The material was collected during 12 summer expeditions organized from Diversity; 1997 to 2013. In all, 24 pelagic and 116 benthic taxa were recorded, most of them widely Distribution distributed Arctic-boreal species. The advection of different water masses from the shelf had a direct impact on the structure of the pelagic Malacostraca communities, resulting in the clear dominance of the sub-arctic hyperiid amphipod Themisto abyssorum in Kongsfjorden and the great abundance of Decapoda larvae in Hornsund. The taxonomic, functional and size compositions of the benthic malacostracan assemblages varied between the two fjords, and also between the glacier-proximate inner bays and the main fjord basins, as a result of the varying dominance patterns of the same assemblage of species. There was a significant drop in species richness in the strongly disturbed glacial bays of both fjords, but only in Hornsund was this accompanied by a significant decrease in density and diversity, probably due to greater isolation and poorer quality of sediment organic matter in its innermost basin. -

Trathan British Antarctic Survey, Natural Environment Research Council, High Cross, Madingley Road, Cambridge, CB3 0ET, UK ABSTRACT: We analysed summer diet and fledging mass of macaroni penguins Eudyptes chrysolophus breeding at Bird Island, South Georgia, during the crèche period (January and February) between 1989 and 2010. Crustaceans were the main prey accounting, for over 90% of the diet by mass. Antarctic krill Euphausia superba was the main prey, in 17 out of 22 years. Amphipods Themisto gaudichaudii were the main prey in 1994 and 2009, fish in 2004, and the euphausiids Thysanoessa spp. and Euphausia frigida in 2000. There was no clearly dominant prey group in 1999. Prey diversity and the frequency occurrence of T. gaudichaudii both increased with a decreasing proportion of E. superba in the diet. There was strong evidence that macaroni penguins have a sigmoidal functional response, indicating that this kind of response should be accounted for when devising ecosystem-based management reference points for seabirds. The energy and mass of all euphausiids combined (rather than E. superba in particular) in the diet were the most reliable predictors of chick fledging mass; the correlation between model-predicted and observed values was 0.84. The gross energy content of individual meals was often above aver- age in years when the diets contained fewer euphausiids, but fledging mass was always below average in these years. -

This study is based primarily on the extensive collections of the ZMUC but also on more recent collections in other institutions. Seven valid species are recognised in this review, including one described as new to science. Two new characters were discovered; the first two pereonites are partially or wholly fused dorsally and the coxa of pereopod 7 is fused with the pereonite. -

A total of 140 individuals (36–101mm total length) were col− lected using a bottom trawl. All individuals were sexed and 26 of these were also analysed for gonadosomatic index (GSI), hepatosomatic index (HSI) and stomach content. The sex ratio of the entire sample showed a strong bias towards females (75% of all examined speci− mens). The GSI ranged from 1.4 to 5.8% except for one female with a GSI of 20%. All fe− males carried gonads in which eggs were clearly visible, independent of size, indicative of an early sexual maturation and an iteroparous life cycle of females. All examined specimens had almost an exclusively pelagic diet, with Themisto libellula constituting 100% of the stomach content in 80% of the examined fishes. The results are discussed in relation to diel vertical migration of Arctic zooplankton and deep migrating layers. Key words: Arctic, Eumicrotremus spinosus, Themisto libellula, DVM. Matley i Abstract This thesis investigates the foraging behaviour of Arctic cod (Boreogadus saida) and its predators during the summer in Allen Bay and Resolute Bay, Cornwallis Island, Nunavut, Canada. Major findings included the identification of Arctic cod, ringed seal (Pusa hispida), beluga (Delphinapterus leucas), and narwhal (Monodon monoceros) diet shifts in response to seasonal prey availability; calculation of isotopic diet-tissue discrimination factors for Arctic cod, ringed seals, and whales based on local tissue and stomach content sampling; and determination of cues that predators use to optimize foraging, such as the presence of schools. Additionally, I quantified seabird feeding and interspecific interactions such kleptoparasitism and found that black-legged kittiwakes (Rissa tridactyla) and northern fulmars (Fulmarus glacialis) captured cod directly but lost many to parasitic jaegers (Stercorarius parasiticus) and glaucous gulls (Larus hyperboreus). Finally, I determined that schools of cod were important prey sources for northern fulmars, glaucous gulls, and whales however non-schooling cod were a significant source for black-legged kittiwakes and ringed seals. ii Acknowledgements Numerous people and funding sources are responsible for the completion of this thesis. A distinct seasonal periodicity in the distribution pattern of this amphipod was recorded. During summer, when its hosts - the scyphomedusae Aurelia aurita, Chrysaora hysoscella, Rhizo- stoma pulmo, Cyanea capillata and Cyanea lamarckn'- occur in large numbers, supplying shelter and food, a population explosion of H. galba can be observed. It is caused primarily by the relatively high fecundity of H. galba which greatly exceeds that of other amphipods: a maximum of 456 eggs was observed. The postembryonic development is completed in the medusae infested; only then are the young able to swim and search for a new host. The smallest fr4ely-swimming hyperians obtained from plankton samples were 2.6 mm in body size. The size classes observed as well as moult increment and moulting frequencies in relation to different temperatures suggest that two genera- tions are developed per year: a rapidly growing generation in summer and a slower growing generation in winter that shifts to a benthic mode of life and hibernation. For short periods, adult hyperians may become attached to zooplankters other than scyphomedusae. -

Many species are likely to have co-evolved with soft-bodied zooplankton groups such as salps 20 and medusae, using them as substrate, for food, shelter or reproduction. Compared to other pelagic 21 groups, such as fish, euphausiids and soft-bodied zooplankton, hyperiid amphipods are poorly studied 22 especially in terms of their distribution and ecology. Hyperiids of the genus Themisto, comprising seven 23 distinct species, are key players in temperate and cold-water pelagic ecosystems where they reach 24 enormous levels of biomass. In these areas, they are important components of marine food webs, and 25 they are major prey for many commercially important fish and squid stocks. In northern parts of the 26 Southern Ocean, Themisto are so prevalent that they are considered to take on the role that Antarctic 1 27 krill play further south.
