The data is organised in spreadsheets, in a manner allowing analysis from numerous standpoints: repertoire diversity; composition period; programme structure; regional origin; individual composer contributions; item categories; representation of New Zealand compositions; conductor and other influences on programme choice. These are displayed over 5- and 10-year performance periods, or as developing trends. To position the orchestra in the international context, and provide additional data for assessment of the adopted analysis methods, the equivalent data for four leading overseas orchestras (the New York, Berlin and Vienna Philharmonics, and the Manchester Halle) were similarly assembled and combined with the New Zealand data; these provide both similmi ties and contrasts. In respect of composition period, the New Zealand orchestra provided a very stable distribution from the Classical period onwards, with steady incorporation of repertoire from the period 1951-2000.

He had piano lessons from an early age but his serious training in composition began at the Moscow Conservatory where he studied counterpoint with Sergei Taneyev and harmony with Anton Arensky. He began to compose and for the rest of his life divided his musical time between composing, conducting and piano playing gaining great fame in all three. After leaving Russia permanently in 1917, the need to make a living made his rôle as a piano virtuoso predominant. His 4 Piano Concertos, Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini and substantial solo piano works make him one of the world's most-performed composers. However, he also composed operas, liturgical choral works as well as other pieces for orchestra, chamber groups and chorus. Attended the Royal College of Music where his teachers were Charles Stanford and William Rockstro. Started his musical career as a trombonist but spent the remainder of his life as a composer, teacher and administrator. He achieved great fame for his symphonic suite "The Planets." He composed in all genres and various styles and began his orchestral output with a Symphony in C minor in 1894. About Nottingham Harmonic Choir Opportunities for NOTTINGHAM Corporate Sponsorship O. HARM NIC CHOIR President: Prof. John Morehen Music Director: Richard Laing NOTTINGHAM Since its foundation in 1856, the Nottingham Harmonic Choir, Nottingham’s civic choir, has established itself as one of the leading provincial choirs in Britain. In its early years the names O of Charles Hallé and Sir Arthur Sullivan were among those associated with the choir. At the . beginning of the twentieth century its principal conductor was Henry Wood, later to become HARM NIC CHOIR Sir Henry Wood, conductor of the first Promenade Concerts. Following Noel Cox and Andrew Registered Charity no. 231548 Burnham, a twenty-year distinguished period of musical achievement under the guidance of gifted choral director Neil Page led to a brief stewardship under international conductor Murray Stewart. Richard Laing, appointed chorus master and director of music in 2009, brings a new, vibrant and youthful approach building upon the last period of successful development by his illustrious predecessors. The choir has regularly performed with guest conductors in addition to its Director of Music. Sir Adrian Boult, Sir Malcolm Sargent, Owain Arwel Hughes, Norman Del Mar, James Loughran and George Weldon are among those who have worked with the choir. In the last twenty years the choir has been privileged to be directed on several occasions by Laszlo Heltay, Richard Hickox, Sir Charles Groves and Sir David Willcocks. More recently, in partnership with Nottingham Classics, the Harmonic Choir has worked under John Wilson with City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra in 2008, and formed a new working relationship with the Hallé under Cristian Mandeal in 2011 and Sir Mark Elder in 2012 and 2013.
