The workshop ”Representations of finite groups” was organized by A. Kleshchev (Eugene), M. Linckelmann (Aberdeen), G. Malle (Kaiser- slautern) and J. Rickard (Bristol). It covered a wide variety of aspects of the representation theory of finite groups and related objects like Hecke algebras. Mathematics Subject Classification (2000): 20-06 20Cxx. Introduction by the Organisers The meeting was organized by A. Kleshchev (Eugene), M. Linckelmann (Ab- erdeen), G. Malle (Kaiserslautern) and J. Rickard (Bristol). This meeting was attended by over 50 participants with broad geographic representation. It covered a wide variety of aspects of the representation theory of finite groups and related objects like Hecke algebras. This workshop was sponsored by a project of the Eu- ropean Union which allowed us to invite in addition to established researchers also a couple of young people working on a PhD in representation theory. In eleven longer lectures of 40 minutes each and twentytwo shorter contributions of 30 min- utes each, recent progress in representation theory was presented and interesting new research directions were proposed. Besides the lectures, there was plenty of time for informal discussion between the participants, either continuing ongoing research cooperation or starting new projects. The topics of the talks came roughly from two major areas: on the one hand side, the investigation of representation theoretic properties of general finite groups and related objects, on the other hand the determination and detailed analysis of representations of special classes of finite groups and related objects like Hecke algebras. -

This research conference highlights the accomplishments of women in mathematics and showcases the research of female mathematicians at all stages of their careers. In 2011, the Association for Women in Mathematics celebrated its fortieth anniversary with a research conference, “40 Years and Counting, AWM’s Celebration of Women in Mathematics.” Participation at the anniversary conference greatly exceeded all expectations and motivated AWM to launch a series of biennial research symposia. The second AWM Symposium was held at Santa Clara University in 2013, and this symposium is the third event in the series. These symposia are designed to help support and nurture networks of female researchers in many areas of mathematics, to provide networking opportunities for junior and senior women to enhance career prospects and recognition. Olga Taussky-Todd's Emmy Noether Lecture entitled "The many aspects of Pythagorean triangles" was a great success and drew a big crowd. She is planning to publish the article. There was also an AWM panel on "AWM at ten: past, present and future". Mary Gray, Alice Schafer, and Lenore Blum traced the development of AWM from the time it was founded ten years ago; and Michele Vergne reflected on the future. Their talks will appear in the Newsletter. Linda Keen was the moderator. A press conference was organized by the AMS to discuss the articles in Science (December 12) on the Stanley-Benbow study. We issued a statement which said "The Association for Women in Mathematics is outraged by the irresponsible coverage in the December 12 issue of Science of a study of dubious validity on sex differences in mathematical ability. We strongly support the views of the Joint Committee on Women in Mathematics as expressed in an editorial to appear in the January 16 issue of Science." This has been communicated to the Editors of the Notices of the AMS. Mary Gray and Alice Schafer were at the press conference representing the AMS-MAA-SIAM Joint Committee on Women. Their editorial (referred to in our statement) has now appeared in Science. The first Gibbs Lecture by a woman was given by Cathleen Morawetz and was by all accounts very successful. Careers booklet. In 2011, we are celebrating the 40th anniversary of the founding of AWM, and exciting events are planned through- out the year. The next events take place at the International Congress on Industrial and Applied Mathematics (ICIAM) in Vancouver during July 18–22, 2011. AWM will have an embedded meeting at this congress, featuring panels and workshops. Many of these events of recent months and years have been fomented by internet communities that foster racism, sexism, and white male supremacy. As the work of Safiya Noble details beautifully, tech giants play a major role in the creation, growth, and support of these communities.
