National Collecting Scheme Scotland National Collecting Scheme Scotland is an initiative that supports public collections across Scotland to acquire and present challenging contemporary visual art. The initiative also seeks to enable curators within those organisations to extend their knowledge and understanding of contemporary visual arts, and to develop their engagement with the visual arts sector in Scotland. Scotland is home to some very fine public collections, which are of local, national and international significance. It is the aim of the NCSS that those public collections are able to reflect the range and vibrancy of contemporary art created here and abroad, that they can help build new audiences for the contemporary visual arts, as well as engage and work with artists and visual arts organisations. Some facts : • NCSS is an initiative of the Scottish Arts Council. • Currently NCSS has seven museum partners. These are Aberdeen Art Gallery, McManus Galleries, Dundee, Edinburgh City Art Centre, Gallery of Modern Art, Glasgow, Hunterian Art Gallery, Paisley Museum and Art Gallery, and the Pier Arts Centre, Orkney. • In its first phase - 2003-2006 - NCSS enabled a total of 122 acquisitions by six public collections (including craft in its first phase). In 2007-2008 a further 18 works of visual art have been acquired. The Scottish Arts Council will support further acquisitions in 2008-2009. • NCSS member were also involved in an innovative joint commissioning project – the first of its kind in the UK. They collaborated to commission Joanne Tatham & Tom O’Sullivan to create a substantial and ambitious new work of art for Scotland • Aberdeen Art Gallery hosted the Scotland & Venice exhibition December 2007- January 2008. -

National Programme 2017/2018 2 National Programme 2017/2018 3 National Programme 2017/2018 National Programme 2017/2018 1 National Programme Across Scotland Through our National Strategy 2016–2020, Across Scotland, Working to Engage and Inspire, we are endeavouring to bring our collections, expertise and programmes to people, museums and communities throughout Scotland. In 2017/18 we worked in all of Scotland’s 32 local authority areas to deliver a wide-ranging programme which included touring exhibitions and loans, community engagement projects, learning and digital programmes as well as support for collections development through the National Fund for Acquisitions, expert advice from our specialist staff and skills development through our National Training Programme. As part of our drive to engage young people in STEM learning (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths), we developed Powering Up, a national science engagement programme for schools. Funded by the ScottishPower Foundation, we delivered workshops on wind, solar and wave energy in partnership with the National Mining Museum, the Scottish Maritime Museum and New Lanark World Heritage Site. In January 2017, as part of the final phase of redevelopment of the National Museum of Scotland, we launched an ambitious national programme to support engagement with Ancient Egyptian and East Asian collections held in museums across Scotland. Funded by the National Lottery and the Esmée Fairbairn Collections Fund, the project is providing national partnership exhibitions and supporting collection reviews, skills development and new approaches to audience engagement. All of this work is contributing to our ambition to share our collections and expertise as widely as possible, ensuring that we are a truly national museum for Scotland. -

CLAIRE BARCLAY Untitled Element from ‘Shadow Spans’ by Claire Barclay 2010 Shellac, calico, fur felt 22cm x 18cm x height 24cm From the installation work ‘Shadow Spans’ at The Whitechapel Gallery, London. The installation reflected on the nature of liminal spaces on the boundaries of indoors and outdoors, for example, the porch, the entrance, windows and doors, the pavement etc. The sculptural components were in some way exploring aspects of the transitions we experience between private and public space. This hat-like form suggestive of a shift from formal to informal when removed at the point of entering a building. It is also abstracted from its familiar form and so made odd and dysfunctional. 3 CLAIRE BARCLAY Where are you based? Based in Glasgow - work in the Glasgow Sculpture Studios, Glasgow Print Studio, studio at home, work with other fabricators, engineering company, saddlers, fabric printing facilities. What is your definition / the definition you prefer of craft? Craft is present in all disciplines where hand skills evolve over time through the exploration of and fascination with particular tasks, whether practical or absurd, traditional or improvised. How does craft relate to your practice as an artist? I don’t consciously think of myself as craft- ing while I am making, as I do not have a specific goal in mind. The materials and processes I use are determined more often by the context in which I am working. I try to use each project as an opportunity to learn more skills but if the skills needed are beyond my ability, I need to work in collaboration with experts in order to realize the work. -

Recent highlights have in- cluded the multimillion pound restoration of the Kibble Palace (2003-06), and also the completion of the restoration of the Main Range (2004), the restoration of the Long Pit (2011) and Pit 1 (2013), and the open- ing of the ‘Tea Room at the Botanics’ in 2012. The Kelvin Walkway, from Garrioch Drive to Belmont Street, is also contained within the Gardens’ foot- print. This provides an opportunity to give more attention to the day-to-day maintenance of these areas and provide visitors with extended walking routes and enhanced interpretation and labelling. In 2015 Land and Environmental Services will significantly improve plant labelling in all areas of the grounds in the main Gardens area. Improvements will also progress in underutilised or overgrown areas including the Rosaceae bed and the monocot border. Throughout the history of the Gardens – which dates back to 1817 – the emphasis has been on the plant collections and their use in education and, to a lesser extent, research. -

Minutes of the meeting of THE SCOTTISH ARCHAEOLOGICAL FINDS ALLOCATION PANEL 10:45am, Friday 1 May 2015 (deferred from 26 March 2015) National Museum of Scotland, Chambers Street, Edinburgh Present: Dr Evelyn Silber (Chair), Neil Curtis, Murray Cook, Mr Richard Welander (Historic Scotland), Jennifer Youngson (MGS), George Dalgleish – standing in for Jilly Burns (NMS). Dr Mary McLeod-Rivett (contributed via Skype) In attendance: Stuart Campbell (TTU), Dr Natasha Ferguson (TTU), Andrew Brown (QLTR Solicitor). Dr Natasha Ferguson took the minutes 1. Chair Remarks The chair welcomed the panel and thanked Dr McLeod-Rivett for her contribution via Skype for certain cases involving multiple applications. The Chair reported to the panel that she has contacted Anne Dagg (Scottish Government) regarding the recruitment of a lay member to the panel. Ms Dagg was able to confirm recruitment process had been initiated with an aim to have a new member appointed by September 2015. The panel discussed minor redraft to Appendix L and M to address any potential inconsistencies between application form and criteria as suggested by JB. *AP: AB to produce revised wording regarding Recognised Collections. *AP: TTU to consider redrafting Appendix L and M RW highlighted with the panel Scottish Archaeology Strategy Consultation which is now available for comment. It was agreed that SAFAP should consider offering comments and these might be submitted via QLTR. ES requested responses from the panel and a timescale agreed. *AP: Panel to provide comments to ES by 29 May 2015 to be collated and a draft for a submission to HS prepared. The Chair highlighted her concern relating to the reduced volume of applications from local institutions and invited the panel to discuss potential causes and solutions. -

Page 1 MUSEUMS ACQUISITION AND DISPOSAL POLICY AGREED BETWEEN GLASGOW CITY COUNCIL (“THE COUNCIL”) AND CULTURE AND SPORT GLASGOW (“CSG”) AT A MEETING OF THE COUNCIL’S EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE ON 22 FEBRUARY 2008 AND AT A MEETING OF CSG’S BOARD OF DIRECTORS ON 13 MARCH 2008 This Policy relates to Museums and the Collection owned by the Council and managed on its behalf by CSG ("Glasgow Museums") This Policy will be reviewed in February 2013 (5 yearly review) ACQUISITION POLICY 1 INTRODUCTION 1.1 Background The Council has established a charitable company named Culture and Sport Glasgow (“CSG”) and a trading subsidiary named Culture and Sport Glasgow (Trading) CIC (“CSGTC”) The Council has entered into a Service Level Agreement with CSG to provide services on its behalf. These services relate to services previously provided by the Council’s Culture and Leisure Services Dept and the Outdoor Recreation Section of Land Services. These services include the running of Museums within the City of Glasgow which are owned by the Council and which are now leased to and operated by CSG under the terms of the said Agreement. The Collection which is held in the Museums (“the Collection”) remains in the ownership of the Council and contractual arrangements are in place between the Council, CSG and CSGTC whereby CSG and CSGTC are granted certain rights and undertake certain obligations in relation to the Collection. -

Country Parks) 22,971,222 0.1% p After many years of publishing monthly benchmarking reports, ASVA has been able to achieve the direct comparison of annual data from its members for 2013 and 2012 for the first time. We’d like to take the opportunity to thank Scottish Enterprise for its support which has allowed this to happen. We’d also like to Per Region thank the team at LJ Research who designed the online survey (complete with embedded algorithms) and for collating this data on our behalf. And last but not least, a big thank you to all our members who contributed to Northern Scotland 2,669,893 7.7% p this survey as without your support there would be no publication. Edinburgh Castle was the highest paid entry attraction with 1,420,027 visits. (See table , page 4, for top 20 sites.) Per Attraction Category The 0.5% increase in the table above does appear modest. -
