Pirates, Justice and Global Order in the Anime 'One Piece '
PIRATES, JUSTICE AND GLOBAL ORDER IN THE ANIME ‘ONE PIECE ‘ "Remove justice, and what are kingdoms but gangs of criminals on a large scale? (St. Augustine City of God, Book 4, Ch. 4). DRAFT, work in progress…do not quote without permission I. INTRODUCTION The manga/anime (Japanese cartoon) titled ONE PIECE telling the story of the pirate Monkey D. Luffy and his crew is one of the most successful Japanese cultural products of all time. The first volume of One Piece was published in 1997 and it has been published weekly ever since. It has sold over 430.000.000 million copies worldwide (70.000.000 outside Japan) and it has set already years ago the world record for "The most copies published for the same comic book series, by a single author."1 Although One Piece is the most successful Japanese manga series there are many others -like Dragon Ball or Full Metal Alchemist 2 - with fans around the World, making Japanese manga not only a successful export product, but many believe also a source of Japanese soft power (Bouissou 2006). This in the case of One Piece is especially true for East Asia, with many young readers in the region being inspired by the manga to turn their interest towards Japan (Hirai et al. 2014). Although such products of popular culture are produced mainly for entertainment purposes, we should not dismiss the reflections they make about the social and the political world, as it is recognized that they do not only depict, but also construct identities, shape security narratives and form our world, explaining why scholars increasingly turned their attention to their study (Weldes and Rowley 2015). -

The Regulation of Jewish Moneylending in Medieval England
Const Polit Econ (2010) 21:374–406 DOI 10.1007/s10602-010-9087-3 ORIGINAL PAPER The political economy of expulsion: the regulation of Jewish moneylending in medieval England Mark Koyama Published online: 17 February 2010 Ó Springer Science+Business Media, LLC 2010 Abstract This paper develops an analytic narrative examining an institution known as ‘The Exchequer of the Jewry’. The prohibition on usury resulted in most moneylending activities being concentrated within the Jewish community. The king set up the Exchequer of the Jewry in order to extract these monopoly profits. This institution lasted for almost 100 years but collapsed during the second part of the thirteenth century. This collapse resulted in the expulsion of the Anglo-Jewish population. This paper provides a rational choice account of the institutional trajectory of the Exchequer of the Jewry. This account explains why it ultimately failed to provide a suitable framework for the development of capital markets in medieval England. Keywords Taxation Á Usury Á Rent creation Á Parliament ‘If there is one thing about kings…if there is one general thing about them which we seem to learn from the history books, it is that more than not they were hard up…Through their lack of money they have been put in the most desperate straits; savage confiscations of Jews and Templars, civil wars in England and revolutions in France’ John Hicks (1969, 82) 1 Introduction This paper examines the relationship between the state and credit markets—by focusing on a particular case study: the attempt to regulate and tax Jewish M. -

This thesis argues that the television industry can no longer adapt to the changing media landscape because structural relationships and business logics forged in previous eras do not allow for meaningful innovation. -

Mamoru Hosoda and His Humanistic Animations
View metadata, citation and similar papers at core.ac.uk brought to you by CORE 79 Mamoru Hosoda and His Humanistic Animations Satoshi TSUKAMOTO 愛知大学国際コミュニケーション学部 Faculty of International Communication, Aichi University E-mial: [email protected] 概 要 本論文は、日本のアニメーションの監督である細田守の作品を考察する。 Introduction Japanese animations are popular not only domestically but also globally. The wide variety of animations ranges from family-oriented TV animations such as Sazae San (1968–the present) and Chibi Maruko-chan (1990–1992, 1995–the present) to science fiction animations, such as Appleseed (2004) and PSYCHO-PASS (2015). Because of the Internet it is easy to gain access anywhere to the contents of Japanese animations 80 文明21 No.42 with provocative themes, and this situation contributes to their popularity (Otmazgin, 2014). The first animation appearing on TV in Japan was Astro Boy, created by Osamu Tezuka in 1963. Then, an epoch-making animation that surprised audiences throughout the world, Akira, was produced by Katsuhiko Otomo in 1988. In my generation (i.e., born in the 1960s), many people grew up with animations, starting with the TV series, Space Battleship Yamato (1974–1975). Lupin the Third: The Castle of Cagliostro (1979) and Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind (1984) followed, both of which were directed by Hayao Miyazaki. Of course, I watched more animations in my school days. In fact, many people, including me, have been influenced by certain animations in their youth in one way or another.
