Swire and Joint Publishing launch 150th anniversary in commemorative book in

In celebration of the Swire group’s 200th anniversary this year and the 150th anniversary of the opening of its first office in China, Swire and Shanghai Joint Publishing have today launched a commemorative book in Beijing. The launch event was held at The Opposite House in Taikoo Li Sanlitun, and was attended by John Slosar, Chairman of John Swire & Sons (H.K.) Limited, Ian Shiu, Director of John Swire & Sons (H.K.) Limited, Adrian Harley, Director and Chief Representative of John Swire & Sons (China) Limited, Huang Tao, Chief Editor of Shanghai Joint Publishing and Dr John Zhuang Yang, Co Dean of BiMBA at Peking University’s National School of Development, as well as Swire executives and journalists.

“The Taikoo Way – Swire in China for 150 years” was compiled by Professor Stephanie Po- yin Chung, a professor of history at Baptist University, whose research involved the study of more than 1,000 archive documents and photographs over the course of two and a half years. The book tells the story of how a small import-export trading firm evolved into the global conglomerate it is today. The Swire story highlights the group’s close ties with China, and charts the development of the Chinese economy over the past 150 years.

“The Swire group has survived many periods of economic volatility,” said John Slosar, Chairman of the Swire group in Hong Kong. “That we are still here today is largely thanks to the guiding principles that remain as important to us today as they were over the past two centuries. These are our long-term approach to our businesses, our commitment to developing the Swire team, and our focus on operational excellence.”

Mr Slosar said he believes that China's economic development and growth strategy, with its increasing emphasis on innovation and urban growth, will create new opportunities for Swire in the consumer and service markets. Looking ahead, China will continue to be a significant growth driver for the group.

“We were delighted to be appointed as the publisher of this book in China,” said Huang Tao, Chief Editor of Shanghai Joint Publishing. “The story of the Swire group’s growth and development demonstrates the strong entrepreneurial spirit that has persisted through the generations in this family business. At a time when the Chinese economy is undergoing structural transformation, I believe this book will inspire many Chinese enterprises.”

Today’s event included a panel discussion during which Mr Slosar and Dr Yang shared their personal business management philosophies and their views on talent management systems, multi-disciplined business models and potential new opportunities in the current economic environment. As the 35th Chairman of John Swire & Sons (H.K.), John Slosar also talked about his experiences working for the Swire group for more than 35 years, and discussed about Swire’s long-term business strategy and corporate culture.

“The Taikoo Way – Swire in China for 150 years” chronicles the business experiences of the Swire family over six generations. After establishing a branch in Shanghai in 1866, Swire ventured into the Chinese trading and shipping market, established a dockyard, and created the well-known Taikoo Sugar brand. From this solid foundation, the firm developed world renowned Cathay Pacific Airways, acquired a Coca-Cola bottling franchise, and diversified into the property business.

From a simple import-export business that opened in Shanghai 150 years ago, Swire today is a multinational corporation with diversified business interests in China that include property investment and management, aviation services (including airlines, aircraft engineering and maintenance), Coca-Cola production and distribution, cold storage and logistics, food manufacturing and distribution, multipurpose liner shipping services, the wholesale and retail of sports and lifestyle shoes, apparel and accessories, and the manufacture and distribution of decorative paints. The story of the Swire group’s 150-year history in China is a testament to the group’s long-term business strategy and also reflects the many historical changes in Chinese society and China’s economy.

“The Taikoo Way – Swire in China for 150 years” is now available in Shanghai Joint Publishing bookstores nationwide, as well as major online stores, including Dangdang.com, JD.com and Amazon.
