Did you know... “Be govern'd by your knowledge, and proceed”

•The end of the play has been changed a number of times over the years to suit the changing sensibilities of the audience. One commonly performed version sees Lear returned to throne and Cordelia happily married.

• Lines from King Lear appear in The Beatles’ hit I am the Walrus. The voices at the end of the song came from a BBC broadcast of the play, which John Lennon heard on the radio while they were working on the song. He decided to mix bits of the broadcast into the song.

• King Lear was not allowed to be performed anywhere in during the late 1700s and early 1800s because of King George III who had gone insane. The subject of royal insanity was all a little too real to be permitted in a play.

• In one historical account of King Lear and his daughters, the character Shakespeare called Goneril is named Gonorilla instead.
