A New Home For the HookC.. UConn broke ground in the fall of 2018 on a new baseball, soccer and softball complex that will change the game for the Huskies. The facility is going to be ready for a March 29 debut against old Big East foe Seton Hall. The ballpark will be an immense upgrade over previous home, J.O. Christian Field and the program is also going to be part of a new performance center, down the left field line, that will feature hitting tunnels, locker rooms, athletic training, weight room, coaches offices and much more to make the facility a new home for baseball, softball, lacrosse and soccer teams.

Jim Penders has worked with the University of Connecticut baseball program in 27 of the last 29 years, being associated with the Huskies as a student-athlete, an assistant coach and now head coach. He completed his 16th season as head coach in 2019. A four-time conference Coach of the Year, Penders has overseen one of the most successful stretches in the 122-year history of UConn baseball. The Huskies have the longest tenured coaching staff in Division I baseball. Overall in his tenure, Penders holds a 567-395-5 record. On May 16, 2019, Penders surpassed his mentor, Andy Baylock, for most wins in UConn history by securing his 557th victory in a 8-5 win at Tulane. He has led the Huskies to six NCAA Tournament appearances, including a Super Regional appearance in 2011. UConn has also won a regular season or conference title three times with Penders in the dugout and hosted the 2010 Norwich Regional. Under his watch, 14 Huskies have earned All-America honors, most recently Jacob Wallace in 2019. In 16 seasons as head coach for the Huskies, Penders has had a total of 52 players either drafted or signed by clubs. During the 2015 MLB season a program-record five former Huskies played in the big leagues: Nick Ahmed (‘11) of the Diamondbacks, Matt Barnes (‘11) of the Red Sox, Scott Oberg (‘12) of the Rockies, Mike Olt (‘11) of the Cubs and George Springer (‘11) of the Astros. The feat occurred again in 2018 with Ahmed, Barnes, Oberg and Springer joined by former teammate John Andreoli (‘11) who was called up by the Seattle Mariners on May 23, 2018. Anthony Kay made his MLB Debut on Sept. 7, 2019 for the Toronto Blue Jays. Penders has led his squad to 30 or more wins in 13 of his 16 years at Connecticut. In 2019, Penders led the Huskies to its fifth at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament and earned the No. 2 seed in the Oklahoma City Regional. The Huskies won three games in the tournament, most since 2011, to reach its second-straight Regional Final. The Huskies finished with 39 wins, eclipsing the 35-win mark for the sixth time in the last 10 seasons. He was named ABCA/Diamond Northeast Coach of the Year for the third time in his career on July 25, 2019. In 2018, Penders led UConn to its fourth at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament in program history.
