EST OMNIS REIPUBLICAE POTESTAS: DUBROVNIK’S PATRICIAN HOUSES AND THEIR PARTICIPATION IN POWER (1440-1640) ZDENKO ZLATAR ABSTRACT: This study is an analysis of the share that each patrician house had in the exercise of the most important functions in government (the Rec- tor, the member of the Minor Council, the Senator, the Guardian of Justice), and the ratio of these houses in the Major Council. Some houses secured more offices than they were entitled to according to their numerical strength in the Major Council (Gradi/GradiÊ, Gondola/GunduliÊ, Georgi/–ureviÊ, Cerva/ CrijeviÊ, Menze/MenËetiÊ, Zamagno/DæamanjiÊ, Resti/RastiÊ, Bona/BuniÊ), while others did not get their fair share (Caboga/Kaboga, Sorgo/SorkoËeviÊ, Pozza/PuciÊ, Ragnina/Ranjina, Bobali/BobaljeviÊ, Gozze/GuËetiÊ). Despite these differences, one cannot talk of an oligarchy within Dubrovnik’s ruling class. Introduction The patriciate held the monopoly of power in the Republic of Dubrovnik for four and a half centuries, i.e. from the departure of a Venetian Rector Zdenko Zlatar is Reader in Slavic History at The University of Sydney. Dr Trevor Waters Introduction Croatia's passage into the new millennium was marked by the death, on 10 December 1999, of the self-proclaimed "Father of the Nation", President Dr Franjo Tudjman; by make or break Parliamentary Elections, held on 3 January 2000, which secured the crushing defeat of the former president's ruling Croatian Democratic Union, yielded victory for an alliance of the six mainstream opposition parties, and ushered in a new coalition government strong enough to implement far-reaching reform; and by two rounds, on 24 January and 7 February, of Presidential Elections which resulted in a surprising and spectacular victory for the charismatic Stipe Mesić, Yugoslavia's last president, nonetheless considered by many Croats at the start of the campaign as an outsider, a man from the past. -
Framing Croatia's Politics of Memory and Identity
Workshop: War and Identity in the Balkans and the Middle East WORKING PAPER WORKSHOP: War and Identity in the Balkans and the Middle East WORKING PAPER Author: Taylor A. McConnell, School of Social and Political Science, University of Edinburgh Title: “KRVatska”, “Branitelji”, “Žrtve”: (Re-)framing Croatia’s politics of memory and identity Date: 3 April 2018 Workshop: War and Identity in the Balkans and the Middle East WORKING PAPER “KRVatska”, “Branitelji”, “Žrtve”: (Re-)framing Croatia’s politics of memory and identity Taylor McConnell, School of Social and Political Science, University of Edinburgh Web: taylormcconnell.com | Twitter: @TMcConnell_SSPS | E-mail: [email protected] Abstract This paper explores the development of Croatian memory politics and the construction of a new Croatian identity in the aftermath of the 1990s war for independence. Using the public “face” of memory – monuments, museums and commemorations – I contend that Croatia’s narrative of self and self- sacrifice (hence “KRVatska” – a portmanteau of “blood/krv” and “Croatia/Hrvatska”) is divided between praising “defenders”/“branitelji”, selectively remembering its victims/“žrtve”, and silencing the Serb minority. While this divide is partially dependent on geography and the various ways the Croatian War for Independence came to an end in Dalmatia and Slavonia, the “defender” narrative remains preeminent. As well, I discuss the division of Croatian civil society, particularly between veterans’ associations and regional minority bodies, which continues to disrupt amicable relations among the Yugoslav successor states and places Croatia in a generally undesired but unshakable space between “Europe” and the Balkans. 1 Workshop: War and Identity in the Balkans and the Middle East WORKING PAPER Table of Contents Abstract ................................................................................................................................................................... -

Women in Hell Donne All'inferno
Grazie a Dante, naturalmente. -

The exhibition gives a historical view of book preparation and design in Croatia from the Middle Ages to the present day. It includes manuscript and printed books on different topics and themes, from mediaeval evangelistaries and missals to contemporary illustrated editions, print portfolios and artists’ books. Featured are the items that represent the best samples of artistic book design in Croatia with regard to their graphic design and harmonious relationship between the visual and graphic layout and content. The author of the exhibition is art historian Milan Pelc, who selected 60 items for presentation on panels. In addition to the introductory essay, the publication contains the catalogue of items with short descriptions. 4 Milan Pelc CENTURIES OF BOOK ART IN CROATIA Introduction Book art, a constituent part of written culture and Croatian cultural heritage as a whole, is ex- ceptionally rich and diverse. This essay does not pretend to describe it in its entirety. Its goal is to shed light on some (key) moments in its complex historical development and point to its most important specificities. The essay does not pertain to entire Croatian literary heritage, but only to the part created on the historical Croatian territory and created by the Croats. Namely, with regard to its origins, the Croatian literary heritage can be divided into three big groups. -

February 13, 1992 Volume 4, Issue 4
February 13, 1992 Volume 4, Issue 4 His Excellency Franjo Tudjman President of the Republic of Croatia Radi ev Trg 2 41000 Zagreb Croatia Dear President Tudjman: The U.S. Helsinki Watch Committee is deeply concerned by reports of serious human rights abuses by forces responsible to the Croatian government and by individual extremists in Croatia. Our own investigations of these reports, conducted during a series of fact-finding missions to Croatia in the past year, indicate that many of these reports are well-founded. We call upon you to investigate the abuses enumerated in this letter and to punish those responsible for them. We call upon you to take immediate measures to ensure that such violations of human rights do not occur again. The abuses described in this letter include violations of the laws of war in the current conflict between Croatian and Serbian forces and the Yugoslav army, including the summary execution of civilians and disarmed combatants; the torture and mistreatment of detainees; arbitrary arrests and disappearances; destruction of civilian property and the killing of journalists covering the war. In addition to violations connected with the war, Helsinki Watch has also documented restrictions on freedom of expression and the press and interference with the independence of the judiciary. Finally, we are gravely concerned about the harassment, discrimination and rising violence against Serbs not engaged in the armed conflict in Croatia. Rules of War Violations in Croatia by Croatian Forces Violations of the rules of war are often committed by local police officers and members of the Croatian army1 in areas which are under heavy siege by Serbian forces and the Yugoslav army. -

TISKANI ČASOSLOVI ANDRIJE PALTAŠIĆA I DOBRIĆA DOBRIĆEVIĆA (BONINUS DE BONINIS) I NJIHOVA LIKOVNA OPREMA Ugledna talijanska povjesničarka knjige s oksfordskog sveučilišta, Cristina Dondi, objavila je 2016. opsežnu monografiju o časoslovima Blažene Djevice Marije tiskanima u Italiji do 1500. godine (DONDI 2016). Autorica je opisala i tiskane oficije objavljene u štamparijama dvojice tiskara hrvatskoga pod- rijetla: Andrije Paltašića u Veneciji i Dobrića Dobrićevića (Boninus de Boninis) u Veroni. On je prepoznatljiv i u likovnoj opremi tzv. Dubrovač- kog molitvenika, tiskanog 1512. kod Giorgia Rusconija u Veneciji. Nataša Urošević, Sveučilište Jurja Dobrile, Pula, pregledni članak UDK 821.163.42.09 Balota, M.-9 U radu se propituje funkcija feljtonističkog i putopisnog diskursa u djelu Mije Mirkovića/ Mate Balote (1898-1963).
