2020 Annual Report

OSTEN & VICTOR ALBERTA CENTRE

Alberta Tennis Centre (587) 393 1604 295, 90 Avenue SE [email protected] Calgary, AB, T2J 0A1 www.albertatenniscentre.ca MESSAGE FROM OUR CHAIR

Dear Members & Stakeholders,

As I write these comments for our fifth annual report, I reflect on how quickly the years have passed us by and how so many positive events have occurred at the OSTEN & VICTOR Alberta Tennis Centre. Time, as it does, moves by us so quickly.

With all humility, I must say that I am so proud of what we have accomplished in the development of our centre in such a short period of time. As a non-profit organization, we have no debt, we have a wonderful volunteer Board to whom I am so very grateful, and we are blessed with a dedicated group of professional coaches and staff under the talented and committed leadership of our CEO, Danny Da Costa.

Thank you to our generous donors who have been instrumental in making our dreams and visions of our tennis home a reality, in particular, Al Osten and Buddy Victor. Above all, I want to thank our membership who have supported us over the past five years and especially during the challenges of the pandemic which has forced our closure over times during 2020.

Our ATP Challenger tournament, this past February, was an amazing success. The eyes of the tennis world focused on Calgary as we organized and presented what was described as one of the best ATP Challenger tournaments in the world.

As described in this report we have just begun. We have plans. We urgently need to cover our outdoor courts to meet the demand and pressures on our courts and programs. We also wish to utilize some adjacent land as a community park and location for outdoor clay courts.

The plans for our covered courts are finalized and we will now embark on the task of raising the financing necessary to build the structure.

The growth of tennis is exploding and we are honored to be a part of it. It is a wonderful recreation for young and old, and has become an integral part of our Community.

Warm Regards,

Ron Ghitter, Chair

2 MESSAGE FROM OUR CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER

Dear Member, Program Participant & Stakeholder,

2020 has been a difficult year. On behalf of our organization, I want to thank all of our members, program participants, and stakeholders for your unwavering support as we navigate the COVID-19 pandemic. Your continued support and patience has been beneficial to our staff, board and organization.

The COVID-19 pandemic has changed our world, and it has also changed the way we do things. Our organization endured two business interruptions totalling close to 3 months of closure. Although we have gone through periods of inactivity, we have enjoyed one of our busiest and most productive years as a business. COVID has challenged our sport tremendously, however, it has also revitalized the sport of tennis in our province. Tennis has benefited from a surge in popularity during the pandemic as one of the safest sports to play.

Despite the challenges we have faced in the past year, there is much to be excited about. Firstly, our organization is embarking on a new strategic direction. Our planned expansion will allow more public access to tennis and will help inspire a new generation of talent in our province. It will allow us more opportunities to attract national and international events to Calgary and it will allow us to further enhance the Calgary National Bank Challenger.

Our club development programs remain one of the best in Canada. All of our club programs operate at full capacity with large waiting lists. Our club membership has grown remarkably and we have seen growth across all levels. While we have grown significantly in the past year, it has come with its own challenges. Our Board and Staff are committed to finding more opportunities for our members and program participants to play and enjoy the sport of tennis.

Thank you to my staff, who have been incredible this year. Through all the challenges we have faced, they have remained committed, and have come to work with renewed enthusiasm while ensuring all of our staff members, program participants and members remain safe. We are also grateful for the guidance and support we enjoy from our Board of Directors. In a year of difficult circumstances, the Board has ensured our staff are supported and appreciated.

I am so proud to lead this organization as CEO, however, it is our members, staff and tennis community that makes our organization successful. Better times are ahead and we look forward to seeing you on the courts in 2021.

Danny Da Costa, CEO
