Studies in East European Thought https://doi.org/10.1007/s11212-020-09366-2 Gustav Shpet’s Transcendental Turn Liisa Bourgeot1 © The Author(s) 2020 Abstract Shpet’s interpretation of Husserl’s phenomenology has caused puzzlement because of the lack of clarity with which he treats the transcendental turn in Appearance and Sense (1914). I suggest that we fnd a more comprehensive discussion on the topic in Shpet’s 1917 article, “Wisdom or Reason?” There, Shpet reacts to Husserl’s treatment of a cluster of problems related to the latter’s transition to transcenden- tal idealism. I read “Wisdom or Reason?” not only in relation to Husserl’s Logos article of 1911, but also to his 1907 lecture series “The Idea of Phenomenology.” My analysis of Shpet’s phenomenology reveals that he followed through with the transcendental turn, although his philosophy developed in a direction diferent from Husserl’s transcendental idealism. Shpet postulates a collective consciousness, in which meaning-constitution takes place, and discovers the “word” as the founda- tion for any cognition. Shpet’s phenomenology remains ontological, as he considers language or culture as the “form of being” in which human beings live. In “Wisdom or Reason?,” Shpet argues that we can have direct knowledge of this meaningful reality: being is not “represented” but “presented” in a word. A certain compatibility thus exists between Shpet’s phenomenology of cultural reality and Husserl’s search for the absolute validity of knowledge. Pilnyak’s name had been very much in the news as he withstood two vicious campaigns of vilification launched against him in the late 1920s, when the official Soviet press vehemently attacked him for writing what they considered slanderous, if not treasonous, works of prose fiction that advanced blatantly “counter-revolutionary” and “anti-Soviet” sentiments. -

Like the Soviet Union, Soviet literature was a consciously multinational, multiethnic project. This dissertation approaches Soviet literature in its broadest sense – as a cultural field incorporating texts, institutions, theories, and practices such as writing, editing, reading, canonization, education, performance, and translation. It uses archival materials to analyze how Soviet literary institutions combined Russia’s literary heritage, the doctrine of socialist realism, and nationalities policy to conceptualize the national literatures, a term used to define the literatures of the non-Russian peripheries. It then explores how such conceptions functioned in practice in the early 1930s, in both Moscow and Baku, the capital of Soviet Azerbaijan. Although the debates over national literatures started well before the Revolution, this study focuses on 1932-34 as the period when they crystallized under the leadership of the Union of Soviet Writers. -

The paper reveals the thematic content and plot structure of the Rus- sian short stories written in the 20th century’s first three decades. It presents part of the ongoing project aimed at a comprehensive study of the Russian short stories of this period, encompassing their thematic, structural and linguistic fea- tures. This particular period is targeted because it was marked by a series of dramatic historical events (Russo-Japanese war, World War I, February and Oc- tober revolutions, the Civil War, formation of the Soviet Union) that could not but affect Russian literature and language style. Within the project, a corre- sponding text corpus has been created, currently containing several thousands stories and thus allowing for a wide coverage of texts and their computer pro- cessing. On its basis, a random sample has been selected, serving as a testbed to probe preliminary observations and hypotheses. It is used in the paper to identi- fy prevailing themes, both major and minor, manifest and latent, as well as characteristic narrative structures and to trace the way they kept changing over the three decades. -

Gustav Gustavovich Shpet (1879–1937) has a reputation for being a very demanding but equally rewarding thinker, a “philosopher’s philosopher” if ever there were one. That reputation is confirmed by these two excellent volumes, which are written for specialists well versed in European intellectual history and philosophy. Various contributors explicate the theoretical foundations of Shpet’s system, which are in the sometimes esoteric realms of phenomenology (immanent analysis of pure consciousness through reduction to its essential ideas), hermeneutics (which understands human beings as uniquely cultural beings—that is, as creators and conveyors of meaning through the use of signs, especially words), the philosophy of language (which approaches the “word” as the distinctive human capacity), and, at the most general level, ontology (the philosophical discipline concerned with the study of being). Yet despite the complex theoretical grounding, the burden of both volumes is to demonstrate Shpet’s broad relevance to—and deep power to inform—some of the central I am grateful to Professor George L. Th e article examines the implicit tradition of deep semiotics in Russia initiated by Gustav Shpet, a Russian philosopher of language. Shpet’s semiotic approach was developed synchronously with the major lines of European and American semiotics (Saussurian and Peircean), but has not been suffi ciently known or studied. Th e recent publication of previously unknown papers by Shpet makes this Russian philosopher an advanced fi gure on the Russian semiotic scene. Shpet was one of the fi rst Russian scholars to use the term ‘semiotics’, by which he meant a “general ontological study of signs”. Shpet used this term in his work History as a Problem of Logic as early as in 1916. Shpet’s main work on semiotics, the book Language and Sense (1920s), traced back the origins of semiotic thinking and laid the foundations for new semiotics, by which he meant a science of understanding signs. It is here that Shpet spoke of the ontological study of a sign, calling this study semiotics, or else characterics, and raising the issue of the semiotic mind.1 Keywords: deep semiotics, Gustav Shpet, philosophy of language, study of signs 1. -

Куприянов Санкт-Петербургский филиал Института истории естествознания и техники РАН, Сакнт-Петербург, Россия DOI: 10.30727/0235-1188-2019-62-1-139-151 Оригинальная исследовательская статья Аннотация В статье анализируется понимание Октябрьской революции в «Очерке раз- вития русской философии» Г.Г. Шпета. Автор рассматривает теорию типов интеллигенции (церковной, правительственной и оппозиционной) Шпета и по- казывает, как в ней проявилось отношение к Октябрьской революции, которую Шпет оценивает исходя из некоторого идеального представления о революции, призванной дать важный импульс к развитию культуры. Доказывается, что, согласно Г.Г. Шпету, бывшая оппозиционная интеллигенция, которая сфор- мировала правительство в новом советском государстве, в своем отношении к культуре идентична царской правительственной интеллигенции, что означает фактическую реставрацию политики царизма в сфере культуры в советской России. На этом основании автор делает вывод, что Г.Г. Шпет понимает рево- люцию как упущенный шанс изменения отношения государства к культуре в России. Исходя из концепции Шпета, можно заключить, что политические со- бытия 1917 года невозможно считать в подлинном смысле революционными, поскольку идея революции предполагает радикальную смену существующего общественно-политического строя, о чем сложно в полной мере говорить в слу- чае «революции 1917 года». История противостояния оппозиционной интелли- генции и правительства в эпоху царизма оказалась аналогичной тем обществен- ным процессам, которые были связаны с развитием диссидентского движения и вызвали крах СССР. В статье уделяется особое внимание интерпретации Шпе- том творчества Н.Г. Чернышевского. В статье показано, что Шпет обоснованно связывает творчество Чернышевского с европейским Просвещением XVIII века, уподобляя русского мыслителя Вольтеру. -

All seemed to be going swash -bucklingly well until the director came up to him and said, ‘We just need to be sure that we keep the scene this side of reality.’ ‘Oh?’ asked my friend (Actor A), wondering if his performance was too “theatrical” despite the highly theatrical tenor of the drama. ‘Am I not?’. ‘No, no!’ reassured the director. ‘It’s great – but we just need to be sur e that we keep it this side of reality.’ The scene proceeded, the action of which involved Actor A’s character shouting a challenge across a field to Actor B (one of the series regulars). He shouted his challenge, he waited for the response, and…he waited…and he waited…and he waited. ‘Cut!’ declared the director and walked over to Actor A. ‘Is anything wr ong?
