Luffy and his crew is one of the most successful Japanese cultural products of all time. The first volume of One Piece was published in 1997 and it has been published weekly ever since. It has sold over 430.000.000 million copies worldwide (70.000.000 outside Japan) and it has set already years ago the world record for "The most copies published for the same comic book series, by a single author."1 Although One Piece is the most successful Japanese manga series there are many others -like Dragon Ball or Full Metal Alchemist 2 - with fans around the World, making Japanese manga not only a successful export product, but many believe also a source of Japanese soft power (Bouissou 2006). This in the case of One Piece is especially true for East Asia, with many young readers in the region being inspired by the manga to turn their interest towards Japan (Hirai et al. 2014). Although such products of popular culture are produced mainly for entertainment purposes, we should not dismiss the reflections they make about the social and the political world, as it is recognized that they do not only depict, but also construct identities, shape security narratives and form our world, explaining why scholars increasingly turned their attention to their study (Weldes and Rowley 2015).

The wide variety of animations ranges from family-oriented TV animations such as Sazae San (1968–the present) and Chibi Maruko-chan (1990–1992, 1995–the present) to science fiction animations, such as Appleseed (2004) and PSYCHO-PASS (2015). Because of the Internet it is easy to gain access anywhere to the contents of Japanese animations 80 文明21 No.42 with provocative themes, and this situation contributes to their popularity (Otmazgin, 2014). The first animation appearing on TV in Japan was Astro Boy, created by Osamu Tezuka in 1963. Then, an epoch-making animation that surprised audiences throughout the world, Akira, was produced by Katsuhiko Otomo in 1988. In my generation (i.e., born in the 1960s), many people grew up with animations, starting with the TV series, Space Battleship Yamato (1974–1975). Lupin the Third: The Castle of Cagliostro (1979) and Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind (1984) followed, both of which were directed by Hayao Miyazaki. Of course, I watched more animations in my school days. In fact, many people, including me, have been influenced by certain animations in their youth in one way or another.

Garhwal University Uttarakhand Abstract One Piece is a Japanese Manga series drawn by Eiichiro Oda and published serially in Shueisha's Weekly Shonen Jump magazine since July 1997 and continuing with the same popularity. It portrays the adventures of Monkey D. Luffy, who dreams to become the Pirate King. He gained the properties of rubber after eating a Devil Fruit and is exploring the Grand Line along with his crewmates(The Straw Hat Pirates) in search of the eponymous legendary treasure 'One Piece' left by the former Pirate King Gol D. Roger. What makes this particular manga unique is Oda's representation of Japanese culture and tradition. He also uses some features similar to Ukiyo-e artworks, i.e., the woodblock art prints, which were targeted at the mass audience and also share thematic similarities. The influence of Ukiyo-e and Oda's love for Japanese art, along with its culture, folklore, and myths, is clearly seen in the ongoing Wano country arc. One Piece today has transcended the boundaries of manga, turning into a pop culture sensation in Japan. In the research paper, to apply the analytical and descriptive methods to the research, the original work, as well as the secondary sources available in the form of criticism, will be used. In my research, I will also try to apply the perspective of Cultural Studies.

RINGKASAN One Piece Merupakan Manga Dan Juga Anime Paling
RINGKASAN One Piece merupakan Manga dan juga Anime paling populer di seluruh dunia. Kesusksesan One Piece berawal dari tahun 1997 di Jepang dan masih berlanjut sampai saat ini. One Piece merupakan karya fiksi Eiichiro Oda yang bercerita tentang seorang remaja (Luffy) yang ingin mewujudkan cita-citanya untuk mengarungi lautan dan menjadi seorang raja bajak laut. Banyak hal menarik dalam cerita One Piece, salah satunya adalah penokohan, dimana penokohan dalam cerita One Piece memiliki keunikan dan sangat beragam. Tokoh yang menarik bagi peneliti adalah Tenryuubito. Tenryuubito merupakan bangsawan tingkat tinggi dunia di dalam dunia One Piece yang memiliki kekuasaan tak terbatas dan sangat luas, akan tetapi kekuasaan yang didapat Tenryuubito sangat bertolak belakang dengan logika berkuasa di dalam dunia One Piece. Kontradiksi antara kekuasaan yang dimiliki Tenryuubito dengan logika berkuasa di dalam dunia One Piece menjadi perhatian peneliti. Peneliti berusaha mencari tahu kekuasaan, otoritarianisme dan bentuk-bentuk penindasan yang direpresentasikan di dalam Anime One Piece. Penelitian ini menggunakan teori kekuasaan milik Michel Foucault. Metode yang digunakan ialah metode kualitatif deskriptif dan memakai analisis narasi struktural milik Vladimir Propp. Proses penelitian berawal dari pengumpulan data berupa scene yang menayangkan cerita Tenryuubito, kemudian dilanjutkan ke tahap analisis data dan interpretasi data. Hasil yang didapat kemudian disajikan secara deskripsi kualitatif kemudian ditarik kesimpulan. Hasil penelitian ini menunjukan bahwa One Piece tidak hanya menjadi sarana hiburan semata akan tetapi di balik jalan ceritanya yang luas terdapat unsur-unsur dunia nyata yang direpresentasikan di dalamnya seperti kekuasaan dan otoritarianisme. Kedua hal tersebut melekat pada tokoh Tenryuubito yang digambarkan sebagai salah satu penguasa di dalam dunia One Piece.
