Navy Hospital Corpsmen here celebrated their Corps' 79th Anniversary Saturday with a banquet and dance at the Enlisted Club. Guests of Honor, Rear Admiral Robert Williams Jr., Commander-in-Chief Pacific surgeon and fleet medical officer, and Colonel John Miller, com- manding officer, Marine Corps Air Station, Kaneohe, lauded the hospital corps for outstanding service during its 79 year history. Admiral Williams stressed the value of the Hospital Corps saying that without Corpsmen the Naval medical service would be greatly impaired. He further praised the service saying, "the job you do today is the legacy of tomorrow." Also during the festivities, Hospitalman Third Class John Akiona, a reserve Corpsman, was reen- listed into the regular Navy by Captain Larry Font, Brigade surgeon. The ceremonies were highlighted by a traditional cake-cutting by the youngest Corpsman, Hospital- man Apprentice Patrick Esty, and the oldest, Master Chief Hospital Corpsman John Phillips. The Hospital Corps came into existence on June 19, 1898, as a unit of the Naval Medical Depart- ment authorized by Congress. As a result of the Con- gressional Act, 25 senior Navy pharmacists became the charter members of the Hospital Corps. The dean of the 25 sailors was Cornelieus O'Leary who had 37 and a half years service as a pharmacist. In action two years after the establishment, the Hospital Corps' Robert Standley became the first Corpsman to earn the Medal of Honor in action during the Boxer Rebellion in China. By Cpl. Gil Fulgencio The cheering fans were not enough to help Navy chalk up a victory during the intramural slowpitch softball championship at Rise ly Field. 1st Battalion, Third Marines silenced the roar of the Navy crowd by overpowering the sailors 11-6 to capture the championship. The Leathernecks entered the double elimination tournament with an 8-2 record during the regular season and Navy came in slightly better at 9-1. But when it comes to championship play, records don't mean a thing. That's exactly what the Marines were out to prove, handing the sailors both of their losses during the tournament. Entering the game with one loss, Navy knew that this game was a must win in order to keep their championship hopes alive. How- ever 1/3 had a few dreams of their own, sending eight batters to the plate to knock off three runs in the first inning. To further exemplify their train of thought, the Leathernecks banged out four more runs in the second inning.
