    Unit 2: Ecosystem An organism is always in the state of perfect balance with the environment. The environment literally means the surroundings. The environment refers to the things and conditions around the organisms which directly or indirectly influence the life and development of the organisms and their populations. “Ecosystem is a complex in which habitat, plants and animals are considered as one interesting unit, the materials and energy of one passing in and out of the others” – Woodbury. Organisms and environment are two non-separable factors. Organisms interact with each other and also with the physical conditions that are present in their habitats. ―The organisms and the physical features of the habitat form an ecological complex or more briefly an ecosystem.‖ (Clarke, 1954). The concept of ecosystem was first put forth by A.G. Tansley (1935). Ecosystem is the major ecological unit. It has both structure and functions. The structure is related to species diversity. The more complex is the structure the greater is the diversity of the species in the ecosystem. The functions of ecosystem are related to the flow of energy and cycling of materials through structural components of the ecosystem. According to Woodbury (1954), ecosystem is a complex in which habitat, plants and animals are considered as one interesting unit, the materials and energy of one passing in and out of the others. According to E.P. Odum, the ecosystem is the basic functional unit of organisms and their environment interacting with each other and with their own components. An ecosystem may be conceived and studied in the habitats of various sizes, e.g., one square metre of grassland, a pool, a large lake, a large tract of forest, balanced aquarium, a certain area of river and ocean.

    Topographical Maps Chapter 5 Topographical Maps You know that the map is an important geographic tool. You also know that maps are classified on the basis of scale and functions. The topographical maps, which have been referred to in Chapter 1 are of utmost importance to geographers. They serve the purpose of base maps and are used to draw all the other maps. Topographical maps, also known as general purpose maps, are drawn at relatively large scales. These maps show important natural and cultural features such as relief, vegetation, water bodies, cultivated land, settlements, and transportation networks, etc. These maps are prepared and published by the National Mapping Organisation of each country. For example, the Survey of India prepares the topographical maps in India for the entire country. The topographical maps are drawn in the form of series of maps at different scales. Hence, in the given series, all maps employ the same reference point, scale, projection, conventional signs, symbols and colours. The topographical maps in India are prepared in two series, i.e. India and Adjacent Countries Series and The International Map Series of the World. India and Adjacent Countries Series: Topographical maps under India and Adjacent Countries Series were prepared by the Survey of India till the coming into existence of Delhi Survey Conference in 1937. Henceforth, the preparation of maps for the adjoining 49 countries was abandoned and the Survey of India confined itself to prepare and publish the topographical maps for India as per the specifications laid down for the International Map Series of the World.

Timely and accurate monitoring of these changes is a difficult task for regional planning and management. Up-to-date information on distribution and rate of changes of any ecosystem are required for a wide variety of applications viz., biome status, en- vironmental, climatic etc. Aerospace technology has been found to be a vital tool for assessment and monitoring of these natural resources. The present study focuses on the potential of IRS 1C WiFS data set for the regional level mapping. The temporal resolution along with the rec- ommended spatial and spectral resolution configures for the assessment of the phenological growth of the vegetation in the terrestrial ecosystems. The utilization of the climatic data along with the biogeographic map is proposed to delineate the biomes in the western Indian subcon- tinent. The product offers the basic input for the eco-physiological processes for studying the land surface interactions and conservation strategies of the arid regions.
