The Study Guide is comprehensive and will be released shortly. DETAILS Suitable for: Years 10-12 Duration Approximately: 101 minutes (no interval) Warnings: Adult Themes, Graphic Violence and Intensive Technical Effects 1984 – Australian Tour Link - http://www.1984play.com.au (This link contains information on the Australian tour, interviews and up to date media publications.) INTRODUCTION April, 1984. 13:00. Comrade 6079, Winston Smith, thinks a thought, starts a diary, and falls in love. But Big Brother is watching him - and the door to Room 101 can swing open in the blink of an eye. One of theatre’s most powerful events of recent times, the stage adaptation of 1984, originally produced in the West End by Sonia Friedman Productions and Eleanor Lloyd Productions, received a nomination for Best New Play at the Olivier Awards, won a UK Theatre Award for Best Direction, and has played to huge audiences over the last three years. Even more now than the last time we visited, Orwell’s dystopian vision of a surveilled and totalitarian regime seems horribly relevant. Set in a world where an invasive government keeps a malevolently watchful eye on its citizens, this radical and richly praised staging explores surveillance, identity and why Orwell’s vision of the future is as relevant now as ever.

A lively blend of family drama, scientific revelation, intimate interviews with friends, family, and some of the world’s leading scientific minds, it combines rare archival footage, stunning visual effects, moving dramatisation and off the wall comedy. Long Synopsis Frank Fenner was one of Australia’s greatest scientists. In a career spanning over sixty years, he helped save Australia’s troops from malaria in World War II; charted the course of myxomatosis as it decimated Australia’s feral rabbit population; was one of the leading figures in the global campaign which eliminated smallpox, arguably the greatest collective medical achievement in human history; and was a pioneering environmentalist. Frank’s life was both charmed, and marked by significant tragedy. A man universally loved, with a profound insight into the workings of the natural world, he was unable to save the lives of some of those closest to him. Yet he helped save the lives of millions he never knew. How did such a modest man, from humble beginnings, grow to become such a significant global figure? Microbes to Macrobes celebrates the life of Frank Fenner. A lively blend of family drama, scientific revelation, intimate interviews with friends, family, and some of the world’s leading scientific minds, it combines rare archival footage, stunning visual effects, moving dramatisation and off the wall comedy.

Company B Presents Photograph: Alex Craig ANTIGONE The Burial at Thebes a version of Sophocles’ play by Seamus Heaney Directed by CHRIS KOHN Teacher’s Notes EDUCATION PARTNER Company B Company B sprang into being out of the unique action taken to save the Nimrod Theatre building from demolition in 1984. Rather than lose a performance space in inner city Sydney, more than 600 arts, entertainment and media professionals as well as ardent theatre lovers, formed a syndicate to buy the building. The syndicate included nearly every successful person in Australian show business. Company B is one of Australia’s most celebrated theatre companies. Under the artistic leadership of Neil Armfield, the company performs at its home at Belvoir St Theatre in Surry Hills, Sydney and from there tours to major arts centres and festivals both nationally and internationally. Company B engages Australia’s most prominent and promising playwrights, directors, actors and designers to present an annual artistic program that is razor-sharp, popular and challenging. Belvoir St Theatre’s greatly loved Upstairs and Downstairs stages have been the artistic watering holes of many of Australia’s great performing artists such as Geoffrey Rush, Cate Blanchett, Jacqueline McKenzie, Noah Taylor, Richard Roxburgh, Max Cullen, Bille Brown, David Wenham, Deborah Mailman and Catherine McClements. Sellout productions like Cloudstreet , The Judas Kiss , The Alchemist , Hamlet , The Small Poppies , Waiting for Godot , The Underpants , Gulpilil , The Sapphires and Stuff Happens have consolidated Company B’s position as one of Australia’s most innovative and acclaimed theatre companies. Company B also supports outstanding independent theatre companies through its annual B Sharp season.
