The Southeast Asian Muslims, for example, once re- garded as being peripheral to the world of Islam, are now becoming recognized as model Muslim leaders with exceptional abilities to manage difficult tasks such as their own coun- try‟s economic development, the Islamic financial system, democratization and even aero- nautics. -

Signed: Date: 19 May 2012 I To my newly born baby II ABSTRACT The twentieth century saw the spread of Western art music across the world as Western ideology and values acquired increasing dominance in the global order. How did this process occur in China, what complexities does it display and what are its distinctive features? This thesis aims to provide a detailed and coherent understanding of the Westernisation of Chinese music in the 20th century, focusing on the ever-changing relationship between music and social ideology and the rise and evolution of national identity as expressed in music. This thesis views these issues through three crucial stages: the early period of the 20th century which witnessed the transition of Chinese society from an empire to a republic and included China’s early modernisation; the era from the 1930s to 1940s comprising the Japanese intrusion and the rising of the Communist power; and the decades of economic and social reform from 1978 onwards. The thesis intertwines the concrete analysis of particular pieces of music with social context and demonstrates previously overlooked relationships between these stages. It also seeks to illustrate in the context of the appropriation of Western art music how certain concepts acquired new meanings in their translation from the European to the Chinese context, for example modernity, Marxism, colonialism, nationalism, tradition, liberalism, and so on. -
The Vietnam War
Fact Sheet 1: Introduction- the Vietnam War Between June 1964 and December 1972 around 3500 New Zealand service personnel served in South Vietnam. Unlike the First and Second World Wars New Zealand’s contribution in terms of personnel was not huge. At its peak in 1968 the New Zealand force only numbered 543. Thirty-seven died while on active service and 187 were wounded. The Vietnam War – sometimes referred to as the Second Indochina War – lasted from 1959 to 1975. In Vietnam it is referred to as the American War. It was fought between the communist Democratic Republic of Vietnam (North Vietnam) and its allies, and the US-supported Republic of Vietnam in the south. It ended with the defeat of South Vietnam in April 1975. Nearly 1.5 million military personnel were killed in the war, and it is estimated that up to 2 million civilians also died. This was the first war in which New Zealand did not fight with its traditional ally, Great Britain. Our participation reflected this country’s increasingly strong defence ties with the United States and Australia. New Zealand’s involvement in Vietnam was highly controversial and attracted protest and condemnation at home and abroad. A study of New Zealand’s involvement in the Vietnam War raises a number of issues. As a historical study we want to find out what happened, why it happened and how it affected people’s lives. This war meant different things to different people. The Vietnam War was, and still is, an important part of the lives of many New Zealanders. -

A local Southeast Asian autonym is borrowed into Chinese, undergoes sound changes affecting the Chinese language, and then returns to the original populations, or to other populations. The result is a coexistence of ethnonyms of highly different phonetic outlook but originating in the same etymon. We will examine four families of ethnonyms, mostly Austroasiatic and Tai-Kadai. Some of these ethnonyms are still in use today, others are known through Chinese texts where they are transcribed by phonograms. -

A festival, which attracts a great deal of interest in social life, is an integrated form of activities including spiritual and material aspects, religious beliefs, arts and culture, the sacred and everyday life, and so on. Out of more than 9000 festivals in Vietnam, about 7000 traditional festivals are widely scattered across the country. Studying changes in the spiritual life of Vietnamese people through traditional festivals contributes to building spiritual life and building an advanced Vietnamese culture imbued with national identity. In order to ensure the effective organization and management of festivals, promote the cultural identity and diversity of national festivals, a scientific and comprehensive survey is needed, clarifying origins, characteristics, values, scale, and financial sources for organizing festivals; identifying viewpoints, criteria and classification methods on traditional festivals and modern festivals in our country, chaired by a specialized agency for scientific research. On the basis of the survey findings, the state authorities study and consider which types of festivals need planning, management decentralization, and elaboration of management regulations, mechanisms and policies consistent with the characteristics of traditional festivals and modern festivals. -

While the punk subculture has been analyzed in-depth by such notable theorists as Dick Hebdige and Stuart Hall, their work has been limited to examining the rise and apparent decline of the subculture in England, rendering any further investigations into punk as looking back at a nostalgic novelty of post- World War II British milieu. Furthermore, the commodification of punk music and style has relegated punk to the realm of an alternative culture in Britain and locally in the U.S. In these current international incarnations, however, a social space for this alternative culture is threatened by severe punishment including what Indonesian police officials have label “moral rehabilitation” and, in the case of Russian punks, imprisonment. -

If necessary, sectioning is continued again — beginning below the first row and continuing on until complete. 4.
