Linear Walks

I am writing this immediately after the second stage of this year’s Linear Walk. Those who have attended will know that once again the programme is being well supported with well over a 100 people attending on each day, and by the time you read this the third stage will have been completed and we will be more than half way along the Peddars Way.

Already I am being asked ―what are we doing next year?‖ It is quite likely that it will be the Coast Path, but nothing is decided yet – indeed it depends on two things, firstly that NCC continues to be willing to support the event and secondly that someone from the Ramblers will be willing to liaise with them, to continue the job I have been doing since 2000.

When the first of these walks was planned for 2000 it was not intended to be a con- tinuing programme, just a one off event for that year. However, before it was com- pleted members were asking for more! And I have gone on doing it because ―I did it last year‖, but I have concluded that each year I find it more tiring (I am nine years older apart from any other aspect of the matter!) and would now like someone else to take a turn.

I do know that many of you are already committed to turning up on every one of the walks, so I am sure that someone will be willing to take on the organising so you can all continue to enjoy these popular events. Over the years it has proved to be good publicity for the Ramblers and a source of new members – new members who really do want to walk rather than just thinking ―it might be a good idea‖, so are much more likely to continue their membership in future years.

I am willing to provide some help (and advice if required) for 2010, which may make taking over the job a little easier. The responsibilities could easily be shared if two people would like to take the job on together. In the meantime I will be happy to provide further information to anyone who may be interested, phone 01953 861094 or e-mail [email protected]

Please will someone volunteer to continue this successful programme in future years? Sheila Smith

The Car Park at Coltishall Common

The Car Park at Coltishall Common serves also as the car park for the adjacent two Pubs and the Trustees who manage the Common & Car Park are concerned that on Sundays the Car Park is being filled by Ramblers/ walkers, who are arriving mid morning, blocking the car park to patrons who would normally partake of Sunday lunch, and leave mid afternoon without entering either pub! The Trustees are under pressure to take action to resolve this impasse but it would help if users wishing to walk in the vicinity used the Pubs if they wish to use the Car Park!

A plea to walk leaders

All too often when speaking to walkers who are NOT members of the Ramblers’ Association I hear them say ― Oh, no, we don’t walk with the Ramblers – they go much too fast and never stop to look at anything‖ or ― The Ramblers? We only went

on one of their walks and it was much too fast for us, the leader never looked back Holiday to Cliftonville to see what was happening behind them‖

No longer able to manage the walking holidays? May I put in a plea for these non- but maybe prospective members, also for Then join with some of your ex rambling friends members who may not be able to keep up as fast a pace as they used to. on a sightseeing holiday to Scarborough.
