptures. Wanting his biodegradable sculptures to have an impact on their surroundings, his works also challenge us to look again at how these discarded elements can be recast into meaningful and documentarian sculptures. Siegel’s work is beautiful. In its inherent beauty, we are pushed to re-visit the recycled papers, the plastic and bits of string, to find within this array of refuse a new coded language of our wasteful culture – in Siegel’s words, “a geological time capsule with its stratifications and layers of visual information.”

Siegel’s ambitious new project, A Puzzle for Alice, will ultimately consist of 160+ panels of historical “data” from his household, in which – due to the marvelous and seemingly spontaneous use of color and texture – the visual information seems to dance across the rows and up the columns of this complicated installation. The installation is so large, it may be impossible to show the entire work in situ; however, the artist has created a photographic montage as an integral part of the overall project, which will be available in the coming months. "I feel this piece is a reflection of how we see the world nowadays—with continuity being broken by lots of bits and bytes”, says Siegel.

As a counterpoise to the Siegel installation, the gallery is showing other works that harken directly to our intrinsic relationship to the natural world: the works of Korean sculptor, JaeHyo Lee, and his visionary use of quotidian materials highlight inherently complex wood end-grains in his dimensional forms; an impressively scaled new work on paper by Canadian printmaker Catherine Farish, whose evocative montage, “Many Moons” suggests a lunar dance in the language of collograph printmaking with found objects; Chinese abstract painter, Lianghong Feng, assumes a technical and cultural synthesis in his luscious canvases, drawing from the legacy of Chinese calligraphy, as he daubs and splashes paint in search of the hidden, natural image; and Rutherford Witthus’ scientific inquiry into how the unfolding of paper mimics the mathematical principles behind the expansion of the universe.

Catherine Farish is constantly inquiring into different ways of looking. Whether she is combing scrapyards for metal parts and computer discards to use as printing objects, re-purposing player piano rolls as surfaces on which she can situate abstract marks, language fragments, or figures, or re-writing a romance on envelopes from the 1940s, she is perennially on the lookout for things that will allow her to complicate both surfaces and the manner in which they are perceived. Hers is a restless sort of gathering. – Robert Enright, art critic and curator

Farish continues to work with found objects; this time with vintage post- industrial photo-etched plates of unknown authorship. These images, juxtaposed with abstract markings, result in a series of narrative monoprints on Japanese paper which elude to obscure and forgotten events.

She has been experimenting with agricultural artifacts such as the circular metal maple syrup sieve (part of an old maple syrup making machine) used in Many Moons. The resulting montage of different “worlds” exemplifies the innovative printmaking techniques Farish is known for.

Farish received a diploma from the Montreal Museum School of Fine Arts and her BFA from Concordia University. She went on to study with a master printer in the French tradition of printmaking. Farish has shown extensively in Europe, Canada, the United States, Mexico and Asia with over forty solo exhibitions and her work can be seen in many collections. She is the recipient of the Grand Prize for Printmaking in Quebec and the Acquisition Award from the City of Montreal. Other awards include the Grand Prize for Printmaking in Québec, the Material Award in the Boston Printmakers Exhibition and several grants, including a residency at the International Art Festival in Asilah Morocco. In 2008 she was inducted into the Royal Canadian Academy of the Arts. The artist lives and works in Montreal, Canada. Lianghong Feng has no concept before starting to work. His paintings result out of the process of painting, out of a dialogue between the artist and the canvas. It is a spontaneous dialogue with questions and answers or a conversation, with beautiful poetic elements: a conversation between poets. Similar to what Gerhard Richter said, “my paintings are smarter than me”, Feng is not considering himself superior towards his works. For twenty years, the dual influences of East and West have manifested in Lianghong Feng’s luscious abstract canvases. His techniques of daubing and splashing paint are the vehicle through which these two disparate traditions are resolved. These dynamic, abstract paintings draw from his cultural roots, including the legacy of Chinese calligraphy.

After a decade residence in New York City, in the 1990s, Feng began distorting the shapes of the urbanscape, in direct reaction to the prevalent graffiti he saw in Brooklyn. This inspired a non-cultural and “irrational” form of painting. He wrote: “I must avoid my pre-existing knowledge and constructs, and enter my personal terra incognita.” While Feng often allows his work on a painting to develop organically and intuitively, he is constantly looking for the “images”, or what he terms the different visual elements of his work, and to elaborate relationships among them. This is part of his process of finding the painting’s artistic perspective, harmony.

Lianghong Feng was recently the subject of a major mid-career retrospective at Beijing’s Inside Out Museum (2011) and the White Box Museum of Art (2013), where his paintings amassed three full floors of exhibition space. Considered one of China’s leading contemporary voices in Abstract Expressionism, his studio is located in the prestigious 798 Art District in Beijing, and he is a frequent exhibitor at the Ullens Center for Contemporary Art (Shanghai). Feng’s international and museum exhibitions include: Brot Hulger Kunstalle (Vienna), Beijing World Art Museum (Beijing), Today Art Museum (Beijing), Yonghe Art Museum (Beijing), Perdue University (Indiana), Yuan Art Museum (Beijing), among others. His works are in the permanent collections of the Dana Farber Institute (Boston), a Fortune 500 Energy Company (Charlotte), White Box Museum of Art (Beijing), among others.

Lee’s early works share the critical mind of land artists who befriend nature and follow the flow of nature. And its true meaning can only be achieved when reverence for nature appears. Even if Lee’s works consumed a tremendous amount of time and labor, the first thing that springs to mind from his works is nature. Nature seems chaotic and violent depending on how it is viewed, but Lee finds the source of autogeny in a sphere. A circle is a figure closely and symbolically related to co-existence, integrity and the found of all beings. When this circle is materialized into a body, it becomes a sphere. Therefore, the symbolic representation that a grain of all livings originating from this basic rounded body is the starting point of spheres which continue to appear in his works. – Choi, Taeman, Art Critic, 2008

JaeHyo Lee has been rethinking and re-envisioning use of quotidian materials for several decades. Rather than dismantling each sculptural component and creating a hybrid aesthetic, Lee’s works emphasize his materials’ essential nature. The trajectory of his current work reveals his refined approach to nature - muse to his ideological and spatial concerns.

Lee’s seminal 20’ sculpture, LOTUS, comprised of wood that is burned, shaped, and hand carved, is currently on view in INFLUX, a public art exhibition in downtown Providence in collaboration with The Avenue Concept and RISD Museum, through 2016. The artist originally debuted the sculpture in New York City’s Union Square Park in the spring of 2013, a collaboration with New York City Parks, the Union Square Association, and CYNTHIA-REEVES, before it traveled to Sarasota, Florida for the annual Season of Sculpture Exhibition in 2014.

JaeHyo Lee graduated from Hong-Ik University in 1992, and is the prizewinner of the Hankook Ilbo Young Artists Award in 1997; the Osaka Triennial Award in 1998; the Kim Sae-Jung Award in 2000; the Sculpture in Woodland Award in 2002; and the Japan Hyogo International Competition Award in 2004. His work is included in the permanent collections of the National Museum of Contemporary Art, Korea; Hyogo Prefecture Museum of Art Japan; Metropolitan Art Museum, South Korea; Busan and the Osaka Contemporary Art Center, Japan. There is a dutiful, yet delightful dimension to Siegel’s work. A great task produces a very simple thing. Yet this may be the only clear and dependable equation. Other connections and conclusions are variable and elusive. Generically characterized as big, spare forms of recycled newspapers, plastic bottles, aluminum cans, shredded rubber, or other jetsam, there is a serious content to this seemingly unaffected work. Remarkable and robust physical evidence and material accumulations convey a tension of imminent vulnerability and gradual dissolution. There is a puzzling experience of dissonant beauty in these ungainly objects made of disposable, if not unsightly materials. Often mimicking natural forms and processes, the conspicuously artificial work “fits” its environment in a plain, natural manner. – Patricia C. Steven Siegel’s works consistently push the boundaries of how we view the detritus of our day-to-day life. His works are created from recycled materials such as newspapers, aluminum cans and plastic bottles, which he recasts into site-based or landform sculptures. Wanting his biodegradable sculptures to have an impact on their surroundings, his works also challenge us to look again at how these discarded elements can be recast into meaningful and documentarian sculptures. Siegel’s work is beautiful. In its inherent beauty, we are pushed to re-visit the recycled papers, the plastic and bits of string, to find within this array of refuse a new coded language of our wasteful culture – in Siegel’s words, “a geological time capsule with its stratifications and layers of visual information.”

Siegel’s ambitious new project, A Puzzle for Alice, will ultimately consist of 160+ panels of historical “data” from his household, in which – due to the marvelous and seemingly spontaneous use of color and texture – the visual information seems to dance across the rows and up the columns of this complicated installation. The installation is so large, it may be impossible to show the entire work in situ; however, the artist has created a photographic montage as an integral part of the overall project, which will be available in the coming months. "I feel this piece is a reflection of how we see the world nowadays—with continuity being broken by lots of bits and bytes”, says Siegel.

Crumpling paper combines my interest in folds with a study John Cage’s ideas of randomness in the creation of art. Various sizes of thin paper are crumpled quickly. The resulting crumple is photographed at a very high resolution so that the images can be printed as illustration in books or as large photographic installations. Some of the crumples are subsequently destroyed when they are cross-sectioned or dissected. This work with crumples is in its infancy and its future is open for further discovery. – Rutherford Witthus

Rutherford Witthus recently completed Crumpled Papers, a unique art book from which these photographic images are derived. He conceives each of his books as an entire expression of prose, poetry, and imagery, all brought together in a thoughtful orchestration of paper, font, ink, and fold.

The concept for Crumpled Papers is a mathematical treatise by physicists in Chicago, who wrote about the “uncrumpling” and unfolding the Universe as a way of explicating the mechanics of its expansion.

The muse for the book is a Japanese paper which Witthus crumples and then photographs. The seeming organic shapes that result are completely antithetical to our expectations of what paper is, and how it performs. Against the drama of the dark background, the tonal range of white to gray in these complex, origami-like shapes shows the work to advantage. The extreme gradation of light and dark gives the impression of tremendous volume, while emphasizing the paper’s ephemeral and sensual quality.

Combining his interest in ancient languages, philosophy and book structures, Witthus is currently working on a series of books using literary and photographic fragments. His art books are collected in depth by such noted university libraries as Yale, Princeton, Wellesley College, and the University of Connecticut, and his Paper: Crumpled and Rolled was a show of his work presented at CYNTHIA-REEVES in January of this year. Witthus lives and works in Walpole, New Hampshire.
