The two of them then bounced over to Boston, again crashing in a house full of skaters. One of those skaters happened to be a shutterbug, so Glover began to take an active interest in photography. Non-stop. Every single day. Eventually I sold footage to lots of companies for skate videos.” Frantically filming, he found less and less time for skating, working 80-hour weeks as a production assistant on projects like the first Spider-Man movie, Dennis Leary’s Res- cue Me, Sex in the City, and The Sopranos. 16 | Erie Reader | ErieReader.com July 9, 2014 CALENDAR Shakespeare Summer Nights or the eleventh consecutive year, Gannon Uni- Fversity’s Schuster Theatre will put on Shake- speare Summer Nights, providing you a chance to enjoy The Bard and a breeze. The amphitheater at the Lake Erie Arboretum in Frontier Park will host the seasonal series, as this year’s Shakespeare outing will feature a pair of famous Shakespearian duos: Romeo and Juliet and Rosencrantz and Guildenstern. In fact, Romeo and Juliet marks the first time that a show will be repeated from a previous year, although the iconic play is a popular production for a reason. “I’m fascinated with the fact there are these two people and they ignore all of the rules in this so- ciety, because the minute they look at each other, they can’t look away,” The Rev Shawn Clerkin, di- rector of Romeo and Juliet says during a cast dinner July 13th at his home. “They just can’t. I’m really caught by that passion.” 2pm Still, The Rev. Shawn Clerkin ensures that there

WIKIMEDIA will be a twist for fans of the classic play. While two actors will reprise the titular roles, two others will be called upon to play every other character in the production. “It’s almost like they are the vehicles that drive us and our plot,” says Erika Krenn, who plays Juliet in the production. “They’re just as necessary as we are, but it’s still a story about two lovers.” While Clerkin tweaks this Shakespearean favorite, Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead, directed by Jax Kubiaki, provides another new aspect to Shakespeare Summer Nights. The Tom Stoppard play focuses on two minor characters – the aforementioned Rosencrantz and July 18th Guildenstern – and their existential dilemma as they await their fate in Shakespeare’s Ham- - let. 5pm 9pm Unlike Rosencrantz and Guldenstern, you can decide your own entertainment fate and head down to the Lake Erie Arboretum for some Shakespeare in the sun, a pair of shows to HAPPY HOUR AND LIVE MUSIC FROM suit your classical tastes. – Alex Bieler 7 p.m. Monday July 14 and Tuesday July 15 for Romeo and Juliet, 7 p.m. Monday July 21 and Tuesday July 22 for Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead // 1501 W. Hamilton Leithauser Black Hours Ribbon Music

hen was heard wailing on “The Rat” back in 2004, few were likely Wthinking that the frontman for would draw more inspiration from The Rat Pack than those angry four minutes on Bows + Arrows. That’s exactly what happened for Black Hours, Leithauser’s solo debut following the announcement earlier in 2014 that The Walkmen are in a “pretty extreme hiatus.” Leithauser trades in his booming vocal style from the past and adapts to more of a ‘50s and ‘60s croon, tackling both joyous pop tunes on the exuberant “Al- exandra” and the slow sway of “St. Mary’s County.” Every so often, the Black Hour’s drone starts to drag, with the first sour note hitting on the slow opener “5 AM.” Still, songs like the swaying, string-supported “Self Pity” show off Leithauser’s crooning capabilities. For a man so tied to The Walkman, Black Hours is an intriguing look into Leithauser’s solo potential. — Alex Bieler

Peter Matthew Bauer Liberation! Mexican Summer

ou may not recognize Peter Matthew Bauer’s face, but indie-rock fans have come to know Ythe man thanks to his duties as bassist and organist for The Walkmen. Given that band’s current hiatus, many of its members are releasing solo (you can even read our review of frontman Hamilton Leithauser’s debut on this very same page!), and Liberation! marks Bauer’s chance to step into the spotlight. The -based musician takes us on a spiritual jour- ney on his debut, starting off with the beginning of his own story on “I was Born in an Ashram,” an easygoing intro into Bauer’s Indian-influenced sound. Liberation! touches upon influences of Tom Petty-style American rock and Walkmen-esque clanging guitars, rambling onward on its journey on Fortune Tellers while settling down on the relaxed ‘60s vibe of “Shiva the Destroyer.” While Bauer admitted that he was still learning how to truly “sing” while making Liberation!, the album shows that he certainly has his own voice. — Alex Bieler

How to Dress Well What is This Heart? Weird World

or his third album under the moniker How to Dress Well, Tom Krell showcases his R&B-tinged Fpop sound in various states of undress. What is This Heart? starts off nearly naked, with the sparse opener “2 Years On (Shame Dream),” a delicate acoustic piece that keeps Krell’s delicate vocals front and center, carefully plucked guitar and minimal effects propping up his quiet story. Slowly, the album starts to add on to its sonic wardrobe, with some strained strings and hypnotic backing vocals in “See You Fall” and the reverberating final minute of “Words I Don’t Remember.” From there, Krell adds on extra layers for “Childhood Faith in Love (Everything Must Change, Ev- erything Must Stay the Same)” and “A Power,” a pair of tracks that keep building until you can’t help but get hooked. There are some clunky pieces, like “Very Best Friend,” on What is This Heart?, but Krell’s latest album has plenty of other good ensembles in its musical wardrobe. — Alex Bieler

Say Anything Hebrews

ax Bemis is back with a reinvented Say Anything – still vibrant but more mature, electronic, Mand reflective than ever before. Hebrews acts as contemplative musical of Bemis’s life the last two years. While also facing his critics who rap on his personal blemishes and inability to write up to par with his 2004 mega-success, ...Is A Real Boy, Bemis still crafts catchy melodies that swim through self-loathing and questions of god. Songs like “My Greatest Fear Is Splendid” and “Lost My Touch” stand out as enjoyable threnodies where Bemis lyrically laughs at those who critique him. But overall the album’s electronic and string dominance adds to Bemis’s poetry. Hebrews has guest vocalists on each track, like Tom Delonge of Blink-182 and Andy Hull of Man- chester Orchestra. Overall, Hebrews adds to the adventuresome discography of Say Anything. Its maturity and experimentalism are creative and well done, leaving listeners to find value in the album. — Jess Scutella
