Although the chief focus of Sino-Platonic Papers is on the intercultural relations of China with other peoples, challenging and creative studies on a wide variety of philological subjects will be entertained. This series is not the place for safe, sober, and stodgy presentations. Sino-Platonic Papers prefers lively work that, while taking reasonable risks to advance the field, capitalizes on brilliant new insights into the development of civilization. The only style-sheet we honor is that of consistency. Where possible, we prefer the usages of the Journal of Asian Studies. -

scripture-telling in zhangjiagang rostislav berezkin Scripture-telling (jiangjing) in the Zhangjiagang Area and the History of Chinese Storytelling INTRODUCTION cripture-telling (jiangjing 講經)1 has recently attracted considerable S attention among scholars in China and abroad. It is a kind of sto- rytelling that survives today mainly in two areas of Jiangsu — Jingjiang 靖江 (a county-level city under the jurisdiction of Taizhou 泰州) and Zhangjiagang 張家港 (a county-level city under Suzhou 蘇州; see ap- pended map). Scripture-telling implies predominantly religious sub- jects and is connected with written texts, called baojuan 寳卷 (precious scrolls).2 Major specialists on baojuan texts in China and in the West, Che Xilun 車錫倫 and Daniel L. Overmyer, worked out the conception of three periods in the history of baojuan literature.3 During the initial period (14th–15th centuries), baojuan propagated popularized Buddhist doctrines. In the early period (16th–18th centuries), baojuan were usu- ally used as the scriptures of sects.4 There is also evidence that these so-called sectarian baojuan did not supplant the performance of popular The author wishes to express his deep appreciation for the critical reading of an earlier ver- sion of this paper by Victor H. It aims to show, hy examining certain data from the inexhaustible traditional Chinese literature on the subject of dreams and dreaming, some aspects of the dream life of the ancient Chinese. The first five chapters deal with the various ways in which dreams were regarded as significant in ancient China. Although my approach is primarily thematic, the data are presented in a more or less chronological order, so that some light may be thrown on the develop• mental dimension of the traditional Chinese thinking on dreams in the process. -

Becoming Sages: Qin Song and Self-Cultivation in Late Imperial China Dissertation Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of The Ohio State University By Zeyuan Wu Graduate Program in East Asian Languages and Literatures The Ohio State University 2020 Dissertation Committee Meow Hui Goh, Advisor Patricia Sieber, Co-advisor Udo Will Ying Zhang 1 Copyrighted by Zeyuan Wu 2020 2 Abstract This dissertation aims to understand the significance of qin songs (songs accompanied on the qin, the seven-stringed zither) to their practitioners in late imperial China. The qin was known as an instrument for self-cultivation throughout Chinese history. However, our current knowledge of how qin music was used for self-cultivation purposes in premodern China is largely limited to the ideological aspect, awaiting to be supported or modified by investigations of specific historical practices. Looking into different qin practitioners’ works, activities, social connections, and life experiences, this dissertation shows how they made various use of qin song—the musical form and activities related to it—to achieve their goals of becoming the ideal self. I argue that late imperial qin songs were often composed and edited for the purpose of communicating general moral principles and particular moral exemplarity to a larger community of the like-minded (zhiyin). As a result, activities related to these songs allowed the practitioners to extend their social influence on their way of pursuing sagehood. The social function of the songs challenges today’s widespread assumptions that both qin music and self-cultivation are primarily meditative and solitary. -
